if they are from peru, monster fish usually means "Batrachoid sp." they are like the freshwater version of the stone fish,

I would say 6-8 inches max,, I used to have 4 of them in one tank at one point. they like sandy bottom tanks and I haven't been able to get them off live food. unfortunately they died when I had a PH crash.

Are they also called toad fish?

I think toad fish are different, they are brakish and more closely related to the saltwater toad/wasp fish.
