This is Mr. Cash. He is an 8 year old African Gray parrot.... he knows about two thousand words.. mostly he asks for "cookies" or asks to "come out" and he says "shut-up" and "be quiet" to the other parrots when they get noisy.. He always says goodnight and he laughs over anything.. a real high pitched belly laughter.. he is my delight and i cannot believe the big brain lodged in that tiny little head.. here he is playing get the napkin off the counter..he throws the napkin off the edge and then looks down onto the floor to see where it went.. he flips up into the air when the napking rolled into a ball comes at him.. i have to get him a little basket ball.. and i have to learn to do video because he is just that entertaining........here he is MR. Cash{i had to run to the bank and get my money} haha.. i will post my other two types of parrots .. but in the meantime let me see yours..............

I've had Macaws, several of them...none anymore.

People tend to say Grey 's are smarter, but they're not , imo. Of course there are very smart grey's ( perhaps even the smartest known parrot, Alex, a grey ), but in general terms I would say that the amazon Ocrocephala species ( the yellow heads, with their subspecies yellow foreheads, yellow napes, yellow heads, etc ) are the smartest parrots.

Actually among parrots there are 3 groups that are really intelligent.

The African Greys - the thinkers

The Amazons - the chatters

The Large Macaws - the Escape Artists

The Greys generally are consider to be smarter - because they speak more clearly than Amazons,Macaws or Cockatoos. They also seem to have a better ability to learn the names, numbers & colors better than other types of Parrots. They are actually almost a smart as a small pre-school child, in learning ability.

Amazons are great at picking up sounds - singing, & talking. But tend to score worse than Grey's on the ability to learn names, colors or numbers. Still I would not call them smarter than Greys. If any thing I would say the Greys tend to barely edge the amazons out in raw intelligence

Generally speaking macaws often take a back seat to Greys & Amazons in the talking department. But large macaws have an almost uncanny ability to break out of cages - even so called "Macaw proof" cages. They can even learn to open cages by finding the weakest points in the cage - then manipulating the bars until they break, or in some cases they can learn how to open combination locks - no joke - I've actually seen a Blue & Gold do it.

This reason, my blue and gold escaped never to be seen again, and the NOISE, made me have to get rid of the Green Winged Chloropteras Macaws.

In terms of escape, I find that Cockatoos are still worse than Macaws.

As to be being "smart "and parrots, I have heard of Yellow Napes singing Opera, something I find a Grey will never be able to.

But again, if it is "talking ability" we want, nothing beats the Minnah.

of course. They repeat -mimic- what they hear and in the way( as in sound ) they hear....

Red Devil

:D Lizz, all birds talk out of mimic.

yes but my gray actually says things in the appropriate time frame.. like when it gets dark he starts saying "goodnight".. or if he wants to come out he will ask you when he knows it is his usual time to come out.. so he mimics but understands the meanings of what he is saying..he does his poopies in the garbage can when i ask him to go:D he will puff up and wiggle .. and go:D and then he says "good boy" :D

Miguel
06-17-2007, 1:03 PM
and that is very true. They start by mimiquing and then they start associating which sounds suit to what circumstance....

if you stop that "good boy " scene, and start saying "orbital interference" everytime he goes to the poo place, in no time he'll start, upon poeeing, to fluff and wiggle and go "orbital interference" , "orbital interference" on you....

want to try?

Lizz, all birds talk out of mimic.

I think it's more accurate to say Parrots learn to talk thru mimicing. But then so do people.

In humans - we as toddlers, first learn how to speak - by simply lessoning to how our parents say words, and then copy them - it's basically the same thing with teaching young parrots to talk.

But children grow up they learn to how words are formed, then they actually start to improvise - forming they own words or rearrange words to make different phrases.

And At least one group of parrots can actually do the same - the African Greys.

Case in point - We raised a Congo Grey (about 11 years ago)from a chick. He started talking at just under 6 months old(we talked to him daily). We also allowed him to lesson to TV programs. And one of the TV programs he lessoned to was Star Trek. By the time he was just over a year old he was starting to make up it's own phrases. When he want to be let out of his cage - He would say "Beam Me Out - Mommy" instead of the normal "Beam Me Up - Scotty" often used in Star Trek.

