http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/goodwin9/470%20Tank/DSC_0021_edited-copy.jpg

He was only a couple of inches when I got him two years ago. He's now more than 10" long with feelers of more than a foot. If I could catch him, I would take him out of the tank.

My favorite fish is the Dummsimer tang.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/goodwin9/FISH%20-%20New%20Tank/dussimer.jpg

My favorite coral are the ones that grow well in my tank. I really can't name a favorite. I seem to have a tough time keeping corals flourishing in my tanks.

The filtration for the tank is located in the basement. First picture shows the sump/refugium, skimmer, and to the right, the calcium reactor.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/goodwin9/470%20Tank/Filtrationcorner.jpg

This picture shows the chiller in the corner, the mechanical, chemical and UV canisters, along with the sand filter and phos reactor. Not visible in these picttures are the two Blueline return pumps hidden the the equipment. The 55 gallon storage tank is for top offs in the system.

Sorry if this is a second copy. I don't see my original question so I am asking again.

What are the dimensions of your 470?
Is it plexi?
The corners look unusual. Are those bent corners?
What thickness is your glass/plexi?

Really nice tank. Gorgeous! I bet setting it up was a heck of a lot of fun.

Not trying to cause trouble or anything but Ive bot a few questions. Your convict tang looks kinda emaciated but they are a difficult species to maintain how much luck are you having with him? Also does your spiney bother any of your other inhabitants? Fish, corals, inverts, etc.? Ive known lots of people who have had trouble with them.

Amazing tank.
The last time I kept marine fish was about 10 years ago. I had an all glass tank held together with silicone. Looking at your picture, there appears to be no silicone. How long have these tanks been available? I'm assuming its made from acrylic. If so, is it a single shape (no joins) and how thick? does scratch easliy?

Jawdropping photos - it looks beautiful.

Speaking as a divemaster with PADI, I can say I've been to reefs that don't look anywhere nice as your tank.

After keeping freshwater fish, I only started my marine tank this year. I can only hope to emulate your tank - it's incredible!

I would never add one to another one of my tanks. While cute when they are small, they will eventually grow very large and cause problems. (At least mine did.) Mine moved rocks and ate some of the corals, snails and crabs. They seem to be an eating machine.

I feed the Shark & Ray frozen krill and silversides. I'll some times skip a day. They are eating machines that will eat all you feed them. A cheaper tank to feed than my others, it does require a pretty good filtratioin setup to keep the water quality in check.

i know feeding a shark a few fish or shrimp etc a day is not bad compared to a tank full of freshwater rays, who eat more than that twice a day.

He was only a couple of inches when I got him two years ago. He's now more than 10" long with feelers of more than a foot. If I could catch him, I would take him out of the tank.

My favorite fish is the Dummsimer tang.

I was thinking about building a plywood tank for a reef and want to make it as easy as possible to maintain so I was wondering what you would want to do (or did) that would make it as easy as possible to maintainIf I could do it over again, I would try and find a better way to hang the lights inside the canopy. The 3 400 watt MH's need to be moved to clean the sides of the tank, and the fixtures behind the MH's are almost impossible to change the bulbs. What I do like about this particular tank is the fact that all of the filtration, pumps, ect are located in the basement. Easy to get to and work on. With my other tanks, all of the support equipment is located under the stands which makes for cramped quarters and more difficult to work and clean.

puffcrusader696

Sweet :D you could mount the halides on light tracks and move them to one side when cleaning and to the other side when cleaning that side... that's what I plan on doing when I get a bigger tank.

marine_hawaii
06-10-2009, 5:23 PM
The filtration for the tank is located in the basement. First picture shows the sump/refugium, skimmer, and to the right, the calcium reactor.

This picture shows the chiller in the corner, the mechanical, chemical and UV canisters, along with the sand filter and phos reactor. Not visible in these picttures are the two Blueline return pumps hidden the the equipment. The 55 gallon storage tank is for top offs in the system.

How about adding a kitchen sink to your tank room? Seriously thou, seems like a bit of overkill on the filtration side.

