View Full Version : Let's Play the "What Eel Am I?" Game
I recently purchased a Tank that included an Eel. I am trying to identify it and figured this would be the best place.

not sure if I'm on the right track but it looks like the American eel (Anguilla rostrata (http://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=161127)). Similar in looks and description and it is indigenous to N.America so fits geographically. Hope this helps.

Definitely NOT a bichir. It is a 'true' eel as Angel51087 has already noted. Likely one of the Anguilla species though without any sort of locality information it will be difficult to identify as to species.

Thank you all very much, It is indeed an American Eel. I call a LFS to ask about trade in credit and every other reply he said " Do not Release it" After the 4th time of Saying "I know, I was not planning on releasing it I knew better", I replied, "Listen you have convinced me, I'm going to put it in the pond here at my apt complex" and hung up. Relax I will not, I have found a co-worker with a 65 Gal tank who is willing to take him and give him a good home. He is also aware how big they can get and will upgrade tank as needed.
PS I can't wait to get a house so I can get a large tank!!!!

Yeah it's a true eel, cool creatures.
How big do they get?
I was reading one of the Fish and game sites and it stated :Females can get up to 5' long , Males get 2' long.
Hopefully you got a female