The only difference is that the baby already know how say the sound, they just don't know how to coordinate them into words that we can understand. If we leave a baby alone long enough, it will develop its own language. A Parrot cannot do this -- it can only mimic the language it hears.

Regardless, mimickry in birds is probably why we treat them better -- they "act" more human than "beasts." That... I find sad. We treat animals that impersonate humans better than some of the other exotic pets.

i have had 4 different parrots.. have the three types now.. and my gray is superior to all of them.. he is totally like having another person in the house.. young child.. he is the most fun, the most behaved, the most charming...what happened to your guy.. or do you still have him?

I guess I got started from my dad. He used to train hunting dogs so we had some pigeons and ducks (don't worry, none were killed in the training, Labradors have soft mouths and are not suppose to squeeze or hurt the birds). Well I decided that I wanted to breed them and release some on our farm (the Mallards and Phesants). I bought a couple of Tumblers and Roller pigeons and I bred them and sold them. I was shocked at how much people would pay for a pair. But about 2 years ago, I got married and moved away from my parents so I to sell/give away a lot of my pets.:( So I'm kind of starting over again.:D

very nice... i had a couple of mallards for my pond in Florida when i lived there and then when i moved to NY took them with me.. but i lost them to coyote or something at night.. they are all awesome birds.. I raised chickens as a kid.. snuck them up to my room because i knew my parents would get rid of them.. even chickens are incredibly smart. ..if you train them. :grinno:

very nice... i had a couple of mallards for my pond in Florida when i lived there and then when i moved to NY took them with me.. but i lost them to coyote or something at night.. they are all awesome birds.. I raised chickens as a kid.. snuck them up to my room because i knew my parents would get rid of them.. even chickens are incredibly smart. ..if you train them. :grinno:

Liz, one of the best pets I ever had was a duck. About 7 years ago my female mallard's eggs hatched out about 14 babies. Well when I checked out the nest to remove the broken eggs, one egg was still trying to hatch. I took it inside because ants were crawling all over it and it hatched a very small duckling. Well the duckling looked at me and thought I was momma. I tried to introduce her back with her family but should wouldn't go. Needless to say, I raised the duck myself all summer. The duck was soooo cool, she followed me around and came when I called her name (Louie was her name until she grew up and I realised she was a girl, then it was Lou-anne). She would chase my dogs and the other ducks if they got too close. She would fall a sleep in my lap when I watched T.V. I even had her outside on our patio when we had people over for B.B.Q's. They all though it was so funny how this duck liked to hang out with people. But poor Lou-anne didn't know about all the things out there that eat ducks. And one day I came home and found out that she got killed by a Red-tailed hawk:cry: . It was a sad day but I will never forget her: The duck that though she was a human.:)

i raised some geese once when we had our larger farm.. i had a few geese hatch where they could not stand up.. their legs would just do a split.. i thought we would have to put them down.. but i took sandpaper and taped it to the bottom of their feet.. to give them a grip.. and with in a few days their muscles in their legs were strong enough so they stood up straight and they were normal...

To me it is amazing how attached we can get to animals and how the animals who seem the least likely to make good pets become good pets.. you brought a tear to my eyes..because that was a very tender story..

Yea there are a few tricks you can do to help them out. We hatch alot of quail and we often get them where their toes are screwed up and what not and we just take tape and straighten the toes out and tape them in place. Usually it works within a few days.

Hey chad55, do you raise Bobwhites for release? I wanted to raise them because they are native to where I live, yet I have never seen one. I even built a Bobwhite recall pen. I hear their mortalilty rank is very high for released birds. Pen raised ones I guess have a very hard time adapting back to the wild.

Lou-anne was an awesome pet. I know some people think "why, it was just a stupid duck", but she was more then that. She had a lot of personality and everyone I showed her to was amazed at her. When she grew up, she would still come when I called her and fly up to our house and land on our patio looking to be fed and scratched on the chest. She can never be replaced. Thats what some pets mean to us.

Oh yeah, for the guys: the laidies love to hear about you saving and raising a poor, cute, fuzzy little animal. Use it to your advantage, lol!

We have and they have actually done very well. We here them and see them all the time in the place that we released them and actually captured a group of 20 or so there. We never used to see them there before but they come around now. BUT what we did was let them go wild as they pleased. We opened up the pen and just let them go and we kept food and water in the cage. They stuck around for a while then eventually they took to their own and about 2 months later or so we wouldn't see them around the pen anymore.