I'd definitely nix the sand filter and UV canisters. Not sure what you have for mechanical and chemical, but probably not necessary either.

The setup I would recommend is the one used by the Waikiki Aquarium. Basically, a protein skimmer (small is fine, I prefer ETS, they use Tunze & custom), a kalkwasser freshwater topoff (using Reverse Osmosis water), good live rock and strong lighting.

That's the most basic setup. I'd add to that a refugia with a Deep sand filter, and a surge device.

So pricing it out for a 200 gal tank:

protein skimmer $200
Reverse Osmosis $200
Kalkwasser mixer $50 (using a plastic tub, timer, solonoid and a power head)
live rock $$$ (depends on a lot of things)
lighting $$$ (also varies too much to put a price on).

Refugia - $30 for plastic tub and 2" PVC fittings. The price of sand is too variable to put in here.
Surge device - $50 (plastic tub, pvc and a powerhead)(timer optional).
Deep-sand bed $50 (a refugia is a good place to put that)

There will be a couple hundred bucks in various things that you don't think of like PVC fittings and additional hardware.

I've omitted the cost of the tank, stand, etc as that's the same whether it's salt or fresh.

My point is that there is no reason to go overboard with equipment for a reef tank. You can get a beautiful tank without putting money into a lot of extra equipment.

I would say it's comparable to a freshwater planted aquarium. The cool think is that if you build the tank and lot of the equipment yourself, and then put the $$$ into lighting and liverock.

...

When planning a reef tank, the most important aspect is that you keep it well balanced. You can't have a heavy fish load and expect the fish or inverts to do well. You can have a large number of corals if you have good lighting and good water quality (and only a few fish).

Tangs/surgeon fish are best as they can support themselves by eating algae. I try to keep feedings down to once a week, so fish that can't find their own food in the tank wouldn't do very well.

Three of the below pics are from a 200 gal reef tank at Waikiki Aquarium. Sorry the pics are so bad, all are from a movie I shot of that tank.

The first pic is of the "kalkwasser" mixer/adder. Second one is the Tunze protein skimmer. The last is a nice soft coral. Sorry all this pics are screen shots taken from a movie I took of the tank.

The 3 larger photos are just some corals from their other tanks.

You might want to do some research on the "berlin method" or "Jaubert method" and strip down one of your smaller tanks to test out how it works for you.

As a note to anyone else looking to set up a reef tank, I suggest you do some reading/research on those two methods. Your main expense will be the lighting and liverock. A lot of the equipment for either method you can build yourself. So price wise, it does not need to get ridiculous (well no more so than a comparably-sized fresh water tank).

I'll post some photos of the results of these methods.

I received a couple of new fish yesterday. They won't be going in the 470, but I thought that I would post a couple of pictures of them here. They are a pair of Platinum clowns from ORA.

From what I've read this method is just rock and Cal. or Kalk reactor, with the addition of a skimmer..
This is the method I use...
A skimmer and a klak reactor...and water changes..You might want to do some research on the "berlin method" or "Jaubert method" and strip down one of your smaller tanks to test out how it works for you.

From what I've read this method is just rock and Cal. or Kalk reactor...

Yea, that's basically it. It's a pretty simple method.

My feeling is that a Calcium Reactor is NOT the way to go. An inch or two of live sand will automatically give you the same benefits without the cost of the Calc Reactor, or having to "dial it in".

A deep sand filter in a refugia between the sump and the return is, in my opinion, another great idea. Simple, effective, good benefits all around. You can also put a light over the refugia and have it on during the evening hours for additional pH buffering.

I'd say if you want a really simple setup, just liverock, livesand and a protein skimmer are all that's needed. I've used that combination innumerable times and it works beyond expectations. Coral growth is basically limited by the amount of light.

Only do water top offs with Reverse Osmosis water. Only use kalkwasser (calcium water) if you are using an automated system.

Need to keep the fish load down too!

The Pearl Eye Bicinctus clowns seem to be developing streamers.
