How much would you be willing to spend on a single fish?? I want to know what your personal limits are. Doesnt have to be an exact amount or you dont even have to mention an amount.. say 1/4 of my salary , an amount that would not send my wife packing or something like that...

I'm a poor bastard, so I wouldn't spend much more than $200 on a single fish.

I usually only buy fry or small fish, I love to grow my fish out! So I would say no more then $50.

it all depends on how much spending money I have....

couple weeks ago, I spent $37 on 6 exodons, to use as feeders for my $3 cichlids. Two are still left lol, but they're so shy and terrified I think they might die of stress/starvation if my malawis dont decide to finish them off first.

I'm just a college student though with a part time job, its not like im rolling in cash.

When I get outta college and get a real job, my money will be going towards big BIG tanks (goal is 1 or 2 15-foot-long-tanks) and stock them with cheap fish that are fun to watch-- cichlids, centrarchids and snakeheads.

Asian arrows are lovely to look at, but I'd never buy them for the prices they go at-- I'd rather pick up a couple 240g setups instead. I don't care for rays or flowerhorns or other ugly inbred short-bodied fish freaks.

I would have a limit of $350 now but I am still at school no no proper income. Hopefully when i get a job I will get a 2000G tank which stretches around the outside of a room. It would be recreational of the amazon and I would try to see if zebra plecos would breed in such a large space. I also want to use fish tanks for walls in a house which would be really cool (with a door cut in the tank).

The most I've paid for a single fish is about $1000.
Maddness is taking it's toll on a deal I'm trying to make to import giant tasmanian FW lobsters. I've spent $2800 on the permit process (still not approved). Once approval is made, I have to pay for the permits. Plus, the only source willing to sell these crays is asking $1000/ea for a minimum of 1 male and 2 females (plus shipping/taxes/customs/etc. Add to that the fact that the crays would be juvies with about 8 years before they're breeding size and this deal really can and will add up. It's a lot to contend with but, if it works out I stand a chance to be the sole US provider of a crayfish that reaches an average adult size of 12lbs with records reaching 20lbs.

ive heard of these monsters

one thign ive learned through breedign fish is to go big or not at all , i had the choice to buy buy a 2000 dollar group of zebra plecos (adults 7 females 3 males) and jumped on it versus triple thjat in juvies that dont mature for 3 plus years

usually by the time they grow up interest in them via the public has disapated

id go big and buy 1 male and 2 female adult (probably 50 grand though)start mortgaging ur house homie

Most i've paid is 782 dollars and loose change for my prize lungfish. I like a lot of fish but not enough to dump the majority of my tax return on, normally :D I'm still looking for new critters but nothing big money wise (until i see something i cant live with out). Until that it was 75 bucks for my 25 inch african lung.

Those crays would be very awesome to raise, please share pics and what not when you get them :) I'd love to know more about them from someone's first hand experience. I have a bit of an obsession with crays and crabs (fresh water mostly atm).

What would the life span be on one of those....20 years? just taking a guess compared to the growth rates i've seen in my crays and the late maturity of them.

The most I have ever spent on a fish was a lawn mower and a minibike I got those for a spencer pump shotgun, what it works out to in $, I have no idea. More money I have, more tanks I get. I did spend a few hundred to go fishing for things to put in tanks. Several groups offer catching trips with assistance in getting permits and shipping. I would love to have a large tankful of Amazon fish that I caught myself!

just to bring back a dead thread.. one that i find rather interesting...

i've spent $150 on a 3'' jawfish... i guess the absolute limit would be how much i really like the fish, but DEFINATLY nothing over $1,000* (no snow aros for me :D)

basically a dragon moray is what im taling about... if i ever have a grand to blow (yeah right) then i'd consider one if i had a tank for it

depends on the fish, if it's something a want real bad, that is really rare, or a i haven't seen in the long time, i'd rather not limit myself. But up to this point on a single fish is $850.

previously if i had the cash and wanted it i would buy it whatever the cost, now though i would not even spend £1.
the hobby of keeping fish for me is more of a pain these days but one thing that has got to me recently is the stupid costs people seem to be asking for stuff that were just a fraction of the cost last year.
i know for a fact that the costs they pay have not gone up as much as these people are claiming and i feel that we as fish keepers are being conned.
so i decided to sell all my stuff and will spend it on a nice holiday and some car mods.
so to answer the question last year i would have paid whatever it took, this year i would pay nothing at all.

BushFishRox
04-28-2008, 12:22 PM
the most I would spend on a fish is around $100-$200, I have no problem growing a fish up to get a monster fish rather then paying a absurd monster price...

Haha.....not quite. I'm kinda cheap so I wouldn't go over $30 probably - and if I spent that much I wouldn't let people within 10 feet of my tank in fear something would happen to my precious fish

I spent $180 on a fish once...only to have it die a couple of month later! I was more hurt than pissed though, I'd grown attached to that fish in such a short time. Normally I don't spend more than $30-40 on a single fish.

My current record purchase price is four hundred dollars for a shark that I bought three years ago,the shark is still kicking and I still have the sales receipt.I dont really have a set price limit,it just depends on the fish and the situation, like I couldnt bring myself to pay hundreds of dollars for cichlids and if they were legally obtainable,I wouldnt go crazy with the designer asian arowanas either.

I would have to say in the ballpark of $500. And it would have to be something I just could not live without or just freaking HUGE. But I have yet to find said fish or I would have allreay bought it lol.

On a side note there is only one set of fish that I have ever asked about that I was told the were not for sale that I would like to have and Its about 8 8"+ RBPs at one of my LFS every time I go there I ask them how much and they just tell me they are not for sale. Greanted I have my own I'm growning out now but for awhile I wanted what they had pretty bad

In the $20 range. I might consider up to $70 for something I really want. There are many interesting fish that don't cost a lot of money.

It's not that I can't afford a more expensive fish. I just don't want the worry. I would go crazy if I had a $1,000 fish, worrying that it was going to die on me. I get more enjoyment and relaxation out of less expensive fish. Besides a gulper cat, I can't think of any expensive fish at the moment that would interest me.

The most I've spent so far was $20 for a blue crayfish(I know not a fish.) This was almost 10 years ago and I had to special order.

The most I've spent on a fish was a $8 for an Albino senegal bichir.

lucky guy i bought my silver aro at 5 inches for $60 USD and i payed $110 USD for my clown knife at 12 inches i would say the max amount i will pay for a fish.......opens the wallet if its in there hez comin home:) unless i need food too then it might have to wait....at a LFS waiting can be good exspecially for monsters they gotta pay to feed em so they mark em down pretty quick I've noticed give it a month and they should have dropped price a lil bit but then again it might not be there next time around...right now my LFS has 12 in silver aro for $150 and its lil feelers in front are gone!!!
