from my experiance, switch the jars diet to cichlid gold as the staple asap... keep it varried but avoid crickets or it mite stop taken pellet once its started... watch it fill out in no time, and colour inprovements are wkd!

s/he is just clocking 4" atm... feeds on frozen blood worm, torn up frozen prawns droped in slowly, cichlid gold mini floating pellet, most insects that come through the window, had a good go at a algae wafer yesterday too...
took 3days to eat after i stoped feeding crickets and its been fine ever since...

watched ur vid and ur jar is gorgous... if its a real problem switchin foods jus keep the crickets feed lots of carrots and vitamines...

seriously at this young age if they are eating pellets you have so much more chance of a healthy happy growing baby.. you don't have to go through all the starvation times that so many arow owners go through with their babies.. very very good baby you have there ..........already!! now just keep tank with weights so no jumping..

I've never owned any kind of aro but I'm learning they're quite the picky eaters... He'll eat cichlid pellets all day long and the occasional floating blood worm...

If I can endure the waiting period of 8 month for one of my aro not eating, this is nothing man.:D

well i can understand patience but that is way too long.. your almost there as long as he is putting the pellet in his mouth.. keep repeating until successful...and feed a little less of other food so he is hungary at pellet feeding.. {don't believe in starving }

Exactly liz... more to the point i have never found the need to truely starve a fish, smaller portions and missing lunch may be but never not feed at all for 24hrs, its always seemed like asking for hungry strike to me...

you and i think alike ... i have always thought if they go too long without eating they will not find the need to start up again.. if you shrink their belly they will not have anymore hunger pangs.. i do it exactly like you..i did it this way to get my CK eating pellets and my Jaguar eating pellets.. and like you..once they ate a pellet i never fed them anything else until they were loving their pellet more then anything else you could offer..of course never ever offered live food again.. that would just be torment i think:confused: .

Those Baby aros with the egg sacks had their picture taken towards the end of March this year.

Here are a few picture today. 5 out of six survived. The survivors range from 4 to 8 inches today. Only the 8 incher is in a tank by itself the rest share a tank with 4 clowns.

Five, actually. However only four of them share the same tank. I've had trouble keeping them together in the same tank before. Not this time. I was inspired by a tank in Beijing to keep trying. I saw a tank there with 6 arows in a community tank in 2005.

None of my fish should be alive if you go by conventional wisdom as it relates to proper stocking and tank sizing. I guess they follow me as their leader when it comes to defying death.;)

liz... i got some bad bad news... i got called away for a day, returned to find the baby silver had jumped out the breeding trap i left him in and i presume the bigger 5" silver terorised him to death. i fond him belly up upon my return. I have decided to cut the jar out the com for awhile and not rush out and replace him. i will get two more 5" silvers asap. and i'm going to keep the silver and black separated until i do for obvious reasons... instead of the jar, i will try and source a 6" rtg. and possible make the paur of silvers, a pair f greens but greens seem impossible to get as young in uk at the mo.

wow things are not going too well with two arows babies lost in a week.. i am so sorry but i think you are right not to run out and replace him.. i think that is the best idea to cut the jar out for now.. that sounds like a better plan..but what ever you decide or new additions please let us know..so sorry again i feel your loss:(

I absolutely agree. I don't think there is any fish as majestic as the silver arowana.

My girlfriend LOVES arowanas, but was hesitent with me upgrading to a 400 gallon. I let her know that if we were to keep the aro, we would have to upgrade or get rid of him...lets just say I have a new 400 gallon in the works.:naughty:

i feed him what i feed all of my fish he eats flake loves flakes:screwy: he is also eating hikari pellets o yea and blood worms he is crazy for them 2 :naughty: i let him eat the worms right out of my hand and i feed him worms in the morn and flakes with all of the other fish and 4-5 pellets and at night i may give him 3 to 4 pellets is this a bad diet? some1 told me to feed him pinkies and he will grow fast but that just seems cazy:screwy: to me feeding him a mouse

That sounds like a great diet.. i know he may like to attack the flakes but he really needs things to chew.. but you sound like you are doing GREAT!!! And i would not pay much attention about giving pinkies etc.. he has a balanced diet with the hikari pellets and then a real treat with blood worms and maybe later on you can also give him some frozen silversides and frozen krill.. i think that is an excellent diet and i would continue that for the rest of his life except as he grows go to bigger pellets etc.. they grow quite fast.. in one years time he should be between 15-18 inches if i can remenber correctly.. then they put on girth for awhile and then sprout again.. Believe me they grow fast on pellets and clean pristene water ....... you will not believe how big your baby is in 6 months..:D

