The last time that JD7.62 was in Indy, he brought me a leucistic Chinese algae eater. Just wondering if anyone else on here has seen one of these?

Any pics?:) I've never seen one I think.

They are actually very common - people usually just walk right past them.

What's the difference between a CAE and a leucistic Chinese algae eater?

Leucistic is white. I've seen tons of golds, but never a white one.

Hard to tell if they are white or not...kind of look like that have a pink hue to them. The one I have is pure white, with black eyes.

JDman, can you get any pics of him?

Santoury, I wouldnt say that they are common. I work at a LFS and get a few dozen a week and this is the first Ive seen.

They are white - they are common if you look high and low, but you're right, they are often missed.

I will see what I can do tomorrow night...he really knows how to hide. I think that he has already doubled in size in the last 2 weeks.

Has anyone else ever seen one of these?

I'd be interested to hear, too.

Having to look "high and low" for a common fish doesnt make since to me.

I wouldnt say that they are the rarest fish out there, but uncommon....sure.

He did have alot of algae to eat in that tank if I remember correctly!

What I meant by high and low is, only a FEW lfs carry the gold ones in any quantity, and the white ones sneak in, hence the "search" But the fact they pop up in those shipments makes me think they're plentiful, but we just don't see them.

Interpretation: I don't know.

Weird no one else is chiming in for such a common fish!

Bret, get that pic up if ya can in the photo lounge and perhaps you could get more responses there.

That's kind of what I am thinking too...only one person so far.

I will try and get some pics of the elusive leucistic CAE.

I tried to get some pics and they just didn't turn out with his true color (or lack of color). I will have to try and catch him to get some decent shots.

The flash is going to kill the color. When he was in our brightly lit planted tank at work the lights were so bright you could actually see his blood giving him a pink hue. In a different tank....well you know how he is.

I keep my 3 (or 4?) in a shallow fountain type pool outside and they show up like nothing else. Bright white lines streaking all over

JD7.62
08-16-2007, 10:07 PM
Santoury, this guy doesnt have lines.

He is pure snow white.

santoury

You must have misunderstood me...

I was creating an image - Looking down into the pond, the fish themselves look like white lines streaming around.

So, I guess the summary is...they are very easy to find if you look really hard.

santoury
08-17-2007, 3:48 PM
Yeah, that's basically what I was saying... Funny how these things are sometimes.

santoury
08-17-2007, 3:49 PM
Piebald ones are also very easy to come by

JD7.62
08-17-2007, 3:53 PM
Ive seen serveral piebald ones. In fact one came in this week. Ive only seen one snow white one though.

santoury

My 3 or 4 are snow white - did you say you had one too?
