View Full Version : The Herp Bite List

I do not and have not kept herps since I was a preteen, personally, and I've been fortunate enough to have not been bitten by one... although I wouldn't consider box turtles to be threatening biters :P

If you've ever been bitten by an amphibian/reptile, let's hear about it! Be sure to include the specie, the size of the specimen, and how much physical damage it did to its target.

I've been bitten by my blue lined skink. I bought a pair of them at like 4" and they just bite you whenever you try to handle them; doesn't really hurt though. Pretty fast runners too, almost lost them twice!

I've been bitten by iguanas also, by a sub-adult close to probably 2.5ft long, and it really didn't hurt much.

so tell us about the battle damage, rayman.

do iguanas have pointy teeth, or do they have flat molar-like teeth?

Hmm lets see...... here is my list of bites:

Anoles - numourus times

Leopard geckos - a few times

Baby corn snakes - a few times, rarely breaks the skin

Baby bairds ratsnake - twice from my scared male

Ball python (3ft) - thats more of a bite, leaves a nice set of teeth marks

Boa constrictor(5.5ft) - Feeding accedent, I believe I still have a tooth in my thumb from her

Reticulated python(4.5ft) - Just a baby, wants nothing to do with me, shes gotten my twice, once on my finger and another right above my eye

Burmese python(8ft) - First time I was lucky, it was a feeding responce and got my shirt more then anything. Second time I wasnt so lucky, another feeding responce but he got me on the wrist and held it, I caught him before he could constrict, punctured a few veins but could of been a lot worse, almost had to go to the hospital. (at 6 feet these snakes are strong enough to kill)

Take each of those bites and add in extra soreness and swelling for a few days from being allergic, It serves as a painful reminder that these are still wild animals, and when working with dangerous ones you need to be very careful, no matter how calm the animal may seem, for its natural instincts will overpower anything learned in captivity.

Wow, now THAT is a fine list of battle scars. Do you feel anything from anole and gecko bites?

DaemoNox
04-02-2005, 4:42 PM
Anoles didnt feel like much, the leapard gecko did manage to break the skin and was a bit sore, but nothing like the snake bites

Been "nailed" by Boa's from 11" to 11', by Burms from 24" to 15', by one Retic 13', and by one very nasty Green Tree Python at least 7 times.

I had everything from small nicks to multiple stitches!

I love this stuff!

i had a couple. Worse was when the 5 foot black snake got me between my nose and eye,. Me and my dad had to lie to my mother bvout that one. She made us a deal when we caught it if it bites me she choping the head off it. So that was dads and mine little secret. I got nailed in the thumb by a 3 and a half foot garder snake i caught . The black snake didnt realy hurt but did break the skin and was bleeding alittle. The garder just left a whole bunch of little droplets of blood. Iguana bit me cant remember where but it got me i think it was on my hand between thumb and for finger.

Although I have only been bitten by 2 pets, a 10" tokay gecko and an 8" soft shell turtle, I have been bitten by some herps in the wild. They include , a 6' indigo snake, an 8' boa, gopher snake, kingsnakes, bullsnake. terrapins of various kinds, an eastern box turtle, a 4' caiman, and a water moccasin, a 18"black taegue, and a couplle of green iguanas. It was always my fault. The soft shell took stitches as did the taegue and one iguana bite. The caiman took only a couple of stitches bot the deeper punctures got infected and cost me a week in the hospital ward. I got lucky with the moccasin as it's fangs went THROUGH the web of my thumb and envenomation was minimal. There was a lot of pain but not much tissue destruction. I used to teach survival foods and shelter class in Panama so it was only fair for the critters to try and bite me as I at most of them.Caiman is quite tasty.

I bow down to guppy too heh.

How was the boa bite? Terrapin bites don't remove flesh?

guppy
04-18-2005, 10:23 PM
Tho boa bite bled pretty good but since I pulled the teeth out of my arm without yanking away it did not slice, sulfa and dry dressings took care of it. Big turtles like river terrapins are dangerous and can take fingers easily, some can take chunks the size of baseballs. The only ones I was bitten by were small and while I was cut I did not lose flesh. Also watchout for thier claws.

MAN I wish we could get snakes over here in NZ!!

Due to strict bio-security laws, and small flightless birds being severely endangered, snakes are a BIG no-no here... Not even zoo's have them!

Same with pirahna, not allowed them, 'cause they'd survive too well in our main river, the Waikato... :swear:

Well this is my list most are do to me:

Anoles many many times
North American Alligator, got my hand hurt bad, little sucker tore the skin when he rolled.
Horse back of the head, three stiches
Rottweiler, BAD BAD, five hours on a surgions table lost count at 850 stiches, Back of my head and neck look more like a road map.
Muski still have the scars on my upper arm.
North American Pike, have small scars lower arm
Piranha, nice circular scar left hand
American Eel, did not like being hooked. My friends were laughing so hard they couyld not help. Said it reminded them of saturday morning cartoons. Unless your the one running around with a four foot eel rapped around your arm and head while he's bitting the S#%t out of you. And the slime is so wonderful, and Lets not forget about the infection oh boy it was so much fun.

