NOOOO, way different fish! This the world's largest characin reaching a reported length of 6' in the wild, and weigh over 150lbs. They are from africa, genus is Hydrocynus, sp Goliath.
Redtailed Barracuda is a South American characin that maxes out at about 12", genus is Acestrorhynchus, sp Falcatus. Awesome toothy fish, none the less, but way different.

They are rediculously expensive, but not hard to get. $200 @ 6".
Awesome eaters and great "presence". They had one in their 5'x5' tank for quite some time and it was fascinating to watch. Very aware of their surroundings.

how fast do they grow ?
what size tank do you keep the fish in ?
does the fish have tank mates ?

Thanks!
They grow slowly. I bought it a year and a half ago @ about 5". I threw it in my 900g (10' x 4' x 3') tank within 2 two months of purchase, fed daily on shrimp, smelt and occassionally on feeders, and its now 15". Patience is a must raising these things, but IMO so worth it.
Its tankmates include: 4 other ATFs (Vittatus), 2 Tarpons, 4 Tinfoil barbs, 3 Bichirs, 3 african cichlids, an Afer knife. It and the other ATFs have killed and partially eaten 6 Tinfoils, and 2 african cichlids.

Fellas, not all are rare in the hobby. All ATFs are uncommon, but not exactly rare. Here in the USA, $250 for a 4-5" Vittatus is way over priced. They are a seasonal fish, usually showing up at the end of the year until about Feb or March. Typically, Vittatus go for between $100-150 at that size, sometimes as low as $75 on a good season of importation. The one that that has been extremely hard to come by here in the USA is the Goliath. Its the one pictured w/out the stripes which also has the bigger teeth.

UM...I don't think so! A big Rhom = awesome, no doubt. A big Goliath ATF = extreme, no contest.
I'm sure you could keep more than one Goliath together, but the tank size would have to be HUGE. I would guestimate between 2000g and 3000g.
I mixed ATF's and Asian Aros, and they DO NOT like each other. There is always scales missing from each other. Had to separate. Kept the ATF, and sold the aros. I love my ATF.

But, in my experience, H. forskahlii & H. vittatus are not easy to keep. They are very nervous. So, I don't like this 2 species.
And H. goliath I never keep it, so this fish is my target. Especially after saw tigerfangs' goliath...^^

Nice ATF, woodyson! Who knows, it could be any one of the stiped variety. I currently have several of which I believe to be Vittatus. I have raised them for 2yrs from 2.5" in a 900g and now they are 14". They all seem to grow painfully slow. There is very little credible info on these challenging fish.

I have my ATF with various fish's. He leaves everyone alone. Seems very mellow. The one I have pictured is about 9-10".
I had one though however that was 15+" and I could not keep anything with him. Actually in the pix below I have loaches that was in with him and he immiediatly killed 2 of the 6 I have. Anything that he though could fit in his mouth he tried to eat. But bigger robust fish's he left alone. These loaches pictured are 5-6".

