never heard of a paroon x rtc, but i have a perruno x rtc. it's a great looking fish, somewhat playful, and eats like a pig.

what... paroon x rtc ?!? never heard of that

Fishes33
08-11-2007, 2:19 PM
How can you cross breed a paroon and rtc? rtc in the bottom, paroon on the top, its like saying Arowana x Polysterus :nilly:

AwolAngler
08-11-2007, 3:02 PM
ya I've NEVER heard of this either... are you sure it's not a rtc x perruno?

grmanrocks
08-11-2007, 3:46 PM
im positive, its not a redtail x purruno

they are redtail shaped but that black solid siverly parron color. with the little black edged fins. they are at a LFS near me that almost lways has redtail hybrids.

i got a REALLY bad pic..... so here it is.

wuttya think?

GRmanrocks, post a better pic pls.

frm that pic, it seems a litle like a Paroon Shark (coloration, body shaping)

kntrygrl4lyfe
08-11-2007, 11:48 PM
I dont think it looks like a parron at all, the face of it reminds me of a little rtc, nd the tail from what I can see reminds me of my little channel cats tail..... cute from what I can see lol

if these are around I need one. I love my hybrids.

grmanrocks
08-11-2007, 11:50 PM
ill go get a better pic soon, i apologize for nthe horrible quiality. if you have seen me other pics they are BILLIONS of times better. i just didnt have my real camera with me.

i guess its odd to hear of something like this then? what else could give a red tailed cat that color? cuz its a redtailed body for sure. would it even be POSSIBLE for a redtail and parron to hybridize? wouldnt the perspective hybrid couple have to be from the same class at least? in thi case pimiodela?

im just confused..............

kntrygrl4lyfe

Im going to have to agree with jtrotter, I might want to try one of them myself.

It's possible. Look at what the hybrid breeders have already done. I mean tsn x niger??? I never thought that one would be possible. So now I can believe anything. The pysiology of a tsn and a niger don't even remotely match up. Not to mention they are in totally seperate families. So I for one think this one is possible. maybe it's not what he thinks it is but I give the benifit of the doubt. I've been proved wrong on the tsn x nigers so I'll sit back and wait this one out. Need better pics for real. I'd buy it and if it's what you say it is and can't house it then sale it to me!!!! lol

its on chatsworth and whiteoak (dont know the adress) if your coming from valencia, basically take the 118 freeway to balboa, make a left on balboa, make a right at chatsworth, and keep going till you see FUMIS tropical fish, on the lefthand side. Its next to an enterprise car rental place.

Hole in the wall shop, but the guy adam is a good guy, he hooks it up.

i figure he could be fine with my big fellas till about 14"s or so in the current tank, but this November im gonna end up upgrading to a 195 wide. so that gives him more time/ don't know how fast that will be, but i can hold on to him till spring in sure, or if he REALLY grows fast, he might be ready to leave by fall....who knows....but i don't really plan on power feeding the little guy

Here is a pic of the hybrid, for sale in Japan. There is more info under the pic towards the bottom.

http://aqua-bonito.web.infoseek.co.jp/HOME/HOME.html

Talk about your ultimate food source for aquaculture combining one of the largest south american catfish with the largest asian catfish species. If the hybrid isn't fragile (and I assume it isn't based on other catfish hybridizations I've seen) it will be a good food staple if used for that. ~Trent

It's been a few hours now and I've already seen some interesting behavior.

This fish can't seem to choose between behaving like a Pangasiidae or a Pimelodidae

I know it's still acclimating to the tank, but sometimes it hides behind the powerheads resting on the sand, then other times it's trying to swim non stop, while hiding behind the intake tube just below the surface of the water.

There was an appx 6" line of pellets at the water line right before lights out, a few minutes later (after the PRTC did a skim of the entire tank) the pellets were gone and it is a very very fat and happy fish.

At the LFS, some were resting on a sponge filter in the tank, and others were swimming around the water column in a frenzy. Luckily, the employee swooped one of the active ones! :D

More pics tomorrow. ;)

Can someone with a scientific/marine biologist/biologist background please confirm if this hybrid is even possible.

Just because someone in the LFS decided to call it a Paroon/RTC Hybrid doesn't make it so.

The two fish are not even remotely related.
They are not even from the same continent.
Hybridisation only occurs where the species are closely related.

Can we take a step back here and ask ourselves "Is this possible?".

I've spoken to a marine biologist on another forum whom I know for many years, he says it is certainly not possible. The picture could be one of many many juvenile catfish in the hobby.

Am I the only one who is sceptical here?

C'mon please, surely you dont think this is a natural hybrid? if you have been in fishkeeping any length of time you will know man cant leave things alone and try to create man made freaks all the time, some people just love playing god, and hope to make a lot of money out of it.:(

If by natural hybrid you mean that these two species have bred together without any intervention, of course I don't think that.

Natural Hybrid/Man Made hybrid, it still doesn't change the fact that the two species are not even near alike biologically to hybridise.

Regardless of whether it was done in a lab or not I don't think it is possible.

Man I can estimate that those things will grow anywhere from 100cm - 150cm easily. And its a high possibility that it will be even more than that.

I'd say the ultimate catfish hybrid would be Piraiba x Mekong Giant Catfish. Imagine a full grown one...
