ok i have had two anableps for about 2 months now,, both very healthy , but the ones fins has changed to jet black, i think it could only be one of two things
1.mating
2. aggression
it chases the other around but i cant tell if it wants to kiss or have a punch up

I also have two that appear to be males, one of which is constantly trying to mate with the other. An interesting fact about anableps: even if you have a male and a female they may not be able to mate. They have kindof a "handedness" in that some males have right sided male organs and some have left. Same with the females. They have to have sexual organs that go to the correct side to be able to mate with eachother.
