I didn't even think about that. My lfs back in North Carolina had a shark pond in it. they had 3 black tip reef sharks and one massive hawaii grouper.

why do you say that? i have no idea on how salt water tanks work, but i sure would love to see something like that. You could almost make a tide pool of sorts (minus the tide)

Just think of the water changes!
exactly!
#1 freshwater changes i can understand, you have to remember salt gets expensive!
#2 temperature fluctuation
if it were indoor maybe... still not worth it
& outside don't even bother!

I live in florida and when my dad was a kid he lived on anna maria island. He told me that were a couple of guys who thought it would be funny if they let a couple of juvi tarpon loose in a retention pond. Tarpon are able to live in fresh and they lived in the pond for years. My dad said he used to see them role and they lived off blue gill and tilapia.

biggest issue would be evaporation, you'd have to have a pretty slick top off system setup
i have to add 1-2 gal a day with only a small opened top sump

yeah, and you could tech them to cure people's bad eyesight with the lasers. That would help sharks get a better name for themselves.
I was askiing that queston for a long time, but it is possible yet very very expensive, you will have to deal with evaporation, temp fluctuations and rain water. Though maybe it could be done with the hardiest species of salt water fish, and the right equipment,,,that could be a good way to investigate.

I figured I would add something ( a little late though). I live in Florida and when I went to the Keyes in July I went to a dive shop and they had an awesome pond there. It had some Massive (probably 30 inches) Parrotfish a green moray eel about 6 feet long, a huge grouper, and some other fish that were hiding. It was outside and had a walkway over it. It was one of the coolest things I've seen. I didn't have a camera on me though. :(
Yup I also live in FL (YAY I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE FL PEOPLE ON HERE FINALLYYYYYYYYYYYYY) ne ways so I took a trip down to the keys to Marine Camp (you gotta go one time its the shizz) and they had this HUGE HUGE Tide Pool looking pond along with a ray pond, it was pretty cool. Then also another cool thing was that they blocked off a saltwater section with nets and you could dive down and there was this underwater hotel - not kidding, it was the coolest thing I ve ever seen its like the people were in the tank and fish were observing them :grinyes:

A LFS here has one...
It's approx 600 gallons.
Very large Groupers, cowfish, tangs, rays and eels.
It's very neat cause they all come to the surface to get love.
Very tame.
Very cool.

yeah; my friend also has a saltwater pond but it's pretty small. PLUS he lives right by the ocean, with some natives in it.
As soon as I get back to the states, I am hoping to setup a saltwater pond for smoothhound sharks, there s a guy with a 35,000 gallon indoor shark pond and a 18,000 gallon shark qt pond, he's pn a few message boards, I think his username is mattiej. Saltwater ponds are doable, just not exactly practical.

i saw one on one of those dreamhome shows on hgtv. it was in Hawaii and it was about 20x20 and 8 feet deep. it was in the entrace of the house in the open, it had mostly aggressive fish like triggers and wrasses and damsels but it was so huge that it was able to support coral and coral fishes and the tangs and stuff did not bother it. also it had the natural hawaiian sun to light it, then as if that wasnt enough when you went bellow the house into a wine cellar and it had an acrylic wall not visible from above and it looked like a huge aquarium and there was a viewing room in the cellar. pretty much any mfk'ers dream!!!!

JEEEEEZ. That would seriously be a dream home. Did they mention what type of maintnance they do on it? A LFS near me has several indoor sw ponds. One tide pool type pond with smaller anemones, crustaceans, etc, a ray pond with several species of rays and a HUGE porcupine fish, and a shark pond with black tip, nurse, and leopard sharks. I couldn't imagine the maintnance that these ponds require though.

I know a guy that lives near me with a huge outdoor pond. The groundwater around our area has saltwater intrusion, so his artisian well brings up brackish/saltwater up from the ground into his pond which is about 200 ft by 50 ft. He keeps native fish that come from the brackish waters around here. He has tarpon, snook, cobia, tripletail, jacks, snappers, stingrays, red drums, and black drums in it. He feeds them scraps of yellowfin tuna he gets from the charters he runs.

you almost need to pump in water directly from the bay then filter it UV it and finaly test it in a holding tank, then you need to run in tons of quality RO/DI to another holding tank for topoffs, that could get pricey but if it's affordable??? the sky is the limit, I would definitly do it with enough resources it's just with a pond you get evap and humidity to controll if it's outdoors in say, Florida then you will definitly go through some evap and indoors the condensation and humidity could be a nightmare, I would go to a working one similar to what you want and see how they did it, then decide if it's what you want.

oh, yeah, if it's out doors you might run into some temperature issues with fish that aren't hardy enough like goldfish and catfish to take the swing in the water oxygen levels.

It would be awesome if you could build a pond right up next to your house and have a viewing window similar to a window well so you could see them easily.
