about 5 yrs ago, the local Sport Challet sold water dawgs for like 79 cents a piece. :WHOA: we bought about a dozen of them for fishing and only used like 4. we also had goldfish for bait. so when we got home we put them in a huge cooler with an air bubbler and an old mellenium 2000 external power filter. after about three days the dawgs ate all the goldfish my dad was pissed :ROFL: . the following weekend we used the rest for bait.

now i want one for my tank! :cry:

i cant find them at any of the petshops or baitshops. :swear: any ideas where to get them?

They aren't fish right? Aren't they like a slamander/lizard thingy....?
 
Mud puppies, a gilled salamander, I will watch for them.
 
axototls are fully aquatic salamanders.. commonly known as mud puppies or water dogs.. ive been looking for them too.. thanks for the site..
 
Mud puppies, although the names are commonly crossed, are different from water dogs. However, most distributers probably use the names interchangingly.

Water dogs will eventually mature into tiger salamanders, which will leave the water and love a tank of mud, a large shallow water bowl, and a log or two. My first nature center had two of them, and they fed great on mealworms from long tongs. They also take crickets. I think they are one of the best salamanders because they get large and have lungs, so you can touch them somewhat.


Mud puppies will be aquatic their whole lives. I used to see them occasionally in stores, but I think they are on Ohio's list of permit-requiring amphibians now :(. One of my nature centers has one, but we caught that in a large river....
 
Tiger salamanders=axototls, and are smaller than mud puppies, some never morph into land form and most spend years in gilled form. Both will munch fish up to twice the size of their heads.

Damn...you beat me to it. I was gonna say that.

I think the use of them as bait is illegal....it is in NY anyway. This is because of the decline of certain species in various states....such as the tiger salamander in NY.
