Well, lets see what everyone has or has kept in the past. I'll start things off. :D
Right now I've got three South American lungfish, 3 senegal bichirs, 1 ornate, 1 delhezi, 1 palmas polli, 1 shortnose gar, and the only remenant of my knife collection, my BGK. In the past I've kept endli bichirs, lap bichirs, congicus bichirs, palmas buettikoferi, and I think that's it for my bichirs, lol. And for a few years I had quite a few knives, thermomter knives, carapos, ossas, mottled, a "dragon" knife, and a few others. :)

I have very little experince with "Jurassic" fish but I have kept a few Bichirs and a couple Arowanas. At this time I am currently keeping no Jurassic fish.

I kept a senegal bichir for a few months a while back, till he jumped out on me. He was a great little guy to watch, I had him in a 200g with a bunch of cichlids. Very active creature, zipped all around that huge tank like he was on a perpetual caffeine high.

whats the definition of a jurassic fish? does it have to have some direct ancestral relationship to a jurassic aged fossil or just something bony and ancient looking?

The TRUST
03-31-2005, 4:38 PM
Hmmmm I'd say something like the fishes mentioned in the TFH Jurassic fish book.

piranha45
03-31-2005, 6:24 PM
I'd speculate anything that's NOT in super order Teleostei (Modern Bony Fish) would be fair game.

So that would make bichirs, sturgeons, bowfin, lungfish, coelocanths, and other such fish discussable in this forum/thread.

First of all I would like to say that I am new to this forum and like it very much! I seen the ad in TFH and tried the link before but all it said was the logo and that was it! Anyway I'm finally here and am a Monster Fish Keeper!!
Right now I own a P.lapredi , Silver arowana , Loma Shovelnose and a 21 inch Fire eel and a Trinadad pleco.
I'm not sure if the eel is a "jurassic" fish or not but looks like it could be.
I have many other fish but those are the ones I'd consider ancient.

wow... awsome spec! got pix to show us.. i want to see your filter setup...

johnptc
04-21-2005, 11:21 AM
down with a cold... but pics will be coming....

filter setup:

mechcanical:
4 3 inch diam overflows from tank to open filter box ( 175 gallons) where the water runs thru a long series of mechcanical filter media and dumps into a 400 gallon sump. Sump has three separate 4000 watt heaters and controllers. The water is then pumped up, by a 3/4 hp march pump ( 55 gpm), to the UV sterilzer and drops thru two parallel barrels with bio balls and flows back to the tank. The bio balls provide degassing and bio filtration.

From time to time I run a 7inch dia x 30 bag filter to polish the water. The bag ratings run from 100 micron to 1 micron. Intial flow is about 60 gpm and bag change when pressure get to about 7psi. This really cleans up the water as the main filter only goes to about 100 micron. The main filter was finer but it needed cleaning everyday....now its about every 10 days...just rinse the media out and put it back.

anyway thats the basics....i will get some pics online.

bio filtration

From the sump water is pumped continously ( approx 2000 gph) to an overhead barrel filled with bio bale and bio balls. When the barrel is full it siphons itself empty back to the sump and cycle repeats.... also at about 500gph sump water is run thru charcoal ( 7 lbs).

I think I found out what was given to me as a "marbled sleeper" a south american wolf fish, does not have the wattles but size and temperment match. Does anybody know anything about these ugly *****?

piranha45
04-23-2005, 1:52 AM
theyre very similar to big sleepers in most respects; big (well, some species are only 8", but others can get 4 feet) inactive ambush predators. They have formidable teeth. The common wolf H. malabricus is the most widely available specie, it gets about 20" and is pictured below.

the two fish in these pics were both about 10" at the time.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/uploads/20/wolf_fish_eats_snakehead_2.jpg

they look cool, but like gobies their inactivity deters me from ever wanting to keep them, myself

here's the largest specie
