I am in WA state as well, near the beach. I think it would be cool to me up. Maybe we can go tour a shop or something. I know The Trust will go if fish are involved. Where in WA is everybody? I am in Hoquiam.

The TRUST checking in!
Well there are a few ideas of what we can do.
We can do a LFS trip thing but the problem with the Seattle Area is that good decent LFS are spread far and wide, most of the cool ones that carry rare or monster fish are located in Chinatown but aside from that everything else is spread out. I know some of you may be interested in this but for me I will just be happy meeting members. I got to Chinatown almost daily cause I work walking distance from there. Don't expect to see anything too cool. I usually buy my fish from out of state for a reason.
Another option is to do a meet and stop by members places to check out their selection. the same problem comes up....Distance. Most of us live quite some distance from each other. Fishminded lives right by me but people like say Ted lives 30 mins from me and REC lives about ahr 15 mins away. Other members not in the Seattle Area like say Caveman who lives about 3.5 hrs away from me may pose a problem as well.
Another Option that maybe the best idea is to do meet as a fish/collecting expedition. We need to find someplace good to fish. If it is for bass and other warm water fish we can hold the meet in Eastern WA. If it's sometime in the fall we can meet for a Salmon fishing trip (I Have yet to catch one.....I'm so emabrrased). Now for Salmon there are lots of places but I usually drive down to meet with Frank (Caveman) who usually guides me close to the Olympic National forest. The area is beautiful an pristine. Another bonus to this part is that there is a lake there like no other I've seen. Fishing is so so there but what is cool about it is the collecting. Frank and I get excited catching crawdads, newts, freshwater sculpin, and stickle back that are found in this lake.
there are many ideas we can throw out for a meet. I'm open to hear what people think might be a good idea.

Would be cool to do a group order from one the vendors that way we could split the shipping and possibly get a group discount. I'm down for a native fish collecting trip. The Trust is a master crawdad and newt catcher. Oldest man I have ever seen get so damn happy over a newt.

here are some pics when I met up with Frank (Caveman) in 2005. Some pics of the scenery. we were supposed to go salmon fishing but we had a drought that year so water level was next to none :( So we hit the lake and caught all that trout in just over an hour.
Check out Frank holding the fish :D

Well, yes, but I didnt have time to go to Extreme Marine. I tottaly forgot all about it when I went to visit my brother. Although, next thursday I will be going to a mariners game and staying at my brother's in Olympia and I'll probably be able to stop by and look around Extreme Marine. Not sure, but hopefully there will be time.
Maybe we could schedule Extreme Marine to be on of the LFS spots on the Meet?

Well, with my work, it's kind of hit and miss as to whether I'd be able to make it. Would love to if I could. I'm kind of in the middle of the state (Wenatchee), so whether it's Eastern WA (Spokane area) or Western WA (Seattle area), the distance is near the same. So no problems there. hehe

I think between all the guys we are going to have a lot of great input! A fishing trip sounds fun, although, I'd have to get a Washington license too. WA has some great catfishing spots. There is one spot on the snake that right off the road drops to 10-15 feet. Haven't hit it up yet, but I will be this weekend hopefully.

You just don't know where to look. Aquarium solutions, owned by Barbie (one of the big name pleco breeders) has a great selection of odd ball fish, although many are smaller guys. NW seed and pet has a 20" royal clown knife and 20" clown knife. Those two shops are both sub par though if you ask me. Evergreen pet is terrible, but I got a zebra pleco for $40 there last year. If you ever drop by there, ask them about it. :D There is also a shop down in Lewiston, ID, that has big fish regularly. Last month they had a 24" gibbi pleco, and a couple months back they had an 18" achara cat.

Looks alright but he looks low grade (No offense intended). You will get very little for it or nothing. Maybe $20. That what the LFS might give you.
Agaian I don't mean to insult just an opinion. To me FH are over rated for their prices, it really comes down to how much you enjoy the fish no matter the quality or value.
if you want I can try asking around for you if anyone I know might be interested in it.

I will most likely keep him primarily because he is peaceful to tankmates in my 145. That's a rarity with FH's.

Well, first I'd like to see about getting a behind the scenes tour of either of the two major aquariums in the area. I'll talk to those guys over there this week, and see what I can get setup. Other than that, lets get a list of aquarium shops together for the meet that we like, and we can thin it down to a choice few. I personally would like for you guys to hit up Extreme Marine, but they are primarily a SW shop (I worked here for a while, and the guys know SW, and are willing to bring in some great stuff for FW, I'll talk to the owners and see if they would be down with it, and see if they will beef up before the meet). A second choice would be to drop by Aquarium Paradise in Tacoma (they custom build acrylic tanks, and we might be able to check out some of their building stuff) and they have a good selection of both FW and SW stuff.

Also, if we make a stop south in Oly or Tac, then in Tacoma (Near the tacoma mall) there is an 'aro' on display at a shop, along with 7-9 silver aros.