I tried what you did with Chukar Partridges before. They left but weren't very smart about staying hidden during the day. They kind of stick out when they are in the open. We used to find them pecking around our barn during the day like chickens.

I had one that I kept in my pigeon coop for 8 years. His name was "Chuck" the chukar. He was a look out bird for my pigeons. When I let them out to fly he would stay in the cage and make a grunting clucks when he saw a hawk. The pigeons seemed to pick up on this and would come back into the cage. He wasn't mean but the pigeons gave him respect. He was like the "God Father". Now I have had other Chuckars that were very mean. I had to keep them in pairs seperate from other birds because they would fight.

Red Devil
07-25-2007, 8:59 AM
There are many reasons that people get rid of african grays.. although i would say out of all the parrots they are probably the least that are available for adoption.. but they do live a long time and sometimes by the time you can afford one of these guys your older and they out live you.. {I have a will that i say {I leave Cash to my son } haha .. plus they are very one person oriented.. so if someone else takes them over it takes time and patience, which alot of people do not have..

Yeah, I took some nasty bites from Bongo when I first got him because he didn't associate me as his "buddy". He bonded with my mother VERY quickly so he is becoming her bird more than mine. I'm fine with that because I just want to make sure he is happy.

Davo, to answer your question, Bongo was abused by his previous owner. To this day he is terrified of any sort of long cylindrical objects because his owner used to hit his cage and jab him with a broom. :irked: At first I didn't know that until I bought some new toys for him and he started growling and flipping out when I put a long chew stick near his cage.

He is much better now that he is in a home where people love him. I ended up getting him when I worked at the petstore with a friend of his owner. She told me what was happening and she didn't know what to do about it. He called the store and I talked to him and at first he basically told me to go f*** myself and he could do what ever he wanted.

I happened to be in on my day off when he was there visiting his friend so I talked to him face to face. It's amazing how much his attitude changed when he realized he was telling a 6'4" defensive lineman to go F*** himself. Long story short, we came to an agreement that I get Bongo in return for me not taking his life. :D

Long story short, we came to an agreement that I get Bongo in return for me not taking his life. :D

great story... and i am happy for BONGO!!!

and that is very true.

HAHAHA:ROFL:

LOL Obviously you've never met him. Lovebirds are little parrots with huge parrot attitudes. He thinks he runs the house. He's soft and gentle when he sleeps though. :D

I feel your pain, I used to have two. They were obnoxious little twirps. We had to sell them though, they didn't like the new house we moved in to.

wow Peta protested that?? gee they really don't have anything better to do ..do they?

Well thing is parrots have overpopulation issues and there's many sitting in rescues that need homes, while people are breeding more ( especially for large chain pet-stores). I talked with someone who ran a parrot sanctuary and it was an eye opener. In light of that, it's a good thing pet-shops carry less of them.

All of your parrots that I've seen so far look beautiful to me.
Love that outdoors aviary.
I had pictures of my birds..None digital. Had chickens once upon a time. Wild animals and neighbors dogs killed them.

as soon as you explained this i knew what you were saying ..yes there are too many being bred...and then not kept.. they end up going from family to family and then to shelter.. by then they are so unsocial and mixed up they need to be rehabilitated..they pull all their feathers out etc very sad.. i had chickens and roosters too... they are very intelligent birds..,many don't know that ..i liked them alot!

Still dont have my camera back yet, and the Macaw (Little Man) has gone to bed...

I will take pictures tommorow for sure though. He is a really greay bird, very funny too. Whenever I eat something, he comes running over begging for a piece just like the dogs do, and by running, he actually "hops" from his cage to the couch, then runs across the couch and onto the computer desk, and says "Hi!"

I almost adopted 5 cockatoos! Seen so many its not even funny.

Local shop near me had a Hybrid Macaw, ScarletXB&G most beautiful macaw I've ever seen, aside from my own :D

Apprently its owner, and older woman died and the bird was passed about the family. It really only likes who it decides to like. Took a long time for them to get him a home, but the home he has is great. From what the store owner told me (he raised my bird from an egg) the Hybrid Macaw, "Shaner" picked the people he lives with and will not let anyone else touch him, or be near his cage but them.

Also, I'm getting a free hair combing from Little Man, he's getting the back for me.

