how big do they actually get and what size tank do you think they will fit in?

i have a 125g with two bichirs and i am trying to find another fish to go along with them.
 
I think they can get around a foot but from my experience they are slow growers. How big are your bichirs? they may make a meal out of the needlefish.
FYI...needlefish are not a "true gar".
 
Yea you pretty much got it. They are slow growers. MAYBE get to 13". Your 125g will work fine for them.
 
My buddy had one that was just over 12" :) Oh and it was in his 55 and then his 125

i never got mine to take prepared food. you may have to feed him live guppies. i guess just try to gutload them and quarentine them. make them as healthy as possible. you can still try pellets or krill or whatever. just dont get your hopes up.
 
really wow i got all of mine to eat praperd foods even a pellet once
 
i have one with a Senegal bichir and they get along very well, i think its because they are both from Africa. try to buy fish that come from the same continent
