View Full Version : Jack Dempsey eggs!!! WOO
Hey i just walked over to my aquarium and saw my Bolivian Ram eating, eating off of my broken plant pot i have in my tank, eating my Jack Dempseys EGGS!so i moved them.(the bolivian rams that is)
i am so pleased that they have laid eggs! it is even more interesting because i have had them for about 1 week, they are still scared of me, they are only a little over 4" long and i thought they were both females (they still might be though right :screwy: )
lol, its funny, because i was asking sexing questions about these fish only a week ago, now i will be able to see what sex they are by if the eggs hatch!
Right now they are clearish.
And the eggs were being eaten because the JDs moved away from their plant pot after i came in the room. They are still scared of me so this gave the rams a chance to eat the eggs.
AHHHH so excited! how long do eggs take to hatch?
And i'll leave them in the tank with the JDs until they hatch or get eaten, its probably better.
Also what does it mean if the female chases away the other one (dont know if its male or female:P) from the eggs and flares her gills and bites? could that be her protecting the eggs from the male or female-feamle action? lol and yeah i know the one which laid the eggs, she also has her thingy hanging out haha.
Also when the other one gets chased off, 'it' stands its ground for a bit and curves its body, then goes off to another part of the tank and furiously shakes its body near a rock (which looks like sperm depositing i think)
So hmmmm.......

if the eggs all vanish within the next 2 days, or become white, that means they were not fertilized.
the actions that the other JD performed is a common way of just 'marking territory' and displaying independence/aggression

The one seeming to "vibrate" may actually be the male...While the female is chicking agros at him for getting too close...
Ok update, some of the eggs have become white (about 10 out of 250)
Arent cichlids supposed to be GOOD parents? (dont they guard the fry together?), that statement is leading me to think that the "male" was not involved in this spawning, making me think they arent a couple....waaaaa.
Maybe i'll have to get some more JDs, to see which two pair off although they are VERy hard to find in SA (illegal)

the more aggressive/larger of the two parents (can be either one) will, as often as not, assume full control of the eggs and chase the subdominant partner off

hatchery, where the fry were kept for a little bit, then they were moved to another pit.
The family!, the parents arent very colourful right now, they are still babies themselves lol, how old do you think they are at around 4 1/2"?

female about 10-12 months and the male about 6 months, starting from 1"
my 8" male jd has decided he doesn't like his 6" female anymore, he chases her around the tank constantly. prior to that, they did a LOT of fighting to determine who was boss in this splitup, but the male clearly maintained a brute-strength advantage, pushing the female into aquarium decor in these jawlocks
lol its funny, my female is the boss haha oh well.
And at what age do they colour up lots? or are all of the photos on the net taken with a flash? lol

when of similar size, its normal for the female to be the dominant of the pair; shes more mature.
females remain relatively dull and lackluster, males look great from roughly 5" on
