its good if you keep up a regular routine of water changes weekly, they are not good if you do this once a month or every few months.

I won't even do a w/c less than 50%. Just do them often and watch your tank/new water temps.

that means your filter pads are clogged and need washed. The overflow is to stop to much pressure from being placed on the pump. Gives it an easy path to go through instead of making it work harder to go through the filter material.

I do 50 and sometimes 75% water changes on my tanks.

Yep weekly 50's here as well.
Alternate the filters though.
This week, the ac's only, and next week, the cans. only, and so on.

I must be in the minority here...I test regularly and have multi-filter systems and have no problem at all maintaining stability with 25% water changes every other week. To me... the added stress on the fish, especially my aro, isn't worth the dubious benifits of larger, more frequant, water changes.

PS. This is the way I've been doing it for 30 years or so and I've yet to have any water quality issues.

maybe you and I think alike. If a small one gets the job done, why waste time and water with huge changes?

They make test kits for a reason:)

I do 50% on large tanks weekly, 50% on small tanks weekly or bi-weekly, depending on need.

I change 1/3 every week, sometimes 40% in my "monsterfish" tanks.

but I never really get it down to 50%.

Me as well... about 25% every two weeks with very good results. My tanks are very lighly stocked (about 0.5" per gallon) and very over filtered (20x per hour... probably more like 10x with full media).

The only time i would do a 50% water change is if there was a water quality problem that i water change could fix. After we found out that it was our tap water that was causing the ammonia spikes, we went to RO water purchased from the local H2o store, and we don't have ammonia spikes now.

we found that our 100 gal had water stability issues because of very low PH and no buffering capabilities.. so we added crushed coral to bring up the PH and that problem is now solved too.

And like my hubby said already, 25% changes every other week keeps the nitrates in check and the fish don't stress so much..

I never do more than 40%. I usually do 25%-ish but perform them more frequently than once a week.

A lot depends on the stocking and filtration. Of course if you have barely any fish and high filtration, small water changes are fine. But vice versa, and you need a lot more effot.
