for life?
i would say 150 [5x2x2]! but a 180[6x2x2] would be better

I'd agree with that, but of course, maximum is best...

is there any way to have a jar in a 125g?

ie very little gravel, and no decor?

no.
Very to the point, but yeah I agree not very kind on the fish to live in such a small area for life. If you want a fish that can't move take a photo. look in your local paper for good buys for bigger tanks, a 125 will do for a while so save those pennies.

i agree with that. you can't skimp on certain aspects of a tank. like size etc. i personally feel that an 8x3x2High is best but i dont keep aro's although my next big project tank is that size exactly for a jar and a couple of native aussie bass. you realise that for you to truly enjoy keeping fish you gotta make it natrual. let it swim with heaps of space. so save up for a few extra weeks months because in the end it'll all be worth it for you and your jar.

I think min. for an aro seem to be as wide and 3 times aslong, when my guys full grown I would like to have him in a 8x3x2 aswell, 2.5 high maybe to give extra room so a school of silver dollars might be accepted and he's further away from bottom dwelling fish

a 6x2x2ft tank should be ok

i cant see how less gravel will make any diffrence

you can keep a jar in a 20g for life but it wont have a very long life

less gravel more room for water.

dang, i got too small of a tank for anything.

i guess i will stay with cichlids

less gravel more room for water.

and that will help the aro turn around will it :screwy:

this is why i dont understand you guys in the US the most impotant thing with large fish is tank dimentions lenght-width-depth not the amount of gals the tank has

i hear people say will a 120gal tank be ok for rays and everyone says no well what if the 120g was 5ft long x 4ft wide x 10inch deep its still a 120gal

gals mean nothing is the tank size that counts

Agreed, with these constantly cruising species, tank footprint is more important than tank volume.

he said its a 125 long

like i said that means nothing how long how wide how deep

20ft long 3inch wide who knows tank dimentions aways need to be posted when asking if a tank is big enought

if i was to say i have a 5gal what size is that tank it chould be a bucket

luckypuck

IMHO a jar would be able to live a long and "happy" life in a 4x2x2 a sa single fish with appriate filtration.

Remember, most aros don't even get the chance to die from being too cramped. Their deaths are usually caused by jumping, poor water management, power failures, etc.

Ya those are the lucyky ones. I don't own, never have owned a Jar. I did however adopt a 22" silver that spent it's entire life in a 4 foot tank. When I went to get him, it was pitiful. Ever see an aro that didn't swim, he just sat there, ofcourse the owner though he was happy. I swear it took a week in the 180gallon with my other silver for him to discover how to swim again. Fish need room, as much room that you can give them.

IMO a standard 180g(6 x 2 x 2) is the very minimum for a large jar, but eventually if the jar reaches 30" he should have a much larger tank.

:iagree: ...100%. A 180 (6x2x2) would be minimum for a large aduld jar. You figure once you're pushing 30" that two foot tank will make it hard for a big, bulky jar to turn...they are not anywhere near as flexible as a silver.

i agree too. i would go no less than a 180 for an adult jar. i think too many people are asking the minimum tank size...they should be asking what a comfortable tank size is. who or what would enjoy living in the minimum space required.

i agree jars arent no where near as flexible as silvers. saw a silver in my lfs and went to another lfs and silver was way flexible the jar wasnt.
