Seems a bit light on rock for an african tank IMO. Other than that it looks like a really good start to a nice tank.

lol sorry about that I was answering another thread and it somehow ended up on here...

Rare fish are usually rare for a reason and they almost NEVER make good starter fish. however bay snooks are fairly uncommon and easy to care for.

Well ive been in this whole fish scene for 4-5 years now. I just started getting Serious about it. I started with that 55 gal went to a 60 gal then back to my original 55 gal after I moved because I hated not having any fish to look at.

does anyone in SAN DIEGO know of any good fish stores? Or perhaps Fish stores in California specializing in cichlids?

More rocks definately. Driftwood will just lower the ph and create blackwater which isn't native to the lakes. Try some Flag Stone looks really nice in African tanks IMO. Just being honest I don't like the blue gravel. That tank would of been alot better with White sand. Your little front is cool.

Same as above, use more rocks. The tank seems really bright and the front. would prefer some dimmer hiding spots. What other fish are in their?

1 Frontosa
1 peacock
1 jack dempsey
1 Synodontis nigrita
1 Synodontis Ocellifer
1 crayfish

I know the Jack dempsey is out of place but i saved him from the pond outside. Im most likely gonna trade him for another peacock Cichlid

not a bad start... if you ever can switch to a lower light, make some territories or atleast break up the line of site... these guys will grow up and will not always be the best of friends... some days even I want to be left alone...

Okay, so you got a nice filter, but you can still get a background to hide the green hose. I also think you need more of those very cool rocks (at least until you can not see any more of the baby blue subsraight.):D

Have you used something under the substraight to protect the glass?
lookin' good.

Check out this background. I want to put these in when I redo my 55 this Fall...

http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/6672/cid/4384

17 bucks, easy to install.

I am also think about doing some home made cement rocks using that 30 page pdf on home made rocks that is going around the board.

I have tons of rocks in my tank now, but its harder and harder to make cool caves for my fish as they get bigger, so I want to give sculpting them a try.

That background does look pretty cool. I like the ones that aren't supposed to look exactly like an actual habitat - those are just too fake to me. For my next tank, if I don't end up doing the styrofoam/resin background like in the DIY section, I'll be looking for this link.
