NANO are the **** thats my **** that my **** bananas! Here4s the deal, set them up right the are sooo easy, skimp out and dont grasp the comcept of a nano reef, not so fun. good lights are key, if you buy a nano cube get the lx modle, and ....... youshoudl get sea horses, iaheva frind who has sea horses, friggin, BA ne whoo.. good live rock is the corner stone to a sucsessful nano or any salt tank for that matter. becuase nanos are so samll go all out, get great bulbs, great everything, it will whow when youhaev so much control over hte enviorment. i guess ill just have to come over htere and show you for a weekend, help you set it up?

nanos are usaully 3 gallons or less and they are very hard to maintain i have one and i change the water every day. i only have a couple of crabs and a clown, but if you set it up correctly it will be really nice.

Nano's are usually small....

3 gallons or less is a betta bowl.

I wouldn't suggest touching a tank under 5 gallons.

If you want to put it in a 3 gallon and change the water everyday, I suppose you must have some free time on your hands so go for it.

My setup is a Marineland 5 gallon Hex. Some live rock, rubble base, no sand and 2 camel shrimp.

camel shrimp? do they just look like cleaner shrimp, or are they a type of stomatopod (mantis shrimp)?

camel shrimp are just like, cleanershrip but the appear to have a hump just like a camel and their colors can be more vibrant and contrasted. A nanno, jsut mena that you haev a nano rerf, or a wholereef system simplified to a small space a nano reef can be up to 20 gallon after than it is jsut a reef. i aheva reeal good website link here somewheres, ill post it later. but it jsut like if you took a huge coral reef and shrunk all the contnets to a smaller sized. everythign is stil there , jsut smaller and more dondenced, some tiem peole tryto cookie cutter a reef wher ethe nano is actually jsut a peice of the reef but not hte whole system, im all about natural filtration, and the biological processes that fit together with each specis of animal youhave, and elemnet you put int het tank. ill get sme pic of the nano i tanke care of. if youdo it right youreef will be over flowing and thriving with coral and other creatures, such as doc has experianced iwht his camel shrimp! :hearts:

The power filter claimed most of the shrimp fry. I'm getting 3 x 10 gallon tanks started so that the I can remove the next hatch. I'm going to run off 30 gallons from my 125 and run sponge filters. I'm going to try and remove the fry with a turkey baster(my favorite multipurpose aquaria tool). My digi camera is down so I missed the SWARM that was there the first day, I'm down to about 25 swimmers, there might be more in the rock.

Anyone have any experience with raising shrimp?

I've got liquifry, some ground pellet food. Need ideas of food.

I had no expectations of this hatch making it through. I wasn't going to shut down the filter and kill the tank. I'm going to be ready for the next round though.

Hopefully I'll be sending everyone a couple camels for their nano's soon!

i was reading an article today in Aquarium fish magizine.. and it had a small bit about mulipling camel shrimp. it was about refugiums, and how you can put incompatable invertebrates in them and wha la! they spread! shrimp galore, because there are no preators. it would be like putting deer somewhere w/o any cars or guns lol, theyd florish wiht out any natural enemies. any who here is a pic!

side note!
i want shrimpes! lol seriously im all game!.

oh and mabey creating a mini refugium would be nice for your shrimp, i mean you dont need to haev it hooked to your tank, but put some live rock adnd haev it under light so htey get natural alge to feed on, and macro alge like calerpa so they can pick off of that. try to haev natural elements avaiable, they are scavengers and will eat most anythign but they like to pick thinkgs off rocks, im not 100% positve but htere diet is mostly veggy,.
side side note
~ another name for them is hingebeak shrimp,

they are my favoite small shrimp htey haev the most vibrant colors

P.S.

this is what the alphabet would looklike if Q and R were missing

:woot:

My nano at this point is pretty much just a refugium. I set it up, cycled my rock, did a water change, got everything back to good, dropped in the shrimp and was waiting to put in the carpet anemone and clown this week, untill the little fellas shnowed up. I'll start one of my other hex 5's and make that the nano. I'm going to leave the shrimp be and get a hatchery going.

There will be some more copulation on the kitchen counter.....

A NEW HATCH!

This time I'm ready, I'm pulling most of the fry to put in a nursery. Feeding them golden pearls, ground flake, salt fry food, phyto mix.

They both molted about a week ago and they hatched this morning. I'd guess 200-300 fry.
