I'd have to see a pic of the underside (swimmerettes and las 2 pairs of legs). From your pic it could be a juvie female Cherax quadricarinatus (red-claw) or a Procambarus alleni.

I'm guessing that your Pinchy is a female. I was always told that if one claw is bigger than the other it's a male and yours look about the same size.

The papilla are a little hard to distinguish in the pic but, I'm 99% sure you have a female red-claw crayfish. Here's a pic of a pair (male above/female carrying larvae)

What would happen if I were to put a blu lobster into a tank with a red clawed crab? Do you think that they would be able to live together, or just end up killing each other?

Said crabs require water of at least light brackish salinity in addition to a haul-out platform. That being said, an adult blue "lobster" of any species could easily kill and consume a red-claw, and the latter would likely pose a risk to juvenile crayfish.

So if i have a red clawed crab living in regular freshwater, then it's not a good thing? And what is a haul-out platform?

It won't live as long as it would in brackish water, and will probably succumb to "the creeping death", whereby it will suddenly become inactive and shed limbs. By haul-out platform I mean an object extending out of the water to allow it access to air.

Wow I almost bought a blue lobster from a LFS for $30 yesterday, could it be they are just crayfish??? I can catch crayfish anytime in the spring/summer but that would be wrong for them trying to sell it as a lobster. :swear:

There is no such thing as a "freshwater lobster" - all creatures marketed as such are indeed crayfish.

Veneer, are you positive about the haul-out platform? Crays have gills beneath their carapace, and in my experience do not require any such platform (experience includes keeping, breeding, trapping, and using many many many of them in a university laboratory where they (procambarus clarkii) are used for Parkinson's research). Their carapace allows them to exit the water and keep their gills wet while temporarily out of water.
Just interested...

I was writing for the specific crabs in question; you're correct about crayfish.

What else do you have in your tank with your crayfish? Most Cichlids like to eat them for snacks.... I had to remove mine when the shark ate one of them....

I don't put anything in there that i'm not afraid to have die. Extra mollies are a great addition... sort of like a biosphere... they keep breeding, and the crays keep eating!