Wow, I can't believe I missed this, Thanks for the PM Chris. Hi, I'm in the Mountains near Cashmere, close to the Columbia River, Lake Chelan, Lake Wenatchee (dodging wildfires) and used to live in Grays Harbor-too weird, so Hi locals saw one in Wenatchee, Hoquiam and Montesano)
I'm late here, but this sounds really neat. Westport can be an awesome, I have had a place there for the past 20 years, usually cold and rainy, but I love it! Eastside now late in the evenings the winds blow warm, the water is warmer. There's good wildlife viewing, Muleys, Bighorn sheep.
The "behind the scenes" look behind the Aquarium sounds just fascinating, I hope something or more than one somethings can be arranged. I'm in.

its funny with aquarium paradise sometimes they have good prices and other times way too high. The last rtc they had he was about .5" and $89 and now they have got a jardini 3-4" $89. not quite sure where they came up with these prices. As far as monsters go they had a 450 gallon sw with a nurse shark and a grouper and I cant remember what the eel was but he was about 5'. They just sold that tank. Now they dont have any monsters at all.

Better late than never, back to the jetty cats, yeah, I have a few descendants living in my house.....jetty cats! ha ha I was going to write a book with many photos of the jetty catz!!!
PS-It's easier to swim, surf out to the end of the jetty as long as the swells are mellow-surfers mecca has claimed many lives-but those tidepools at low tide early dawn are UNREAL-starfish, it's like an aquarium for real.
In the evenings, sit on the Westport docks-low numbered floats down by the end, the seals pop up all over the basin munchin' on Salmon. I came around the dock to board a crabboat in the dark and there was this HUGE male sea lion on the dock, I would have run into him but he went ape **it, we negotiated whether or not I was going to board the boat, it was hysterical.

We're talking about the end of the trail, the rocky jetty, walking all the way out to the end it. Westhaven -where the best surfing is, half moon bay and the Coast Guard Tower are there-the Jetty runs all the way down the reventment then out to the end of the boardwalk where the boats cross the bar-open ocean on one side. It's killed many people, we're adults joking about doing a very dangerous and stupid stunt and please DO NOT EVER try to actually do it unless you are in a wetsuit, with a buddy, surfboard and are darn sure you know what your'e doing. Seriously. I used to work as an EMT for the South Beach Ambulance and we went on some really gory, nasty accidents out there. OK, sorry, I'm done preaching, but it needed to be said.
Let's see what happens and what ends up in the plans-maybe next time I come to the beach I could talk to your Mom with you about MFK and tell her my experience. She has every right to be concerned, and you should be careful. Maybe you could invite a family member to come with you??? Someone they trust?? You're at a tough age for things like this. Sometimes me and my mom go to the trial and she walks while I run. I did the whole 5 miles in 40 minutes once :headbang2 ! Concidentally, the trialhead of what I'm talking about is very near a hotel/restaraunt that has an awesome reef tank close to the entrance.
Yeah, it's still called "The Islander" by locals, not sure of the new name, at the end by the Jetty. I have spent many hours drooling over that reef tank. The guy who cares for it and built it is a good hook up is Forbidden Reef Aquatics in Central Park. He's in US West DEX, has email, think that's his website name too. He keeps that reef tank as well as all the big ones in Ocean Shores, he's excellent at saltwater, very nice guy. I have to look it up. You live right there!!! Good luck
Uhhhh so what's happening in August-Olympia? I was snoozin'....:) :nilly: :grinno:
PS Good run time for that trail!!!

May do that sometime. In a couple weeks, a friend needs to go to Spokane, and I have to take him. If I have time, might stop for a quick visit to Aquarium Solutions before we head back. Then on another weekend, one of the guys I work with and his girlfriend want to go to The Wet Spot in Portland. They offered to pay for the gas if I take them for the day, lol. So for everyone that has fish that they want to request, email me with the name of the fish, scientific and common names please, and a quantity. Sex is not going to be likely on many fish, and size will generally be small juvies, to sub adult. Only email me if you want to get the fish. I will email with an approximate cost 2 weeks before (I will post a message here saying the emails are out for the fish) you will have only 2 days to verify it, if you verify the fish, I will have them try to order it.

The current plan for the day will be to start at Extreme Marine in Oly, and work our way north. I'd like to go to the wet spot, but I don't want to use that much gas. If there is enough interest, and someone is willing to give me a ride, then we can go, otherwise, from oly to seattle, and that will be the day.

We can start at either end of the run, I still haven't heard any feedback as far as Portland/the wet spot is concerned. August 18, 2007 is the definite date. The time is still up in the air.
As far as Extreme Marine goes, they have both FW and SW, but I was their FW guy. I am talking with the guys to have a big stock of monsters there, that are specific to what we want. We shall see what they can do, and if it doesn't work out we start farther north. Aquarium paradise is a nice shop, but overpriced, but there is that asian arowana in tacoma that I'm sure many members haven't seen and want to see.

I'd take it, but I'm just really afraid of my cons harming it. The cons have already killed a T-barb.

Extreme Marine needs you back Wyld! I was there today and this is the (almost) complete list of FW fish they had:
Oscars
Tinfoil barbs
Green terrors
Convicts
Jack Dempseys
Guppies
Mollies
Some tetras or danios of whatever (not monsters whatever they were)
and one very sad looking blackbelt cichlid
The SW section was awesome, but they have better FW at Petco lol. Looking forward to the meet,
Jack

They haven't ordered FW in a while due to the prep for the meet. They want to make sure they have room for everything ordered.

A lot of bio-spira and filter bacteria, and getting it setup fast will help!
