I would guess just based on size it is a temensis but it is lacking some markings?

I believe that the black speckles on the gill give it away as a temensis. I have seen larger specimens of temensis that lose the three black bars and all of the lighter spots on the body, especially large colorful ones like this one.

Yes, it's a temensis---well at least for now. There are a few people working on some new Cichla taxonomy. Perhaps we'll see this as a new species down the road here. Does anyone know where the fish was caught at??

Interesting. Brian, I'll try to scan a pic for you I found in a fishing catalog the Cichla pictured looks nothing like I've ever seen before

Tyranocichla

OK. Keep in mind that coloration is largely related to mineral and chemical properties of the water as well as dietary. Also, don't forget that all Cichla are highly, highly variable fishes and there is considerable variation in specimens from just one locality---let alone from several localities. In the end, a picture is nice but I would need the actual fish in front of me to really tell you what it is (or what it isn't).

Yea I was thinking the same thing too about the color. I am guessing that "Fogo" is a color variant of another peacock.

Orinocensis variant maybe???? They have those circle markings on the body.

Also do you think that Cichla naturaly hybridize in the wild??

Tyranocichla
10-25-2005, 2:35 PM
Yes, there is some indication that Cichla will naturally hybridize--probably if other, suitable mates are not present.

Regarding the fogos, who the heck knows what they are. They're not orinocensis-types though....too far apart geographically.

The TRUST

Ah Geography. I don't pay attention to the maps. When I see the fish I forget everything else. LOL

would be interesting to purposely hybridize cichla in the home aquarium just to see what you'll get :)

Like NARC's old Ocelaris and Monoculus pair that spawned

It's easy to do. Get a male mono and a female butterfly and you got it. Or the other way around. Dr. Axelrod hybridized temensis and ocellaris, which were actually orinocensis, and they grew up mostly looking like temensis. FYI.

The TRUST

You're older than me by a year. LOL!

Yeah well by now the fry must be all over the place with them being bred in captivity I am sure they are people that have the decendants of those fish. Now if only we could track them down.....lol

I know....I'm nuts. I've completely lost it.:screwy:

The TRUST

Yeah but it's like saying "I GOT DECENDANTS OF AXELRODS ORIGINAL HYBRIDS" sort of thing. LOL

U know Now I think about it, rememeber that conversation we had over the FL peacocks??? U think they were mixed in with the batch to be released???

Hmmmmm..... could be. that would explain the speckles

Florida's Cichla are hybrids between C. ocellaris from Guyana and C. monoculus from eastern Brazil.

As for Axelrod's Cichla, who cares?

The background of the picture looks like Lake Guri where I fished in 1987.I was tould by our engilsh speaking guide that when the dam was build and the farms that had ponds, they held both species of p.bass and they have cross breed.

Yes, I have heard this before. When the crossbreed the young will look like temensis for quite some time. As they grow, thy begin to look like an ugly combination of both and very very very highly variable. Lake Guri has some of the nicest C. temensis that I have ever seen. Venezuela's finest IMHO.

I'll look to see if I can find where that picture was taken. I think it's for a fishing guide or trip or something. I have seen ony 2 or 3 pictures of P Bass that look like this, they were all huge like that. Wonder if teminisis or hybreed loose the bars when they get huge like that. Mine got up to about 18 to 20 inches or so and didn't loose it's thick black bars on it's body, it did have a big eye spot on it's tail though.

I dunno....