There are at least four species of tigerfish throuthout Africa:
1. Hydrocynus vittatus (previously known as Hydrocynus forskahlii) is the most widely distributed ranging from the Nile in northern Africa to the Pongola river in Natal. Growing to around 15kg (33lb) this is the species that most anglers get to tangle with on a visit to the Dark Continent;
Goliath Tigerfish
Photo courtesy of African Fisherman Magazine
2. Hydrocynus tanzaniae is only found in the eastward flowing rivers of Tanzania;
3. (Hydrocynus brevis) as name implies, this is a small species of tigerfish from Nilo-Sudan, Upper Guinea, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast; and
4. Goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) - the big daddy of all tigerfish - is found only in the Congo River, it's major tributaries and Lake Tanganyika (where very few have actually been caught). The Goliath tigerfish is known to exceed 50kg (110lb) and would have to be the most exciting freshwater sportfish in the world.
Hydrocynus vittatus: (extract from the interactive CD-Rom - "Hooked Up In Zimbabwe")
The tigerfish is one of the most sought after and probably the most spectacular of Africa's freshwater gamefish. The tigerfish's reputation has become so great that each year in the month of October, and for nearly 40 years, the Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament (KITFT) has been held at Kariba, in Zimbabwe. This is one of the biggest freshwater fishing tournaments in the world and hundreds of teams compete and thousands of competitors come from all over the world to try their skills, and their tackle, against the mighty 'water dog' (hydrocynus).
So named because of their stripped body and large, prominent canine teeth, tigerfish are great fighters capable of blistering runs and spectacular leaps. The tigerfish is also a willing taker of lures, baits and flies and this adds to its' appeal, and reputation, as one of the great freshwater sportfish of the world. In addition to its' fighting ability, few fishermen would be able to avoid being impressed and awed by the teeth of the tigerfish. The tigerfish is a member of the family Characidae to which also belongs the infamous piranha of South America. One look at the dental work of a tigerfish and you are left with no doubt about this. An interesting feature of the tigerfish's dental equipment is that spare teeth are located within the jaw and these move down and into place to replace any that are lost or broken.
The tigerfish is a very distinctive fish and cannot be mistaken for any other species. A streamlined and powerful body, reminiscent of the albacore shape of an oceanic, pelagic species (or a nuclear powered submarine!), with a large, swept back forked-tail, a mouth full of large canine teeth and prominent black stripes along the body are the most striking characteristics of this fish. The body is mostly silver along the flanks but can be light grey to dark blue on the upper surfaces. The dorsal fin is usually a medium grey while the tail and other fins feature red, orange or yellow highlights.
The business end of a tigerfish! A nice pair of tigers from the Zambezi River.

Hi all
Just orded a new ATF. Realy lucky as they had 1 left. Was listed as Goliath but i know this is unlikely. I'm hoping its vittatus ( i know most peole would want a goliath, but i'd never be able to house one). Will be with me on Wednesday. Hoping that it's not another species as there have been alot of African pikes (hepsetus) around the Uk lately. Also ordered an angelicus syno.

Good luck IoStrisciare. They look to be very small right now, difficult to varify for sure, but you'll know for sure in a few months. Hopefully they won't develop prominant striping. I hope you have the real deal.

These were imported last year. I know the guy who owns this shop and there is one left but he wont eat and one of his eyes is completely white, so the owner is not selling it. And yes $600 dollars is expensive, but I have seen smaller for more expensive here.

here are the ones I got they called goliath, but are they really?
look like the ones i got...
from an article in *********** i believe these to be the real deal.
And they look the closest to the adult specimen body shape.

hello,
New here cause i was lookin for info on the Goliath Tiger Fish. got a 125 planted discus tank, but just dont have time for them anymore  But decided I want to try my hand at this BEAST. I see most of you folks have a hard time getting this fish and would like to say if any of you live near southeast Mi, I can get this fish almost anytime. but cost a pretty penny :WHOA: $80-$125 :WHOA:

i've seen alot of people offering that they can get goliath tigerfish, and even seen them in person sold as goliath tigerfish. but all of them turn out to be vittatus or forskali. I am sure they have no intention to deceive, but mostly misinformed. if you canprovide pictures, that price is very reasonable for the goliath...but seriously, i have major doubts.

I second that statement, except for the price. If those are GATF, those prices aren't reasonable, they are down right DIRT CHEAP!!!!!! GL

you're the only one in the country that i'm aware of with this fish, and at that size!
Just so you know, my LFS (Skipton Pet center) sells one (not sure if it still there) thats 3 inches for like $60.

From what I've gathered ( read ) it's very easy to tell a goliath from the rest if you have it with you. On ATF's there are 8 teeth on the upper jaw. On a GATF there are more smaller teeth on the upper jaw behind the last teeth near where the jaws join. If I'm wrong please correct me. Thanks,
Mike

no, it's a vittatus. brevis have the shortest head compared to overall body length. The proportions for this fish look more like that of a vittatus.

