View Full Version : List your predatory catfishes!

I'll stop making "List your -------!" threads after this, but lets see what sorts of predatory catfishes other members here have. Again, I'll start things off :D :
Right now I've only got a small jurenese and two RTC... in the past I've kept loads of South American cats, mainly Pimelodids... but a few odd cat families here and there such as candiru, eel cats, synos, and African "poison slime" cats. :)

I had a nice 5" spotted pictus, it was 2 yrs old. I fried him just this past Sunday due to personal negligence :(

Then I attempted to cut him up but... man, once I opened his guts up, a nasty fishy reek started to pervade the room. I got a good look at his mouth though; seems them pimelodids have a distinctly-shaped scrubby pad thing (like really fine sandpaper) on each jaw and that's it; no real teeth.

i stuck some driftwood in my 150 that i had found . It looked freeaking awsom let me tell ya. But it landed up leachin out some chemicals in the watter and the channel sufferd the worse. I thought the channel was gonna survive and my tsn red tail hybrid was gonna die. I was wrong it was opposit way around. Guess i should have spent as much time nurseing the channel back like i did the red tail tsn hybrid huh. But i was more attached to the hybrid so i worried more about him. And it looked like the channel was makeing a good recovery. The channel died next day.

lophius, what's your estimate on the wels' prospective growth rate?

lophius
04-07-2005, 6:29 AM
failry quickly - but it depends on food availability - I kept one for 8 years - got it at 3" and grew it to 3ft (or there abouts) in about 3 years and then stopped it (or considerably slowed it down) ..

You have a Wels? Cool!!! The record on those things is 13'+, how big is yours, where did you get it, and what temp. do you keep it at? I had tiny one in 74 that I was given while in Germany, It was in an unheated 35g show tank and went from 3" to 10" in a year. I gave it to the USO club when I got transfered, they had an empty tank that was 3'x3'x6'. Has anyone kept Missourri Flathead cats? I did as a kid but had to keep switching them out when they hit about 6", my tank was only a 20.

Most carnivorous cat I ever kept was a small brown bullhead, at 3" he would bully goldfish his own size until they died and then chew on them until I remove the corpse. My mom made me get rid of it, what can I say, I was 8.
