Hey Wyldfya,
Since your visit to my house last Saturday I have had two pairs of my homegrown Turquoise spawn for their first time. Looks like I will be keeping at least four of these fish for now instead of selling them.
They are only 10-1/2 months old and it will take time for them to prove themselves but these are 100% bred and born in my tanks right here in the USA; hormone free.
They are still pretty small but they spawned much earlier than their Asian imported hormonized parents.
Man, am I good or what? Discus are putty in my hands. LOL.
RE: Your spotted Turquoise, "All three of these discus came from Mac's Discus." No wonder it's familiar. Same strain I have from Mac one generation removed but homegrown in my case. Looks like you took its photo as soon as you got it home. I imagine its looking sharp by now..

Good deal on those turqs! At some point I'll be getting some of those from you.
Turquoise Pair 1 of 2 spawned their second time. Lots of eggs and only a couple eggs fungus at 24 hours. This pair incorporates the prettiest of the herd, the female. This is unusual for me to have good eggs from 10-1/2 month old fish.
They often need to be 12-15 months before the fertility rate is really good but they haven't hatched. Its a good sign when the young pairs don't eat their spawns right away.
I am more convinced than ever that the hormone treatment is a widespread problem among many SE Asian imported Discus. The group their parents came from were spawning at 15 months and all the eggs would be bad in 24 hours.
It took four pairs to get one fertile pair out of the originals. That fertile pair raised a couple broods then have never produced another one year later.
I was really ticked off. In the past, four pairs would be fertile and half would be good parents. I think hormones effect fertility and brood instincts due to masculinization of the females from methyl testosterone exposure.
If other discus keeper have sources whose fish grow up to be good breeders then you have valuable connections. Wish all discus sellers would stop handling doped fish. It hurts the hobby and the fish. All it accomplishes is more color on little fish a couple months sooner than they should have them.
If they prove to be good parents then I'm sure I'll make some good deals for local friends, those who don't mind picking up small fish.

Hi Chris,
I have one extra red turquoise of this strain available. It's one of those I raised and kept for myself. Just in case it would help you get your own pair of red turquoise. Age ~13 months. As you know, my fish are hormone free fertile breeders and this one needs a good home.
Almost identical to the one in the photo you posted. I sold these to Bob's, Barbie and Evergreen. If you picked it up from one of them they may be siblings. They certainly resemble each other closely.

Also I would like to thank all on the advice on how to get these guys less shy. Obviously they have lost there shyness.

I currently have only one Blue Diamond adult (Bobo the Terror) and one mixed juvenile (Copper). Bobo was the runt when I first got him 5 years ago and he refused to eat for the longest time; allowing his two Snakeskin tankmates to gobble it all up. Then one day he just perked up, started eating all the food and chasing the Snakeskins away from it. Unfortunately, I did not have a backup tank at the time and despite my best efforts the Snakeskins stressed out and perished.
Recently, we decided to try adding another pair of discus in the vain hope that Bobo had mellowed. The two juveniles (Copper and Sweeny) did well at first, but it was starting to look like we had another Bobo as Sweeny liked to bully Copper around. Then at some point Copper seemed to get sick of it all and started turning the tables on Sweeny. Neither fish seemed super stressed and both were eating, but we found Sweeny dead one morning with no outward signs of disease or trauma. Copper seems to have no issues with Bobo, even when Bobo is feeling like a jerk, probably because Copper was used to it with Sweeny.
I've kept discus since I was a kid (usually 4-5 at a time), but I've never had one that was quite as big a jerk as Bobo.
Speaking of the devil, this is a picture thread, ain't it?

He doesn't have much color yet, but he is growing. I will get some new pics as soon as I get them in their tank. Right now they are still in a reserve tank. It's not really big enough for them. I'm just waiting on the 110 to finish. I have a big order of plants coming from Aquaspotworld. Boy do they have a selection.

Here's mine, the large blue saph and the large pigeon blood rule the tank so it's difficult to get shots of the others. They don't bully the others but they have to be first to everything and even enjoy supervising the water changes

Some of my discus. The pictures aint great. Can anyone tell me what those light colored discus are? I bought them from a local breeder, who said they where young bleu turq. But after 6 months they are still whit, flesh colored. I think they are just an ugly mixed breed of discus. Some of them where evens stunted, which i thought wass a baby discus look. The orange and the bleu one are from stendker, the europian breeding facility of discus. They are in a lot beter shape then the five pall ones.

Sorry if i'm naive...but why would he lose $70 like that?
It was an auction... He knows he looses money on the fish but well I guess he doesn't care that much?
Here is difficult to find good breeders, so I bought mine as white pigeon, blue diamond, red marlboro and snakeskin. What do you think? The first one was like the last one, when he was younger!

Good looking setup, have you ever considered going with a lighter colored substrate and a blue background? It brings out better colors in your discus, I think.

My big blue-
I felt like playing around with photo shop... I like it. (Of course it is just a filter on a a fairly good picture I took. The original size is 1920x1200 for my desktop... so it might look a little odd with photobuckets restraints.

Hi King Borris,
your tank is superb, I have begun research for a tank I am putting together in the next 12 months. And your tank is what I have visualized in my head, wilds and all. Looking forward to the challenge of discus. Thanks for sharing.

They look good. The blues look a little stunted though. Your red marlboro (commonly the opposite marlboro red) is actually just a pigeon blood.

Geez, don't say that. It's more than the double of the price of a pigeon blood
But int this pic, he had the same color pattern

[B]Lot's of pretty Discus but it's time to give the wild Discus some exposure.
First, a few Rio Negro Heckels, then some run of the mill Rio Nhamunda' Blue Discus and lastly a friend's Peruvian Green, probably from Tefe' region.

Then just to show off, some of my homegrown Leopard Frog Plecos I have available for sale. These are also known as Peckoltia spL134. They are almost certainly not a true Peckoltia since current research is showing very few aquarium Peckoltia actually are Peckoltia so eventually the will receive proper scientific descriptions. These are not an easy fish to find any more.

:WHOA::eek: ive been thining about doing a discus tank for a while and this thread has finally inspired me to do so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks guys.:)
Hi
Just wanted to share the pics of my new discuss plantation tank i just setup the Sera co2 fert system think it started to work already on 1-2b / min. adding sera florena once a week.
Added the new plants as u see they need to sit for a couple of days for the roots to mature to grow better when planted....
Added 4 new baby discuss i reckon they would be a few months old now....3" i guess.
Qs. when would they start to pair up and mate ? wouldnt mind to make them breed...
I am a newbie to plantation and discuss....my first 55g.
Hope to hear some good pointers from the pro's here :headbang2
