You're "small" foam should do the polishing, so you really only need the two mechanical layers
You're about right though
Coarse mechanical...
Find mechanical...
extra bio...
chemical...
I'd like to hear more about what you have planned though.

You are correct. Also, I prefer ceramic cylinders for the bio material.
Also, I don't use anything for chemical. I don't use Carbon.
As for polishing, depends on the tank. I don't always use it.

I just picked up another 180g today. I am inundated by tanks at this point. Anyway..... might sound crazy, but I have an extra Ocean Clear 325 canister and I was going to use it as a standard 3 or 4 stage filter. It seems perfect because of it's size. I figured layers separated by egg crate or plastic disks with holes drilled in them. It's gotta be a good size.
An XP3, for example is 8 1/4" x 15"
OC 325, is 13" x 11"

LOL. Ya, I know......... but I think I have more liquid than solid at this point. When you have to keep a pair of flippers next to your bed, it's a problem.
