picked up pike cichlid, it was labeled as a black stripe pike cichlid. Is this accurate or is this mislabeled? I don't have any way to post a pic but the pike has a stripe running the entire length of its body. can anyone help me figure out what kind or fish I have

Betcha $100 its not strigata...lol....they are super rare and hard to find in stores....90% sure its Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela'...they are imported frequently...probably one of the most common pikes seen for sale. They are also the largest growing of the pikes for sale..so you got ur self a nice moster! ;) 2' easily....;). The adults are rather drab compared to other pikes.....and the juv. looks nothin like the adult. Like most pikes...they will eat anything practically...easy to please! Great pike up...lol....

I have kept venezuelan pikes in the past and I find them to very agressive. Well let's say territorial, mine would stake out a little territory and not let any fish near it. It's pretty funny watching a 13'' pike go after a 12'' dovii.
I have noticed that more than 1/2 of the pics on the web of the "strigata" are not correct.
this one is from fish base and they are reliable, this the real strigta PPower?

that kind of looks like a marmorata

Yeah, I have to say that looks a lot like marmorata as well....all be it a weird strain....they normally have the vertical strands....strigata look pretty much like venezuelas from what i understand except they have an black ocelli rimmed in white behind the pectoral fin. Venezuela lack this. I unfortunately don't have an aqualog...and totally hear yaz about the pictures on the web about strigata are actually venezuelas...lol...so yeah......

That picture looks like true strigata, to me. The two species (marmorata and strigata) are very similar in appearance. I included Aqualog's picture of C. strigata.

So strigata keeps the lateral line huh? I knew about the ocelli behind the pectoral, but the lateral line i did not....all the pictures I've seen of strigata have had just the ocelli and looked just like venezuela aside from that. Interestin...gettin some Aqualogs next week hopefully! Finally found a LFS that will order them in for me! :D YAY!

Aight I was wrong about the strigata. I was able to get a rio tapajos pair of strigata and they are intense in coloration!! And aggression! Totally awesome fish! The reds, yellows and blues on them are gorgeous!! Highly recommend gettin them if you can get the true strigatas!! ;) Finding them is the trick!