Guess he's being shy. It's crazy how much I regret getting rid of him =-( I should have taken pictures when I pulled him out of the tank....OMG!.... just an amazing beast.
It was just a matter of time though before he killed more of my PBASS. He already had slaughtered an Orino, sliced up my Ocellaris... and came close to my Kelberi .. so he had to go.
I just really miss him though. Everything I had to go through to attain the fish and raise him. The trials and tribulation..... I want to cry now :(

Damn I just read this for the first time. I figured you got rid of the gatf because he couldn't hang with your pbass in terms of getting enough food. I had no idea he was jacking up the pbass. I hope mine proves to be more docile as he is gettin some size to him now.

Well as above my VATF picture it is easy to tell. GATF body got no lining & VATF mouth is consider more V shape unless it knock and broke the mouth.

I didn't realize they were rare... our LFS gets them in at least once a year. I am in Winnipeg, Canada.
They are rediculously expensive, but not hard to get. $200 @ 6".
Awesome eaters and great "presence". They had one in their 5'x5' tank for quite some time and it was fascinating to watch. Very aware of their surroundings.

how fast do they grow ?
what size tank do you keep the fish in ?
does the fish have tank mates ?
was just wondering how long it would take to get to 4ft as a 4ft+ and teeth like that i wouldnt want to scare the fish when i was doing a water change
your a wimp then these fish will jusst dart away from you. dont worry about the water changes, you wont get nipped, 4 ft long hah ytour gonna need a tank thats that wide twice the length i dont think its happenin unless you have a HUGE And i mean huge aquarium

well yours is not a true pike. its a south american pike cichlid. thats what you have your fish is not from africa. cool fish i had one they act like cichlids and have a big appetite.

I bought it. Here is a pic of the full size when i first started it.
8X30"X2...300gls
Im going to keep my eye on my cat. Once i see him getting to large, Im ganna have to do something with him. I do know that TSN's try to put everything in their mouth and are known for eating expensive feeders

He bit my Juru on his Arse, just seen my 6" (maybe 7") Ocell on his Arse (bottom on both sides, looks like 2 diff bites), My Gold Wolf has some scales missing on top of him so I think it might have been the Goliath and the last/worst/weirdest one is my Shred...excuse me.. Awesome pix West!
I did the almost worst thing a GATF owner could do:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
He is still alive (had to clear that up quick) but I bought a 9" Pike Odoe that was suppos.... on market shrimp, was like a comunity fish (NOT!) and a few more things that I gave in and said what the hell:grinno::eek:
1st day, everything was fine (Friday night), 2nd day everything was fine.
3rd day in the morn my Daughter wakes me up and Inocently says "Dad, the new fish is chasing the Goliath".... I was like what!!!! Woke up and hopped out of bed (not even thinking if my Draws were on) and ran to the front of my tank. I seen the Golith on its side and the Stupid Odoe taking free licks on my Goliath. Man, I damn near jusped in the tank to rescue my son!
In the pic you can only see just a hair of the damage on his back as my AWSOME camera phone is the best! The worst gash is not on his back but about 1/5" away from his eye there is a Deep gash (not long) that had a blood leak. Then on top of his head, he has nice slice about 1" long but you can also see the red meat.
Then the slice on his back towards the tail with the missing scales.
I left his little arse in a 12" Net on top of my tank (In water still) and went to church. Left him there till I took him back and traded him for some Geos:ROFL:. F-That.... no more aggressive fish for me (now I dont mean no more period, I mean adding in anything else).
Here is a pic of the Odoe in his Temp Net-Home:ROFL: and a bad pic of my Damaged Goliath
He is doing fine and eating. He is acting normal so no concerns right now.
All but 2 wounds have turned white and started to heal already. Just the gash close to his eye and the slice on his head are still red (thou this was the case last night, might be a dif story when I get home).
