My 95gal corner tank, I'm always switching things up but here's a general tank shot and one of my temporary delhezi enclosure, a portioned off part of the main tank. I gave my grow out tank to my girlfriend so she could breed guppies thinking I wouldn't get any more polys (you know how it is;) ) so I made this DIY separator. The main thing with my tank is I always make sure to have more hiding spots than fish, even though they hide a lot, they also love to peek.

elbeatch
05-23-2007, 10:15 PM
looking at those pics again, you can't really tell there are 10 polys in there, I can't even see one.

BichirAddict

all I can see is the pleco's bottom half and a goldfish.

I can see it to towards the right of the tank in the driftwood under the big plant.

all you have to do is throw in some food that smells potent like shrimp or worms and they all come out in a swarm of predatory coolness. The pic with the goldfish was from when I had a clown knife in there, generally now I don't get feeders, I've never had problems with polys and feeders but I've had a brackish tank go completely kaput from one oozy/lumpy feeder.

are you talking about the 3rd pic? that was how it looked like before i made the plants. actually, I'm planning on getting a driftwood with live plants anchored to it. still waiting for a big enough piece from my supplier.
as a top dweller, i'm considering a green aro and/or dats. would that be nice? :D

Fruitbat... dude... you gotta tell my what lighting system you are using in the smaller tanks to get the plants to flourish like that. I'm so jealous. I want something like that!

Keeper...

The lighting in all of those tanks is the standard fluorescent fixture that came with them. I just made sure that I picked plants that do well in lower light levels. The plants in the 10 gallon are Aponogeton boivianus, Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus) and Water Sprite (Ceratopteris sp.). The 20 long has Water Sprite, Vallisneria spiralis and Anubias nana. The 100 gallon has various species of Aponogeton, including A. ulvaceus and A. crispus.

Water Sprite is just about the ultimate aquarium plant. It will grow like a weed in low to moderate light and will completely fill your tank if you give it a chance. If you simply allow it to float it will quickly turn into a mass of plant material that young bichirs love to hang out in.

Was dug out of a swam on a friends ex-gf's parents farm a few years ago, was waterblasted and soaked for ages before spending a few years in his tank. I only got it a few weeks ago, the only thing I don't like is how short the top of it has been cut, but I guess the farmer wasn't thinking about the potential for aquarium decoration when he was chopping down the trees. :irked:

Here's the 3'x18x18" I just set up for the palmas.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/glaxton/Hanks1.jpg
Was going to be a community type tank for my GF, but she's had to take my clown loaches, palmas and one uaru! The ornate was trying to eat the CL's and was having a go at the palmas, and the two larger uaru weren't keen for a threesome so the small one was getting picked on. The penguin tetra's are slowly dissapearing, expensive feeders :(

elbeatch
06-01-2007, 3:48 AM
thanks. no top dwellers. For that tank once they all become monsters it will be pretty packed. I usually try to have places to hide up near the top and of the tank to spread things out and let them beach a bit.
I'd get a sweet gar if I had the room though.

Awesome tanks everyone! I did too much redecorating recently - all my tanks are just bare now and nothing really to look at. But if I could be a bichir I'd love to live in some of those tanks... particularly Joe's big tank, and then the one on page 4 or 5 that only has one plant with a black background... all that room to swim around and CRYSTAL CLEAR water. Keep up the good work guys!

I used aquarium Silicone to glue the rock work together. I didn't use enough on the bottom piece though. As I was situating it in the tank, one side broke loose. I wasn't about to wait another 3 days to dry so it will have to do for now.

I'll post pics of everyone in there but I do have a bunch of tetras in a quarantine tank waiting to go in there. I'm not taking any chances.

JoelR, how long have you had that L14 pleco in there? I was wondering how these will get along with the bichirs? I have a L14 too and sometimes it get pretty aggressive during feeding. BTW, I love the albino senegal. The ropefish is a bit freaky for my cup of tea. Ropefish looked exactly like a water snake.

I've actually only had him in there for about a week. I'm keeping an eye on him & have a 55 waiting to get him back, if needed. I have a green phantom who will replace him if that happens. (he's in the 55 now)

Here's my 75 that's full of bichirs (as well as others). The tank is in transition from a Geophagus tank (hence the final cichlids-Guinacara Rio Caronis), and I have finally been able to get some plants going again in the past month since I got my Geophagus iporangensis pair out that was makin babies and terrorizing the tank every month. Species in the tank are Polypterus senegalus, P. delhezi, P. palmas polli, P. palmas buettekoferi (spelling?), P. onatipinnis (grow out for a friend), Guinacara sp. Rio Caroni, Ameirus serracanthus Spotted Bullhead, Ancistrus sp., and leopard Ctenopoma. Yep, it's packed, but I'm down to one tank with water in it, and it gets lots of attention. Sorry for pic quality, it's about time for a new camera...

I'm a little ashamed of the 55 I have running now, it's a little overcrowded but only temporarily (and I am meticulous about testing water every other day and changing it at least once a week). I have 2 more 55s waiting to be set up and cycled, just shy on cash right now for the lighting. As soon as I get it set up, I will be sure to post pics.

You're kidding right??? If not,,, You put the fish in a bucket or something while you work.I'm guilty of this. I remove gravel and added new gravel with the fish in there. I regretted doing this because one of the angel couldn't handle the stress and died within a few days. Live and learn. Ok enough talk. We need more PICS to qualify this thread as a sticky. I removed my gravel with a big pipe doing a water change, then added the well-washed sand (carefully!) with the fish in the tank, no problems. Last night I syphoned all the sand out doing a 50% water change and now just have a bare bottom.

