santoury

3 things
1. That thing is the smallest gigas I've ever seen!!
2. What do you mean by "go crazy" ?
3. The tank is ... WAYYYYY TOOOOO SMALLLLLLL EVEN at this tiny size he is at, same for the other fish.
Panerai1950
06-25-2007, 2:41 AM
1) He's at about 7 to 8" there was a smaller one at the fish store at around 6", but i chose him coz he's more active.
2) Crazy as in swimming very fast and sometimes banging the glass.
3) This is a temporary tank for them, this tank was for my small red wolf fish, before i traded it for the cat, therefore i kept them in here for now coz my bigger tank is still in progress.

I would be going crazy too, in that tank, and the catfish can almost touch the opposite sides - you should not have ANY of those fish in such a temporary tank. I am sorry, but I don't think you will be happy with any responses on here...
Panerai1950
06-25-2007, 2:49 AM
Haha! thats alright, i understand what you mean, but im working on it, coz i dont wana my fishy in that tank too, i cant just dump them in my bigger tank coz the water is not ready
santoury

Talk about putting the cart before the horse - you should not get fish until you can properly care for them. I hope you do not kill any of them through this mistake. Pray tell, how big is the new tank?
Panerai1950

New tank at 6', i know u going to say its still not big enough, but planning to put him in my friend pond when it rearch 2' and buy an gold aro

I would get a cover on the tank.. A good solid acrylic one maybe an inch thick for weight so you don't have to block the light trying to hold the lid down :)

Yea, ordered a custom made one yday, will receive it tmr, its not an inch thick, but 20mm, so it should have enough weight to hold it down! :)

nice the 6ft tank should last it about 1 month then what
how big is your freinds pond
dude, im sorry to rain on you parade but that is really irresponsible.
as much as we want things sometimes, u have to wait until you are fully capable AND SOME to jump into something like gigas care.
i'd love a ray but i know i just cant give it what it needs, so i would leave it in the store to hopefully be picked up by someone else who would hopefully be more devoted than me.
not getting a ray now gives me something to look forward to and prepare for so when i get it i can do my best to make it as happy as possible.
come on man. sell it or something. it needs a better home.
(with it going crazy at night, maybe get a nightlight in the room or one of those dim internal tank lights to make a more gentle transition fro light to dark. i think the same thing happens with some arowana, i dont know because i dont have one because at present i am not capable of caring for one!)
do the right thing! :)

While it's not the most responsible 6ft tank or not there are other members who have had them(and still do) in smaller than 1k gallon tanks and gave them up to friends/or plan to, and some who have thought of buying one to grow it out and bar-b-que it later. So while you might not approve at least he has a good home for it later or a plan.
I'm betting 90% of them end up in similar situations you just don't see them posting pictures on the internet. There are at least 100's brought into the u.s. every year probably more like thousands. People wanting to make a buck is what gives into selling extremely large growing fish to just anyone. And hassling one guy because he bought a pima, wants a couple answers but has a friends pond to put it in while you might deter him won't change the 100's of other people who have them and don't have a pond to put them in.
Just give him a break. And jude time to get off the soap box.

:iagree: Sad but true... At least he has a friend's pond as a possible future home for it. Wonder if the climate in Hong Kong would support breeding pimas in ponds????

why would you want that thing in a pond...
I wouldn't want a 15 foot fish in any pond I own lol. I would never get near the water...

I swim with them all the time. Just gotta be careful they don't get over you and start hunting.

How long before your 6 footer is cycled dude? That "baby" is gonna need moved pronto. If your new tank isn't cycled, squeeze some gunk out of THIS tanks filter in and speed things up.....swap a couple of gallons of the water over every day too. Baby aint gonna like where it is for too long.... Best of luck - would hate to see that 'Pima die....
Matt - Any more advice you can give to help this situation?

Keeping a baby that have the capabability of growing 10-15ft, either your crazy or you must be super rich...
Condo/Apartments price are way too expensive and way too small to keep such a large tank... Around $300,000 US to own maybe a 800sq ft or slighty larger apartment/condo (thats include the kitchen, bathroom etc etc).. and a 6ft tank = no room to walk :nilly:
So id take that your super rich! ^^
I hope that you give your arapaima a nice enjoyable home in the near future ^^
And I dont think it will survive the winter, cause the coldest temperature in Hong Kong can be as low as 15 celisus...
But I know one thing for sure, if thats get too big, it will be his dinner ^^;;
Hot pot at winter + hmmm tasty fish = A delicious meal! :D

You said it best. Get that thing into something bigger as soon as possible. And get him growing in a tank by itself.

Pimas need 12,000 gallon + to live happily for their entire life. More for several pimas. What will you do in the winter in hong kong when it get cold?
I really wanted a pima for my 2,250 gallon tank, but I realize now that that would be sufficiant for say, a day(lol).
Not only that, but it is illegal to own a pima without a liscense(i think) and the store cannot sell it without a liscense(i think).
By the way, how big is your tank that's being cycled?

Not only that, but it is illegal to own a pima without a liscense(i think) and the store cannot sell it without a liscense(i think).
The legality of them is this: They are CITES App II (for now). That means you have to have a permit to move them across an international border (worldwide regulation). Each animal will have it's own paper work saying it was moved legally. That paper work should stay with the animal as it gets moved around. If a gov't agent shows up at your door and you don't have the paper, good luck proving it's legal and not a black market animal smuggled in. Also, any time it crosses a border, you have to reapply for the permit to move them.
In the US, they also fall under various state regulations and prohibited species lists. Some states have let the local gov't take over this.... so you must check ALL the laws before getting into it.

I doubt the government agent will stop by your home and check if you have illegal fishes or not.. Unless you make a big rant / fuss over the internet :P
and if they do.. then down down down under the toilet bowl :P

Wonder why ppl bother putting pemas in their tanks. Old kidney shaped inground pools would be ideal. Those old pools have rounded corners for the pemas to maneuver in. :)

What do you mean "the waters not ready yet"???
If the filter media in that tiny tank is keeping up with the bio load(cycled tank)... take all of the media out of that filter and add it to the canister,w/d,hang on the back etc on the big tank.... stand on one leg, left hand on your right testical, screaming "pima's shouldn't be availible to the public" and budda boom... you got yourself a cycled tank :D

no use thinking that when you buy a fish you know you wont be able to keep. most public aquaiums have already got too many fish and dont want more.

Correct. We can't take any animals just because. Especially controlled species like this. There are only a handful of Aqauriums that can handle an adult Arapaima in the US, not to mention needing the paperwork. It's a tough fight to make the fish legal after it's here ilegally. It took me three months.

if your baby pima still going 'crazy'...
just try this...it should be work..
i have done before on my baby pima..
1)move the harming addition..like the sharp or the root tree like i can see
(if i'am not mistaken)..
2)controlled your water flow + bubbles...let's make it peace..slow running ..
3)shut your lamp..
maybe in 3-4 days your precious baby pima will calm down..
it should work in time..
can't wait pima new home..
good luck..

As irresponsible as it was to acquire him now, I won't criticize you. You just bought what is perhaps biggest dream of all MFK's. Monster fish keeping doesn't get any bigger, unless you have some 28' huso huso. This fish is my dream fish, and I bet it was yours too. Do all you can to care for him, and get that pond ready quickly. It isn't too late to make up for your mistake, and I believe you can have a great future with him if you are a true MFKer
