Just a few words on my polys...
Got myself a decent collection so far, at least considering the unavailability of polys here in iceland.
But i just picked up:
2 palmas polli, around 10" and fat
1 ornatepinnis, 3" tiny
2 ropefish, around 12"
before i had:
3 senegalus, one is ~8" and the other two are ~6"
I am taking a chance with the tiny ornatepinnis but i wanted it so bad i have to try. My other fish are pretty calm so my hopes are high that he doesnt get eaten. It has its own hiding place in the floating plants.
I know there is a big size diffrence between the species but i just took what came available. Normally there are just Senegals available here but one store just ordered 4 palmas and 4 ornate. As you can see by that, the market here isnt that big.
I took two Palmas P. as one had been sold and one had jumped out and died in the store.
I only took one Ornatepinnis cause it was for ~150$ and i dont want to lose more that ones worth if they would get eaten.
The next one on my list is a Delhezi and then i think i have all the poly species i can order.
Some pics:

They will all move to a 200G tank next week.. My 50G is on overload! :(

I had a little accident with the Ornate 2 months ago...
I was doing the regular water change and letting the water run out of the tank through a garden hose...
Suddenly the water stopped flowing, I thought it had just filled with air so i took it to a sink and blasted (cold) water through the hose to fill the hose and get it running again, but nothing!
I finally figured there must be a plant or something clogging the hose so i took the hose connector (the one i connect to the sink to let water run back in after i let it run out...) off the end and found my tiny Ornate trapped inside. :(
It was lifeless, but i got him out, had to brake a dorsal spine doing it.
The result:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=40084 (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=40084)
I thougt it was dead for sure, but after holding it in the water for a few minutes he started twisting around, took a video of the poor thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qJjhKl05wY
After a few days he got better and started swimming normally, and just now the broken dorsal spine seems to have straightened out. :)

the ropes are 12-13" and the biggest poly´s are ~ 10"

Hi Andri,
your pics are beautiful ... the last ones are really disturbing! Didn't the ornate get any problems with that heavy meal?
Your bichirs are well-conditioned - your tank is amazing! Do you think the dark substrate do have any positive effect to the bichir's coloration? I'm keeping mine the same way and do think so ...
Greetings
Uwe
Andri Pogo
01-29-2008, 5:46 PM
yes i think so too! my Polli´s came from a light substrate tank and were much lighter when i got them because of that.
I was lucky with the Ornate, when i opened the tank lid to get him he got spooked and spit the pleco out. I was worried it was stuck.

got 3 more polypterus today :D:D
the best part... for free.
3 10" healthy Palmas polli, 2 males and 1 female. now i have 6 polli´s, 3 males and 3 females.
The new female is the fattest poly i have seen, she literally rolls on her belly, full of eggs maybe?
I sure hope so since the male i had is really frisky hehe, is already checking the new girl out.
Have to get better pics of the big girl swimming, these pics do her no justice!

Hello Andri
I was thinking of getting an ornate but I keep only lower jaw species like you do, plus I have a rope fish and a tire track eel. Do you think that the ornate could cause some problems when he gets big.
Did you think about that? Have you had any problems with the ornate?

Go bigger than a 55 get a 120 or 125 at least because, they tend to be very addictive after you get 2 bichir.

I think a 75 is minimum for a ply tank. Its 18 inches wide so you can get almost all of the lower jaws with ease, and even an ornate for a long time.

yeah it looks like i like the polys the most :D i have been getting rid of the cichlids slowly, thinking of removing all cichlids and going for pretty planted poly tank with only 3 other fish: the ATF, Clown knife & BlackGhostKnife.
but to answer your question, no i dont think my tank is overstocked :)

Ive had a few requests to see more of my "black" Ornatipinnis, so i snapped a few of him yesterday (and a few more of course :D).

He had a little accident when he was smaller, got stuck in a hose, broke and bent a few fins... Ever since, he has been growing pretty slow, and there seems to be some problem with his digestion, it looks like his food gets stuck in the front and it takes days to wear out...
You can see here how dark he is compared to the other Ornatipinnis in the picture, and also how huge his belly gets:

The biggest Ornatipinnis is now 13,5" and growing steadily:
