Glad you enjoyed them. The underwater web cam was about 6inches in the water so the redtail was swimming about 8 feet below the camera. Li has a lot more video to add to this article when he has the time.

He has not even touched the 15k yet.

Lol, feeding the offcuts of a fish to the Arow. Tail.

Yes, I was feeding the tank about 10 to 15 lbs of makeral and about 10 pounds of Salmon that day.

I cut the salmon up so that the fish under 30 inches could eat easier and the aro got a tail section.

They probably will not get any bigger because they are in fresh water, I've had them several years and at times have had them in full marine, brackish and fresh. They are very smart and dash among the predators and avoid getting munched.

Until a month ago they had a scat in with them. Same age and a bit smaller. but he got eaten after being in this tank for a few years.

They don't look small when friends are in the tank with them. Some times they are 15 to 20 feet away in the videos and that is why they look so small.

Thats one of my Wallego leeri.

Here are some pics taken a few months ago.

Sorry the tank glass was so dirty but I had just fed the tank a lot mackeral to lure the Wallegos up from the 9 foot deep level they normally hunt in to take these pictures. Notice the Pangasius sanitswongi in the background of the 3rd pic. He is a measured 22" long and had to be caught out of the tank this summer and placed in my outdoor ponds due to aggression.

Yes the cichlids and barbs reproduce in the aqaurium.

There are a lot of big cats in that aquarium. Over 10 of them are over 36 inches long.

He ate a school of 12" oscars overnight about the first month the tank was set up.

He ambushes them floating arounf like the goodyear blimp. But when he opens his mouth they just go right in. Also when he wants to attack he can cover 15 feet very fast.

The funny scene is watching my 4" Abramite nip his tail and then dash out of the way when he turns around to snap him up.

What's that black fish next to the redtail in the "other fish" video
One that doesn't move to much(from 23~34 seconds.). And the 2nd one with the long tail.(from 35seconds)

The first fish is a Pseudodoras niger also called the
Dolphin Catfish

I got this description on the net:

I have 5 in the tank the smallest is probably around 36"
Some sources say 30" is the max but I have never had any that did not grow bigger.

AKA: Black Doradid or Niger Catfish
Pseudodoras niger (Valenciennes, 1817)

Temperment Sociability Min. Tank Availability Area
Peaceful Pairs 150 gallons Common Bottom

Pseudodoras niger is what you would call a gentle giant. The body and fins are a uniform black to slate grey, fading to a lighter grey on the belly. There is also a single row of narrow, lateral plates that run along the body from behind the head to the caudal fin.

This catfish shows no aggression towards its tankmates. Small specimens are shy and spend the day hiding away, only coming out to eat at night. As they mature however, they start to cruise around the aquarium more boldy. Even though they are good scavengers and sift through the substrate looking for food, they usually won't bother uprooting plants.

P. niger prefers a temperature range of 70-76 degrees F. Being fairly active swimmers, they require plenty of oxygren in the water, so a powerhead or some sort of heavy water current is required. It will tolerate a large pH range, but, you should avoid extremes of the water hardness level.

In the roof and floor of the fish's mouth are several fleshy appendages, covered in taste receptors. These act as a tongue when the fish is sifting around looking for food. In the wild, P. niger eats plant material, fruits, and insect larvae. In the aquarium they can learn to eat pellets.

The 2nd catfish is a Wallago Leeri.

Here is a description from the web

Wallago leerii (Bleeker, 1851)

e are continuing the predator theme this month ( Nov.2004) with another beastie, the "Helicopter catfish" from the upland rivers in Thailand down to Indonesia. This species of Wallago is not exported as much as its cousin Wallago attu but a few aquatic publications have W. leeri captioned as W.attu and I will point out the differences later in these two closely related species.

First of all we at ScotCat must stress that this is not really a catfish to keep in your aquarium and as they are creeping up more and more on importers lists you must keep in mind that it can grow to a mostly unmanageable 6ft in length and would need a fish only diet the older it gets, as you can tell by the girth of its mouth. It strikes me as strange that it is now offered to unsuspecting aquarists although these specimens were in very good condition and were around 18inchs in length when photographed in the aquatic stores tanks.

There are at present 4 species of Wallago listed, our factsheet of the month W. leeri, W. attu, W.maculatus ( which could turn out to be a synonym of W. leerii) and a new species which was described this year by Heok Hee Ng from mainland Southeast Asia, W. micropogon.

To distinguish W. leerii from the very similar W. attu you have to look at the dorsal fin first. W. attu has a pointed extension while W. leerii does not and is more rounded at the tip. The mouth gape of W.attu ( see above) reaches beyond the insertion of the eye and W. leerii has the mouth only reaching to the beginning of the eye. W. attu has a longer anal fin than W. leerii with 77- 96 with the latter possessing between 64-75 fin rays.

Characteristics
Body elongated, compressed. Abdomen rounded. Head large, depressed. Snout spatulate, somewhat protruded. Teeth villiform in bands on jaws and in patches on palate. Two pairs of barbels, one pair each of maxillary and mandibular. Mouth reaching to anterior margin of eye. Mandibular barbels shorter than pelvic fin. 12-16 gill rakers on 1st arch. 64-75 anal fin rays.

