Hey guys, still new here. This weekend I'm going to pick up a Blue Jack Dempsey. I've kept regular Jack dempseys for about 8 years now, but this is my first Blue one. I've been studying them for awhile now and I know a few of you guys aren't extremely fond of them. (Have to try it anyway)
Anybody, who has kept them before, have any advice? Other than keeping a close eye on water quality.

Their not as agressive as regular dempseys. You can keep them with angel fish.Check out my photo gallery and you will see what i am talking about.

Just don't keep them with anything overly aggressive. i've lost maybe 3 of them over the years so i've had my feel of them. Beautiful fish but in my opinion they are very mellow. i'd try them with geo's, angels, stuff along those lines. And yes watch your water quality. Good luck! they are awesome fish if you can keep them alive. I think i just tried putting them with fish that were too aggresive for them.

I lost one to a baby convict one time. They are good looking when they are young but I've seen alot lose there color with age. I think there more of a crap shoot then anything!

Yeah I'm planning on keeping him by himself for awhile. I've even thought about trying to breed him later on with one the smaller females, but it would take 2 generations of breeding to get More blue dempseys. I haven't decided if I want to fool with it.

feed it small amounts but often. I gave mine frozen brine shrimp every day and flake food.
I would go with something other then frozen brine shrimp. BS looses it's nutrition after 72 hours from hatching. Hikari does inject their foods with nutrients but still I would go for a medium protein pellot diet and snacking with redwigglers. you should chop them into 1 cm bits. You can get them from petsmart or online. Black worms are good too. both contain a high fat content.

Thanks guys. I picked up the fish yesterday. He looks Awesome. He is about 2 1/2 inches. He's eating pellets already. Where can i find the red wigglers. I was going to try frozen blood worms cause thats what my other dempseys like.
I said frozen WALDO! :banhim:

Never mind, I found the red wigglers. Gonna give it a try tonight. For some reason my Jacks won't eat frozen brine shrimp, unless really hungry. They just spit it out. My other fish love it.
good luck Jn. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

They grow to be a bit smaller. They'll max out at about 8".

From What I've read, they tend to grow slower also.