I forgot to specify wich type of Macaw he is, He's a Yellow Collared Mini. About 15'' from head to tail. Not a small bird, but not a giant like his cousins(B&G, Scarlet, etc)

He's learnging to talk more everyday, He says "Hi" "Hello" "Hey" "Hmmm" "Huh?" makes kissy noises, whistles a little, and likes to make clicky noises. He feeds the dogs too! Drops little pieces of carrots and whatnot for them

I was amazed when I found him. I never thought I'd be able to just walk into a local store and find a Yellow Collared Macaw. I had planned to pruchase a Timneh African Grey, and wasnt getting very good response from the breeder. So I decided to go buy some fish, Haha and right when I opened the door to my LFS Little Man was sitting on a big manzanita branch. I bought him the next day. He's very well behaved, and is learning to talk more and more each day. He's my first bird to ever own, and he's awesome.

oh he definitly made me smile.. i have three beautiful parrots but cash is the absolutely special one..he does not require toys and does not need that everyminute kind of attention.. never yells or bothers anyone..just sits in his cage and laughs or talks or calls us ..we have conversations back and forth all day like he is a person, the one thing about them is they need to be introduced into different things because they can be a bit nervous of the unknown...but other then that they are just happy go lucky and content with just being themselves.. mine justs wants peace and quiet and when the other ones start yelling he thinks nothing of telling to BE QUIET and shut up... just a ham... looking forward to more pics and i will get cash pics soon.

Hello Mr. G Cat my name is Louie and I'm a Green Cheek Conure. Mr. Matthews is my daddy, I guess he's your daddy too now that you have found your place in our home. Mr. Matthews has known me since before I was weened from baby food. He came and played with me at the bird store every weekend. We would look at all the bird toys and got to be good freinds even before I got to go home with him. I talk alot now and I'm also friends with Bain the cat (the furry kind) and Honey the golden retriever who just had 10 puppys over the weekend. I think I drive the Matthews family crazy by constantly asking them "Whacha doin" but they always answer me and I think it's fun. I get at least 2hrs a day free time outta my cage and it's lots of fun as long as I'm a good boy and don't get in trouble.

Thank you Liz. :D I can't wait to bring the baby home. It's going to be a long 2 months waiting for him to be weaned.

We have 2 cockatiels and they are so funny. Every morning when I get ready to leave for work, the one always says "good morning". Sorry to hear about yours.:( He lived a long life.

Nice birds guys (and girls)! I used to have a pidgeon very long ago. I built it a cage, and it lived with my rabbit. (Pretty crazy, huh?)

Pidgeons are fun to keep, yes. But ofcourse, you've got to release them.

i will be releasing my snapper late spring after i do all the steps nessasary for his survival in the wild//finally learned what i needed to do...he won't be going too far...just the swamp across the street but it is going to be emotionally hard for me... but he needs to really live.

I have to agree with Miguel on his bird opinions. I researched parrots for 8 years before getting one. I wanted a grey. Changed my mind. I have 3 blue front amazons (all female) they range from saying a few words to very wordy. I have 2 yellow nape amazons (male) and I will put them against any bird for talking. Accents, clarity, tone of voice, sense of sentences (I am a pretty bird, are you going to work today? Are you coming over? I like pie, but not ice cream. It's friday, is it my birthday?) Both are also very feisty. One also has quite a vocabulary - in lebanese. I also have a mollucan cockatoo. He likes to spend his time breaking his cage apart. I have yet to find one he can't take apart. I've gotten good at welding.... I also have 7 padlocks on his cage. He makes intricate knots out of his string toys after they are shredded. He screams for 10 minutes every day at dusk and not a sound any other time. I have 2 female eclectus. They can out-talk the amazons hands (wings?) down. They also do sounds. They also imitate the other birds' voices so I am often not sure which bird is talking. I just lost an 18 year old green cheek conure. He talked - but not clearly. All the parrots are about 10-12 except the cockatoo who is 30. Then I have 15 cockatiels (several in their 20's) and 35 parakeets in a big cage (big) and then there are the canaries who sing all day and the finches who peep so loud you can't hear on the phone.
I have had birds for over 30 years. And having admitted that - I feel really old. Til I think about how I have raised fish for 40.....
I have to restart my computer then I can post pics.
