Personally, I'm wondering why anyone so ignorant about fish keeping would even bother with a fish store - according to a post on AC from a fish store owner, this is definitely not the kind of thing you want to be doing unless you realy like fish.

Halo, that is the worst care of lfs mismanagement I have heard about. Should be shut down. If dogs were kept in this manner, there would be fines and it would be shut down.

Isn't this what some of our sponsors do too while fish are on hold? (haven't you seen pics of large rays and catfish in small holding tank only with sponge filters?) Or look at what sort of ordeal the animals in this hobby go through in exporters' facilities.
Blaming local petshops alone is too naive and irresponsible. We who are in the hobby should also think about where we are in perpetuating abuse and neglect in this pet industry. For this reason, I'm frankly turned off by display of tanks on fish forums that are overstock (why do people need to have that many fish from the wild in their possession?). It is not too dissimilar to the effects the wealthiest nations of the world are having on environment and gross socioeconomic injustices due to their overspending and unwillingness to compromise their lifestyles.

That's just sad, wow. And why do you hate Petco? I know it's a store more for noobs, but I don't think it's bad at all.

Petco varies from region to region. There is an overwhelming number of minimum-wage employees that don't really care about fish or buy into the ancient 60's fishkeeping myths. If Petco or any petstore actually offer a bit more salary, then the specialists would be more willing to come out of the woodworks.

Exactly, If MCD's was hiring, they would be there for the "shift meal".
Not the "specialists", but the current employees.

up here in canada we are limited to where and when we can buy fish, seems like most pet stores are pretty poorly managed.

Get off the soap box...
I am sick of people placing the blame for the world's problems solely on the "wealthiest nations" lecture...

Well it sure is a good job that the previous poster didn't "place the blame for the world's problems solely on the wealthiest nations". How about you go back and read the post carefully, perhaps allow some of it to sink in, and then try and post something constructive.

That's a rather broad statement. Irregardless, I've heard many posts about LFS that are poorly managed or staffed by incompetents. Why not bring up one's concerns directly to the store staff/management? Sometimes those in a business lose sight of the end goal of selling: happy customers. They might need to be reminded. It may not satisfy, but at least it gives you a real opportunity to judge the store and its employees with what they do when given, or prompted with, the right information. Dealing directly with the public (particularly in a LFS) can be incredibly draining, and it becomes very easy to overlook why we love it.

What i seem to notice is that most stores go through a lot of people. and there tanks are just as up and down as anyone else on heres tanks would be if the boss man wasnt giving you the money needed for maintaining the tanks and good filtration, water changes. when you look at it from a their side its easyer to buy fish than invest 20 grand into having the right setup. not saying this is right but most "pet stores" not fish stores dont care about the fish, they sell more cheap small fish than they do larger more expensive things that us advanced keepers love. they make their gravy off the "daddy i want a fish" than the DIY guy looking to fill his thousand gallon. most stores have good times and bad it all depends on the day, week, month. I try to hit them all from time to time but have my one true "fish store" that I trust. and even they have crap at times.
