I enjoy looking at people's native fish and especially their native tanks so I thought it would be cool to have a thread devoted to it. Also you should post information like size of fish, age of fish, size of tank, decor, ect.

Thank you- yes it was nice. As of today I only have the big green, two darters and larger male gill. I'm moving back to Michigan when I graduate, and will have very limited tank space. The bass, seeds, crappie, bullheads and the like (plants) are spread out in a friends seasonal pond and two tanks.

Thanks wurm. Yeah I do. The piece on the left that was originally in my 95 gallon. (see below for that pic) I pulled that off a tree that had fallen into the lake I got the Sunfish in.
and the larger piece on the right of the tank I got from my grandpa's cabin at the beach.
Here is the 95 gallon with the first piece. This tank has since been torn down and turned into my 150 gallon.

After doing somelooking, and because of some good connections, I think I can get hooked up (literally) with some nice, and somewhat uncommon, native fish. I do have some concerns about two species that I can get fairly easily though.
The redfin pike is everywhere down here in south GA and are good-looking stock. My question is, is it near impossible to get them to take prepared food? I assume if you trap some real small ones it is easier to get them on prepared food than larger ones you catch on hook and line. Will redfin pike take mealworms, crickets, or earthworms?
My next question concerns the ever present yellow perch. Will these fish do well in a small group and do wild-caught fish take to prepared foods easily?
Here is a cool pic of my LMB. Quality is not the best but its cool! :headbang2

This is my longear when I first got him. I'm trying to fatten him up but I think he's really pretty (In a strait type of way). Also a shiner that I caught, didn't keep him but I should have. I just let the catfish go into my pond yesterday and replaced him with a yellow cat. I got him at 3 inches and I said once he hit 7 I would let him go. Gave you a little before and after too, sorry ther're not at the same angle The yellow cat looks awsome and is about 3 inches, same deal, Ill try and put up some pictures of her to.

hers the yellow cat
That's a flathead catfish. Not a yellow cat, which is, in most cases, the yellow bullhead. Forgive me if yellow cat is another name for flatheads, but I thought you might need to know you have a catfish that could get up to 6', opposed to a yellow bullhead at 18".:)

Thanks for the info but by "yellow cat" I did mean flathead and I do know it will get big. It's going to be released after a while, that's what I do with the cats. Thanks anyway though, good lookin' out.

Me_We I'm in AustinFishlvr Yeah I think I will stick it in a freind of mines pond but I don't think it would be a problem if I put it into the wild. It came from the wild and was only kept with other natives, also I feed it only live native food like shiners and worms.

I like the bandeds and rainbows. What's the temp? I noticed your female cherry barb, and I know those need higher temps, like 75-78F. Darters need temps below 72F for their longterm health and survival.
BTW, nice pics!
Roberto C. Wells
12-17-2007, 5:33 PM
The temp is at 75. I have collected darters from the same stream during the summer while the water was in the 80's so i think 75 should be fine, don't you?
The rainbow is a orangethroat Etheostoma spectabile it is are hard to tell Them apart If there is red in the anal fin then they are rainbows, if the anal fin is solid blue then they are orange throats. That is about the only way to tell the difference and neither picture shows the whole anal fin.

Rainbow is my default if the anal fin isn't visible. :D I'm getting some rainbows soon.
Lower temps are better for their longterm health. I didn't say they couldn't tolerate higher temps. High temps are not good for them, and will make them sick if they're kept that way too long. Besides, they're much more colorful in colder water.

You won't be able to keep a trout healthy unless you have a huge tank, high flow, and a chiller. And that would get pretty expensive... but maybe someone has done it :)

Rainbow trout are very agressive I would recomend a speicies only and very large tank if you get them young enuf they are very easy to keep. I live in wisconsin so I did not need a chiller and they did fine in about 75 degree water.

Native is used to describe fish that live in your country and have not been introduced, in this case we are referring to the US.

Does anyone keep native (cool water) marine fish? I live on the pacific coast and I have access to lots of tide pools that could yield some interesting fish. I guess the temps range from 70 or 80F down to about 45F. Ideas?

Thanks wurm. Yeah I do. The piece on the left that was originally in my 95 gallon. (see below for that pic) I pulled that off a tree that had fallen into the lake I got the Sunfish in.
and the larger piece on the right of the tank I got from my grandpa's cabin at the beach.
Here is the 95 gallon with the first piece. This tank has since been torn down and turned into my 150 gallon.

What temp do you guys keep your LMB's at? I was thinking about starting a native tank. Anyone keep them with oscars? I JUST bought a new tank so I didn't have to borrow my friends anymore, and it would be great to not have to get another one... yet
i keep my lmb with oscars and he is part of the group. he begs for cihlid pellets just like them.

Man I wish we had cool sunfish up here in Manitoba, Canada. We've got Pumpkinseeds and Bluegill. They're not bad but I'd love to get a few Orange spots or Longears again. =S
The only natives I have currently are six Tadpole Madtom in heavily planted tanks.
Here's a few older pic of some natives I've had.

Hello all,
I just started to get back into aquariums after not having one for over 10yrs. This is my first try with live plants so we will see how it goes. I am a huge fisherman and love fishing the local rivers so I decided to make a local wild fish tank..I have had it up for about a week so far and everything is working ok.
It is a 55 gallon tank, Fluval 304 canister, aquaclear hang on filter, Halmiton metal halide light with florecent bulbs. I probably need a sump from what I have read on this board.
Right now I have 2 pumkinseed, 3 crayfish, 3 chubs. I will probably add a yellow perch if I can get one.
Here are some pictures...

Yep, you are correct, that is a green sunfish. I actually have two I caught at a local pond. I always thought they were pumpkinseeds...guess I learned something today.

Check out this pip-squeak fish: a 2 inch culia inconstins: the brook stickleback. Note the lack of pelvic fins.
Note how inconstant they are. Mine didn't have pelvic spines, and it's head is really narrow like a pike or something. Sometimes they have a nice jaguar like pattern of light green on a shiney greenish dorsal surface with a redish tint to the belly. Some have 6 spines, some have 4... the ones I found have 5 spines along their back.
According to a book of mine, they don't have pelvic spines after enough natural selection, if there aren't very many predators. Find the snail in the picture below.

Eh, fathead juvenile at 1.5 inches, Silver and brown, with a dark line going along. I think they are the cutest. Not the best fathead picture around. I couldn't seem to keep these fatheads alive for long... because they were wild caught...juvenile... and possibly being terrorized by tankmates.

This our families pet LMB....the girls evan drew up a sign that hangs on the bottom of the stand that says Mr. Bass. He is about 12" long right now and is housed in a 75G aquarium, along with a few snails and a pleco.
He eats about 4-6 goldfish a day or so, or a few worms, crickets, frogs, minnows, ect.

My tank is 55 gallon, and is all native species except for 5 feeder goldfish that got too big to eat. I keep a female Eastern River Cooter, one 4.5 inch LMB, the unidentified catfish, and several small crawfish.
Any help on the catfish ID would be greatly appreciated.. I think maybe a madtom of some sort because it was like an inch and a half long when caught back in the summertime, and now he's like 5 inches.. Thanks for the awesome native posts and all your help!