Thr Rottweiler was one of our kennel projects we used to train rotts for perimiter protection, You let him lose and he will watch and destroy any intruders. I was working blue 29" 145LBS hard and when I was done a female was released into the yard for a buyer. Blue was worked up and pull me over a three foot fence by the neck, tore two big ripps in the back of my neck missed my juglure by 1/4 inch. I got lose but he was on my head. I can honestly say I know what a rotts ass looks like from the other side. I was home on leave from the Marines and was able to break loose. The head bite left a scar the runs from my left eye all the way to the back of my head. All in all two 6" scars back of neck, two 4" scars on the other side of my neck "he needed a better grip", one long fang mark that was the result of me choking him and pulling on my head out of his mouth its just above the left eye and all the way to meet the other scars on my neck. The doctor lost count at 850 and three hours on the table. We sold the dog he had no fear of me and I could not work him anymore. He did a job on a guy in Kansas two years ago in a junk yard they found the chump in a recked car bleeding for someone to call the police. He had to deal with Bluse for 6 hours I had my fun in under 6 seconds. OH boy

I'm not even gonna bother adding up my herp bites...... way too many to remember.

The only bad ones I've ever gotten were from a tokay that wouldn't let go, a big anitsocial iguana and almost losing a finger to my argentine tegu. I made the one time only mistake of preparing his food and not washing my hands before getting into his enclosure. As I set the bowl down he sniffed my finger and opted to go for that instead. Now Chief can crush mice and whole trout heads with one bite, so I wasn't able to move my finger for a while. I was lucky though, he didn't break it...or rip it off.

Tegus aren't monitors. :wall: Chief is supposably about 8 months-1 year old. He's about 33-35 inches long (he won't straighten out and hold still for long enough to get a real accurate measurement). Last week he was at the vet and weighed in at 3.8 lbs.

piranha45
05-29-2005, 7:46 PM
tegu are pretty similar to varanus though, perhaps?

cenecker
05-30-2005, 1:38 AM
Well yes and no. They're both large predatory lizards, but that's about it. They don't share much genetic ancestery.

Varanids are also much more primative animals. Tegus are much more evolved and intelligent (My big tegu Chief is house-broken...if you believe that :) ).

Ok I got an addition to add yesterday. Anyone ever seen a Tire Tack eel sleep upside down well me either. I had so many problem with this guy and I tought I had it solved. I went to feed him and there he was up-side down in his PVC tube. I thought Dam , and removed top and reached in to pull him from the tube. He is a very deep sleeper apparently and as I was pulling him by the head when he woke up. Blinked his eyes and at that time I realized this was not goin to end well. I made a dash for safety with my eel right on my hand he grab my little finger did very little damage but mostly startled the S#$t out me. Greetings everyone, :newbie: here. I've been dealing with herps since I was a young 'un. To say the least I'm just blown away from all the stuff yall have. I though I was doing good with a 150 gallon tank. :screwy:
Lets see, bites:

Snakes- Numerous colubrids-Green snakes, Garters, Kings, Ratsnakes, Corns, Racers, almost every type of colubrid in the South East.
Pythons-Balls, Burmese, Womas, Scrubs, Carpet.
Boas-Red-tails, Hog Island, Green Anaconda, Yellow Anaconda.
None were that bad. The Woma was about the worst because it was a sneaky bite like one of the colubrids, and got a full imprint. The Green Anaconda left three teeth in one of my knuckles. I got bit by my friends yearling Albino Burm four days ago, 18 holes in the same finger. Ticked me off more than anything.

Turtles-Box, Snappers, Musk, Red-ears, all were young ones, so no harm no foul.

Lizards-Iguanas, Skinks, Anoles, Geckos, Savannah Monitor, Nile Monitor, Black Throat Monitor. The worst from these wasen't actually a bite. I did get tail whipped by a 5 1/2 ft. Iguana across the back. Not cool, worse than a bite. When in FL. I'll walk around conventions with anoles attached to my ear lobes.

Crocodillians-American Alligators, Spectacled Caimens, Dwarf Caimens. Again all young ones, so no harm no foul.

No venomous as of yet, I hope to never be that unlucky. I'll have to post some pics from some of our hunts sometime.

Holding him hurt as well, scales are worse than sandpaper especially against the grain( hehe no other wa yto say it).

Mali Uromastyx- 9 in.
Milk Snake- 24 in.

You wouldn't think that Box turtles could do much damage... One time when I hand fed my 8" Terrapin Carolina carolina he got me by accident. It was like getting cut by a knife, It went clear to the bone, and left a nice scar on my middle finger.

He was just mad that you were flirring him off. seriously, turtles have hellacious bites. I saw a Nat. Geographic film once that showed some small african turtles mobbing a duck until they drug it down and ate it. Pretty cool but now when I go swimming anywhere with a good turtle population I imagine them after me like the classic piranha movies.

So this is kinda funny:

My ex boyfriend's dad and uncle came over to the apartment. They were looking at my golden skink. Ex's dad asked about, is it mean, etc. I was like "No way, he's really nice, loves attention! Do you want to hold him?"

Reach in to pick up "Goldie" and the damm skink latches onto my finger and wouldn't let go! I've had that skink for 4 years, NEVER had it bite or act mean! Ex's dad and uncle are laughing so hard they are crying, I'm running into the kicthen with this skink dangling from my hand, trying not to swear or cry. Goldie let go after I ran some cold water over him, but no one would handle any of my animals after that!

It didn't really hurt, but OMG WHY did it have to freak out with company present?!

I forgot about the salamanders, lol. I have been bitten by mudpuppies, rough skinned newts, tiger salamanders, and a lesser siren. in all those cases I was more concerned with not hurting the critter than getting it to let go, they don't hurt.
