I don't have one, but I think they are designed to do that to expel any air in them. They also supposedly do it every day even after being setup for awhile.
Someone else may chime in and say I'm wrong, but that's my understanding based on what I've read about 'em.

correct they are designed to shutdown to allow air to release not sure if supposed to be shutting that often.

I have a crazy idea, but it might just work... read the troubleshooting section in your manual:)

although I don't own one, I was under the impression that it is supposed to do this for 1 minute every 24 hours.
perhaps the timing can be reset or changed?

Have you tried tearing it down, chking for proper media xment & then setting it bck up again? This has solved most of the prob.'s descibe like this by other's. And no it is not suppose to shut down more than 1x every 24 hr.'s to "gas off", so something is wrong. That's not the norm for that filter. At worse take it bck, but I bet you will be able to figure it out if you tear it down & go thru it ;)
lol at some replies :D
i think it was going through the bubble purge thing - now it's ok again :owned: .
yes, they need to make the manual look less like packing material... :D

:duh: :OMG: :mwave: :y220d: :y220d: :cool-1: If we all had a $ for every time this happen's, well we wouldn't be so concerned when it did. YEA for you, enjoy that FLUVAL. Say, that bring's up a good ? being debated right now on this same forum, why did you buy that fx5 anyway? lol, really what made you go w/ it over the all the others you could have choose? ;)
i think i've read like 4-5 threads about 'the best canister' filter. i looked at a number of brands - eheim, fluval, rena (?), cascade, magnum and the reviews were all over the place. the fx5 consistently got what is best described as rave reviews from probably every user and it seemed like a lot of the guys with monster set ups (mine is only a 100 gallon) were using it with 'great success!' (as per borat). :headbang2
i knew i didn't want to deal with like possibly three filters in my 100 gallon. i also wanted kick ass water quality since i am planning to put some of my larger cichlids inside. plus i didnt leave enough space behind the tank to have a large hanging filter, so an external canister was basically the only option. plus i've never had a GREAT filter system before, so this seemed to fit the bill.
last of all it's my birthday today, so i decided to spoil myself a bit :naughty:

Every time you plug it in it will run for 2 minutes then turn off for 1 minute then turn back on, and every 24 hours it will turn off for 1 minute....
