This is Willie the self-liberating, gravel-eating, goldfish-slaying african lungfish. I hope I am doing this picture thing right.

Hes got a weird snout on him but hes still a awesome fish
Nice looking lungfish, looks to be about the size of my big fellow, at least from what i can guess from the ramshorn snack on the gravel. How well has he managed when he gets himself outa the tank? Looks pretty good from the pics, mine hasn't managed to get out yet buti think he's just biding his time until i'm not looking.

He has survived for hours laying on the floor until someone found him. He is about 25-26 inches long. I have to keep a brick on the hoods to keep him in. He messed up he snout crashing into the side of an aquarium (so the previous owners told me). Does anyone know if it is normal for them to suck gravel into their mouths and out of the gill slits (if that is what they are called on lungfish)?
I have never noticed mine doing it but my girlfriend has said that my large one does this usually in the evening and night. I'll try to keep an eye out and see if he does it. I would imagine that its a method of feedin on smaller prey items. but thats just my thoughts on it. I'll have to see if i put pellets in there and see how he does if he even notices them

He is about 13 years old. The previous owners tried a few larger fish in with him. Unfortunately the other fish left with less parts than when the went in.

that thing is awesome. you should see the water at the top of the tank when he gets in a mood and starts whipping back and forth in the tank!
Has he destroyed any filters yet? Mines literally shoved out lift tube and chewed intake strainers to bits. My late lungfish shattered his heater (hence the late part he didnt do too well after that). My large one now has a shatterproof heater and he's filtered by water changes. So there's nothing to throw out eat, or destroy. He does shove his drift wood around looking for food regularly. Very nice age on him mines around 8 from what i gathered from the previous owner and the LFS i got him from.

PS mine hate neighbors as well so only small fast moving (bait) fish are put in with him

From what the previous owners told me he has destroyed 4 heaters. I don't think he smashed them though. I have been looking for something to put in the tank with him. He got agitated and hurt himself on a piece of rock I think. I have heard that terra cotta pots are good. Possibly some plants also?
Right now all i have is the heater and a air stone in the tank with him along with the driftwood. I think i'll add some floating plants this weekend. Or at least non rooted plants. I dont think i could keep rooted plants in the gravel with lead and glue. If i were to use terra cotta i'd make sure there aren't any sharp edges and that he cant get stuck in them (i sometimes knock out the bottem when i use them for breeding). I'd be worried that mine might hammer he way outa the tank with them. He really gets cooking around the tank sometimes.

I believe one reason passing gravel is to clean themselves. I had one that did the same. They are ancient, very cool.

I like the spotty pattern. Mine has no pattern on his head and dorsal region. Does he have any problems with the driftwood? How big is the tank?

Nope. It love hidding underneath ir or sleep side by side with it. It's currently been housed in a 4 footer x 1.5 footer tank.:)
