I thought sturgeons were always freshwater? But anyways, they were selling some freshwater sturgeons at Petsbarn for I think like $10.. and the guy, who has kept calvus mind you, said they get to be 50 inches long.. and is this usual for a sturgeon?

Not really depending on the species did he mention they need very cold water?

There are several sturgeon species ranging in size from 36 inches as adults to over 18 feet as adults, many travel into brackish or salt water but many also just stay in fresh. They are cool to cold water species. The smaller ones tend to be slow feeders except at night.

If these are sterlets, they'll hit only 24". Nice size for an aquarium. Strong water flow, good aeration, and a chiller are "must haves" for these guys.
Here's an old pic of one of my albino sterlets.

That's what it looked like except it was a bluish on top and white on the bottom, same shaped nose.

In England there is a guy who sells sterlets, siberians, and stellates @ 18"-24" for under $30 each.

I think there are several in the US alone, off hand I can think of White, Green, Pallid, Lake, shortnose, Atlantic, Gulf, and Shovelnose. These range in adult size from 3 1/2' for the Shortnose to over 18' for the White.

Hiya LBC, welcome to MFK!
I have never seen one much bigger than about 8', they allow you to keep 5 a year but anything below 42" long or above 60" long has to be released. I have caught them from as small as just over 13" to about 6'8".

the 18ft you speak of is the beluga right? That would be a hard fish to keep. It is also considered the largest freshwater fish in the world too right?

I'm talking about the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) from the US pacific northwest, it reaches 610cm. The Huso daricus from the Amur river gets to 560cm. and the Beluga (Huso huso) gets to 500cm but gets twice as heavy as the others. They are all anadromous species so they don't really count as freshwater. the pic of the one being held by 2 guys is the white sturgeon and the other is a small beluga.
