I keep hearing that many people use your basic black garbage bags as background for the tank. I would like to give that a try… but is there anything special I have to do? Or how would I even go about this?

Don't use full ones.

I don't like trash bags but I have used the black plastic Made for a drop cloth or land scaping, I bought a roll of it at Lowes. All I did is cleaned the aquarium real well and taped it on just like an aquarium back ground. I just did this on a 180 I set up.

I prefer to paint them but I could not do any painting in the area where I was setting this aquarium up. The plastic looks pretty good and is pretty durable.

LOL..... That sounds like a great idea....I heard of one of the MFK members using a piece of cardboard, spraying it with a "foam" (DAP makes a spray foam insulation) and then carving it, and painting it....That sounds really cool. I just may try that myself!

I wonder if you could use spray adhesive and put crumpled trash bags on the back...i may try that and see!

I would be VERY careful with the spray adhesive....If you do, make sure the spray does not get into the tank.....it will kill the whole tank off....

What if the tank was empty:P

Why don't you just paint it with some opaque black paint. It will look smoother than any plastic. Cheap too. And if you ever want to remove it, all it takes is a straight razor blade (if it is glass) to scrape it off. Sounds harder than it really is.

I would still put a cover over the tank opening....Just so it does not get on the glass inside the tank....Its messy to clean up....