Alot of people may get on my case but i would never feed him live anything again... the reason is bait carrys disease, you would be introducing it to your baby and every fish in your tank.. the only live i would ever feed is my own raised feeders.. and that would only be until i could get him off live onto pellets..you have already accomplished this.. your baby in my eyes is wayyyy ahead of the game.. pellets have all the right food amounts protein/veggie matter and vitamins and mineral that he needs.. the frozen blood worms and frozen what ever is just a treat to give him a little different taste etc.. but quite frankly the pellets are his staple.. so forget about all that other stuff.. also even if you have home raised feeders for him that are safe from disease he may go off pellets again.. so i would never want to have to go through starving him to get him to eat pellets again..i would only buy my frozen silversides from a LFS or someplace that packaged it for tropical fish.. :D

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ok i got you as far as the diff disease i feel like a big dog now that you say im ahead of the game :D by getting him 2 eat the pellets and the lfs had him eatting little reds and i got him into the swing of pellets i thank you for the knowledge i think ill just do as you say keep my same feedings going and by the end of the year try getting some silverside from my lfs and see if he eats that along with everything else do they have teeth? the reason i asked is because when i feed my little one i let it eat out of my hand and i nips my fingers :) but i want to know if i could still do this when it gets 12-15inches? how do you sex them? and is it poss to breed them if so what are the do's and dont's

If you read through the multiple arow thread you will see that everyone is hoping they can get a breeding pair..so far they have only been bred in giant fish ponds in china.. so if you get that lucky it will be a astonishing feat... i have not heard of anyone being able to sex arow for sure.. they guess alot:grinno: And yes they have teeth and they have a huge mouth, you will see it soon:WHOA: so i think you will give up putting your fingers there.. in time.. :grinno: Also make sure you weigh down top..i may have mentioned this already bur even the babies jump and close up all open spaces..And lots of luck and please keep us updated with more pics

It always has to be three or more..but some have it up to 11 or 12 or more.. go look through my thread of multiple arows in arow section and you will see some astonishing pics..breath taking.... and ask some of those arow experts about their undertaking...not for the squeamish... it is monster arow fish keeping at its finest:D

My Houdini has been found!

He disappeared without a trace at about 4 inches long ...

I have looked in the over flows at least a half dozen times - never saw him!

Well ... I was doing a major cleaning (in the middle of it as I do this post) and was adjusting one of the tubes that put water back into the tank and all of a sudden he decided to surface and caught a glimpse of him ...

The joker has gained about 2 inches in the month or so that he was missing!

In this case - it paid off to over feed! :headbang2

I'm so glad you found him. How funny. I had a baby clown loach that got into my canister filter once and lived there for a week before I tore it apart out of desparation. He was just happy as could be, safe and well fed........

That was just too bizarre!

It was on the side that the chair was at - so it was the one I looked in most!

He must have went low when the top was moved so I never saw him!

Give me a bit and I will shoot some new shots of him ...

When I lost him ... I decided that he was the last one ...

My boy is back!! :babyblack :woot:

Got my second Silver Arowana 2 days ago.
The first one (which is shown on page 8 in this thread) died of Ich just 2 weeks after i got her.
So finally i got another one at around 4-4,5" and for ~150$
Expensive hobby when you live in the middle of nowhere :D

Anyways... here is a not-so-good pic:

Thanks everyone!

I am so blown away! I looked in that over flow a bunch of times ...

It is the easier one to check too ... he must have went to the bottom when he heard noises of the light & lid being moved!

I should have figured it out because one of the Red Bay Snook's kept looking at that overflow towards the top ...

When I reached in there he pretty much just waited for me to grab him and didn't struggle to get out of my hand - I pulled him out and eased him into the water on the other side of it ... It's good to have him back!

My original idea was to have a tank for Buck the Black Ghost Knife and an Aro
When this was lost - I decided that it wasn't worth it - this Aro (before his disappearance) was taking shrimp from my fingers! I thought that was the coolest thing! As tiny as he was - you could easily sense the power he had - That boy is a powerhouse!

FYI: I am State side and paid $100.00 for my first one ... and he jump with in a few hours of being in the tank!
Didn't find him until he was like a dried Smelt!

No room??

I have 2 paths across my living room! :grinno:
One in front of the couch and one between the chairs and end table that has the 3 baby Bichirs in a ten gallon tank.

Coffee table is leaning on its end in front of the desk that the bedroom TV is on! :nilly:

I got a 210, a 56 tall, 28 bow front, and a 10gal in a living room & dining room combo that is about 20 foot by 13 foot.

... now that is tight quarters! :headbang2
