Yeah, think it is a congicus, There are more pics of it. I don't think it is a members bichir, just a web picture that has been posted a few times. I have it on my computer too.

under ideal conditions P.e.congicus max out at 36-39 inches.
As for its age theres really no way to tell except to say its old to be that big

PhullTank57
07-25-2007, 1:26 PM
Toyin brought in a whopper size congicus, not too long ago. A little over 2 feet, I think.

A shame that it came in DOA tho... A real big shame. That thing was a beast... check out the teeth on that girl!

owning a tropical gar i would hope i could id one. also that would probably be a world record trop. i have never heard of one reaching that size. they max out in the wild around 3-3.5 feet. usually much smaller in aquaria.

Infblue
07-25-2007, 7:25 PM
i have t gars too...i know what you're saying with the size though. same thing with bichirs...i would say that the congicus in the pic is about 30"+, and those gars look to be about same size....

ThePBM
07-25-2007, 7:37 PM
I think you should take into account that your reference for size is a couple of asian people. We are not known to be the largest of people. Just sayin.

how many people here own a congicus? im hoping my female endlicheri gets a decent size, i remember seeing pictures on some japanese website with some endlicheri endlicheri at around 2'

On the gar issue: very likely a big Tropicus...I still give at least a 10% chance on a Gator though...Hard to say as every photo is fragmented and it is hard to see the fish fully.

wow! that is a huge trop if it is in fact one. he looks to be over 3' to me.

could he have been wild caught at that size or do you think he was a captive bred/raised gar.

Unless you get one very young its impossible to tell while its still alive. On some fish species you can count the rings on their scales (kinda like tree rings)this doesn't apply to most tropical fish. For tropicals you'd have to count

Off the gar topic... and back to the bichir in the fish...

Anyone (I hope yall don't jump on me for sayin this) think it's kind of ugly? Yes, I realize it's absolutely massive and deserves awe and respect solely based on it's size... but how about that coloration (or lack of)? I dno - I know it's a Cong, but the colors just remind me of a drab looking senegal. Do ALL lowerjaw species lose their coloration and stripes when they max out in size?

no i don't think they all of a sudden go all washed out when they reach full size. some of it is probably that the fish wasn't the prettiest when small, but also, that fish must be pretty damn old, and i'm sure they'll lose a little pattern when they get OLD.

Not me, I love it for the size and look, if I wanted pretty colours I'd keep discus or marines. ;)

On the topic of huge bichirs, I stumbled across this collection of pics today: http://imageevent.com/codomo/polypterusendlichericongicus
Amazing looking collection, I'm so jealous! Does anyone know who's they are??

Are these SL sizes?

Because Toyin has 18-20" tegelsi's, but I don't know if he's using SL or TL

Infblue
08-03-2007, 10:23 AM
i think toyin's measurement is TL. reason numbers are different is because of the small number of specimens captured to date, we can only guesstimate and base its size on the largest specimen seen so far. and probably when anne put that list together, the largest was 16.75" +/-
