Not to derail, but I do see Shark Cats, Dats, Leaffish, and Butis in freshwater. I personally have never seen a Butis or leaffish in brackish. Shark cats are seen in freshwater, brackish, and full marine tanks. Dats - seen in full fresh, or brackish.

There really is no "black and white" especially since many brackish fish often transition between fresh/marine, such as many eels, etc.

B..the asian leaf fish can live in brackish water, but will due fine in fresh
C...shark cats need brackish or the will not survive from skin infections

have kept dragonfish in freshwater too....

As I mentioned, it's a BIG gray area for many species.

I suppose defining true brackish is difficult, but thats because many migrate, and even those that stay still, there are changes in water composition at different times. Some people will find some that have ventured to different areas, but will not stay there.

Yes - it's just a huge gray area - freshwater / brackish / marine.... they go back and forth, or can live in either...

So where exactly do my shark cat and dragonfish need to be? Fresh, salt, brackish.:nilly: I'm so confused.

well just look at mollies. Usually freshwater. Do just great in brackish. You'll find them in seawater. However- it is the fish that don't do well for extended periods of time in freshwater that is the problem- e.g. G. tile.