Hello,

my bichir/snakehead tank are a bit different ... totally planted.

The bichirs and snakeheads love it - i can find them in all water areas. They love to chill in the plants.
Another advantage: The plants minimize the works on the tank ... less partial water changes, better water quality.
A planted tank gives also an all-in-all more natural look ...

Here's my 330 l Tank:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff123/fup/tank05.jpg

Anyone may think i don't see my bichirs anymore ... no! They are less shy in a planted tank ...

I often can find my bichirs chilling this way ...

uwe
09-03-2008, 2:44 PM
Hello BichirRelic,

you had lived in Germany?

It's not a German phenomena - most people think it's a lot of work to manage such tanks ... but quite the contrary: You have not to do as much partial water changes, you have a better stability of the water chemistry - and even a better look!
I will recommend the plants i'm using: Echinodorus (in English: sword plant) ... grows well and is robust - - - Anubias ... it takes a while to grow, tends to rot after been done in a new water milieu (necessary after been bought ...), but is a real African water plant!
There are also those water lenses - in swome cases a plaque, but one of the best natural nitrate killers - it will give a tank this "twilight look", the ideal light situation for bichirs! But water lenses tends to proliferate ... you have to keep care about this fact.

Greetings

Uwe

Yes, I lived in Heidelberg (well Bad Schoenborn was the town) for around 3 years from 2002-2005. Thank you for all the advice, your tanks really are phenomenal, what size are they?

uwe
09-03-2008, 3:41 PM
Hello BichirRelic,

thanks for the nice words ...

My tanks ar not so big as it may seem - the smaller has 240 Liter, the bigger one 330 Liter (i don't know what this is in Gallons).
In an unplanted tank you will find the bichirs the most time on the ground. In planted tanks the "ground is everywhere" - it's a big win caused by using all three dimensions ... if the bichirs are only bottom dwellers they are living in two dimensions - except for breathing or hunting.
It's not only the tank size - it's also the use of space!

Greetings

Uwe

BichirRelic

Interesting way of putting it, and I would really like to see my bichirs use the rest of their hom, so I will definitley take that into account. As soon as I get home I will go ahead and take some snapshots of my bichiry home and post them up. The 240 liter is around 65 gallons and the 330 is close to 90, the one I have at home is a 75 gallon or 283 liters

Hi,

it's a Channa pulchra, 25cm / 10 inches long ... he's "heavy stuff" 'cause he's eating fish more than half of his own size. On this pic he is NOT together with his best friend - Polypterus ornatipinnis ... together they are "duo infernale"

Nice use of that african root wood Artax. It's not easy to use that stuff and make it look nice, but you did it well.

Malaysian drift can just be dumped in a tank and it usually looks good

My 95gal corner tank, I'm always switching things up but here's a general tank shot and one of my temporary delhezi enclosure, a portioned off part of the main tank. I gave my grow out tank to my girlfriend so she could breed guppies thinking I wouldn't get any more polys (you know how it is;) ) so I made this DIY separator. The main thing with my tank is I always make sure to have more hiding spots than fish, even though they hide a lot, they also love to peek.

nice! i love ur set up! and the tank~!

I think they do... Those are the reptile caves from petsmart... I wasn't sure if they were "aquarium safe" so I soaked em for a little over a week before adding to a tank with fish.... just in case...

bizbomb,
your lighting is so interesting. looks very pleasing to the eye.

what's your set up?

bizbomb
01-04-2009, 10:48 PM
I have 2 4' lightstrips with a total of 4x65 watts. The one on the left is 6700 and the other is 10000. I would like them both to be 6700 because I have heard they are better for growing plants. Thanks for the compliment imo planted tanks are much more pleasing to the eye and it gives my polys different layers to hang out on.

Nice tank.... Why is the water so low, though?

Cohazard

Looks like he is using eggcrate as a lid, so the low water helps keep the little ones from accidentally jumping out.

thanks cohazard, yes that's mainly the reason. i had a pleasant suprise this evening, when i went to look at the tank my palmas was crusing around the mid and top levels of the tank. very cool as i've never seen him do it before. would this have anything to do with the added sense of security coming from the addition of the driftwood?

Damn all these pics are so nice. I'm motivated to finish aquascaping so I can shoot some pics. Where do you guys find these nice looking driftwood? Did you guys buy them from the store? I live in a city so it's not like I could dig them up at the nearby river.

Pevine, your sengal looks like a waterwater. I think that would freak my nephews out if I have one. They doesn't like snakes. :D

you can find free driftwood in a nearby beach, especially where there is mangroves nearby. always look in the morning where people are still asleep. 6am or earlier. you can find driftwood in the sea shores.

or you can try goin in riversides.

I like the backround. I wan't to do one with either graffiti or some art. I always wanted a tank with a sewer pipe running through the middle (inside making different compartments/ caves for the inhabitants) and bubbles coming out the release valves.

thanks, you two. I'll try and get some more pix soon, especially of the 125 as they're all blurry and full-tank. I'm so surprised by the polli. I got it at 8" and it's 12" already...almost as large as my lower jaws and the rest of the smaller uppers aren't growing much at all. I do feed the little ones more than the larger-growing ones. I'm anxious to see how large it's going to get as the max reported size that I can find is only like 14".
