i think the pictures too blur to determin, but the top birchir can't be senagalus... they don't get anywhere near that size.

:screwy: :hitting: :newbie: Then its one huge snegalus.

not everything goes according to what books say.

Books say the carapo knife fish maximum length is 12inches. Yet i have seen at least 2 specimens of 14 inches already.

Can anyone confirm the maximum size of any animal?

its that simple. Furthermore, one very simple thing.... water magnifies everything.

truman
05-10-2005, 12:04 PM
true about the water thing...

I don't know, books really can be inaccurate, that's why they are updated from time to time with more valid data.

My Campbelli community is getting along more or less okay, books/websites say they are agressive. Guess it is based on the observer and the writer's observations.

yea well 2 inches is different then 2.5 feet (largest senegaul ive seen with my own eyes is 10 maybe 12in)

no way in gods hell that this bichir is a senegaul , maybe it was bought as a senegaul?

The big Polypterus in the first pic if definitely not P. Sengalus. They don't get that big and the head is all wrong too. IMO I think that is a P. endlicheri Endlicheri. It might be P. Endlicheri Congicus but most congicus I have seen are just long and not thick. So I am leaning towards P. endlicheri Endlicheri with this one having less markings that usual.

Non stop feeders. If you want fish to grow fast. it's always non stop feeders. In all the MFk books I seen, most of the Endlicheri keepers feed feeders

I must have taken some stupid pills today. I what I meant was I think that the big Polypterus is P. Endlicheri Congicus and not P. endlicheri endlicheri. Since it doesn't have any markings. It looks like the ones shown in the Jurassic Fish book.

Whi;e on the subject of giant birchirs, Could it be Birchir birchir in that picture?

Then again, birchir birchir has definatel stripes down its body, so unless its an extremely pale individual.

Jack, that link doesn't work for me. :(

Yeah, that guy was a great endy, but it kept eating all my fish. Now that I have more tanks, I have 5 endlicheri ranging from 11 to 14 inches. None are as active as my/your old one though.

Infact, most endlihceri are calm, active endlicheri is rare. It's nice to see it cruising around. It's too bad you have to let go it.

Doesn't it seem obvious how to determine what species that huge bicir is? Although books can be wrong wouldn't it make more sense to refer back to scientific publications rather than going by word-of-mouth? Im sure we all have experienced blatant labiling errors by LFS's. Is it hard to believe that the owner might just take their word for it? We're fairly experienced fish keepers right? We should know where to find the information we need. Im not trying to rip on anyone but it bothers me that so many would settle for word-of-mouth when we could just make an educated descision for ourselves. So that is where the :wall: comes in. But hey don't listen to me I like fish all my friends say look like lazy sausages.

If u r referring to first pic in#1, well , it shd be endlicheri, might be a endlicheri congicus, reasons being:
1) size, senegal dont have this size, congicus can go up to 39"
2)lower jaw, only endlicheri sp, p endlicheri endlicheri or p endlicheri congicus have this type of jaw( lower jaw more prominent)

What do u think?

Im leaning towards congicus becuase of the absense of stripes. I've never seen pictures of e. endlicheris lacking those stripes. Then again Ive never seen one that big, Im tempted to say that that picture could be doctor'd (I hope not). I was looking through the Polypterus Aqualog book and saw a huge 24" bichir with stripes, that they were calling a congicus and not endli like I thought it was. So as long as we got the right sub species and not a mutant freak senagal I can live with that.

truman
05-18-2005, 3:01 AM
Pardon my ignorance

But isn't P. bichir bichr capable of 120cm/40+ inches

The head structure alone might classify it towards the family of bichirs with large heads and underslung lowerjaws.

I am quite sure that P bichir bichir is capable of that cream colour.