Colour
Light golden brown on upper body with broad black band reaching to caudal peduncle from posterior of insertion of dorsal fin. Silver spangle effects adorning this band. Older larger adults lose this colouration and tend to be all over silver.

Compatibility
This catfish is not meant to be in an aquarium as it will view any other fish as lunch. Only suited to very experienced aquarists who can give this catfish an indoor heated pond and plenty of room.

Breeding
Not possible in an aquarium setting as in their local habitats they leave the deeper water and spawn in the shallows.

Feeding
As juveniles they will eat pellet and tablet foods and meaty foods such as earthworms and beef heart. As adults they will only except a living fish diet.

Etymology
Wallago - Bleeker, in 1851 took the Indian fish name 'Wallagoo', gave it generic rank, and used it in connection with a new species.

WOW! Amazing videos! I love the wallago leerii, how big is it? The water isnt very clear (but clearer than some other members tanks, lol) I would also like to point out, your my hero, because your the only person on mfk that doesnt overstock there tank (besides me a a few others)

Thank you for the kind words.

Although I try not to overstock in a few tanks it has become a problem as the fish grow. The 15K really needs to be thinned out but nobody wants 20 to 30 18" to 24 " brycons or doriads.

If neo ever gets to putting the action videos from the 15k up on this article you will see what I mean.

Absoulutely amazing!!! Earlier i was ticked off because my computer woudn't veiw the videos, but I'm on my friends's computer, and i can see them:DAwesome! Those gigas are eye boggling.

2 questions-

1. Your gigas can move pretty quick. At my public aquarium they had one around six feet and it was moving hardle two or so milesper hour. Any ideas as to why? Do think it's due to their different sizes or related to feeding time?

2. I saw some monoes and scants in those vids, and aren't those brakish? Do you add salt to your tank?

Thanks,
Art

Hey, great to hear from you.

My guys are young and yes they are very fast swimming. They are very scared of my 2 Wallago leerii. So when they eat they come a little slow till they know what's on the menu. Then snap it up and immediatelty swim very fast to get out of the area.

The Wallago's will actually attack them to get at the food (That means right through their head or stomach) if they stick around.

My Pimas can sit around at times sort of just resting.

I know that some moderators on other sites suggest that the are ambush predators and that may be, but my observations of my fish have never actually shown that they catch any fish that way.

My Monos and Scats are in fresh water only. I started them in full marine and gradually got them to full fresh just by monthly water changes. I had them in a 225 with an Orbiticulate batfish that I had for 10 years in the tank. When he died, I stopped adding salt and slowly changed the tank to brackish and then fresh. When it was straight fresh I added them to the big tank.

I like your selection of fish you keep and actually have everyone of those species myself. All of which are kept in either my 52k or 15k.

Thanks for your answer. I never realized walago were so aggressive, i thought they were a more passive predator seeking out prey at the bottom. I will soon be acquiring a panax batfish too, along with a 72 gallon bowfront aquarium a frined of mine is giving up. It's interesting your keeping monoes in complete fresh, i've never seen anyone do that before. BTW, Thanks for the complements on the fish i keep. I love SA fish, which is why i started a site about them:D At one point i had many more, but they gradualy all died for old age or what not i didn't get many new ones...until know. I will soon be building a 500 gallon(i've already started a thread about it in the DIY section...) tank and hopefully a larger one around 2k(but not for a couple years). Maybe larger, but my budget is not as high as i want it to be, lol. Oh, my brother lives not to far away from niagra falls, and i realized you said that you live only 90 minutes away from there. I'd love to check out your tank(you said MFK members are welcome), but i'd love to a lot of things that i never manage to do.

Sorry for the long post too.

Actually there are 3 Redtails and they are all 3 feet and a bit more. 2 of which I got at under 2" in 2005. I have never had a Wels I believe the fish you are looking at is one of my Wallego leeri

You are so right about the stabbing. Don't forget though that there are 5 Pseudodoras niger (32" to 37") in the tank and their shutes can also give you a nasty cut/wound..

Oliver Lucanus got stabbed by other Panagasius sanitswongi of mine when moving them from the 15K to the 52K a few years ago. He was even wearing his Amazon protective gear at the time protecting his legs. He said he still felt pain 30 days later.

I'll try and find pics

I guess everybody are in awe of your wallago leeirii as am I. Truly amazing that a fish can bring such fear to fish as big as your pimas. Do you have videos of the wallagos feeding? Funny watching on YouTube, fish farmers jumping into their pima ponds treating them like overgrown dogs. I wonder if they would even dare do the same for wallagos. There are stories of them being maneaters I read. Thanks once again for sharing your aquariums with us without being condescending towards our puny aquariums. From reading your posts, it sounds like you very much want to educate us as well as learn for yourself. Looking forward to seeing the 15K gallon monster.

How the heck do you catch a big fish in a tank like that??

I take 35,000 to 40,000 gallons out and family & friends go in and catch them with large nets. The divide at the 4 feet level helps because they only have to go in on one side or the other.

It's really hard to seperate the costs of the tanks. Beside the 15k and 52k I also have more than 100 others up and running. 60 of the smaller ones range from over 100 gallons to 800. So you can see how hard it is to say how much a particular one costs to run.
