i am thinking about geting a pike cichlid to put in my bichir tank.
would it be a good idea or a bad idea to do that (my bichirs are about 12" but i do have a few young bichirs that are about 5")?

It could work...but pikes can be anal..get one thats about 4"...should work hopefully. Bichir might not even get noticed. Get Crenicichla sveni or another type of Saxatilis pike..they are 'less' aggressive generally than the Lugubris pikes..plus stay smaller...;)

I had a few Pikes in my day, and believe me they can be some real mean Bugers to fish that are the same size or smaller. I had an 6" orange pike and it devoured a redtail cat that was the same size. However if you keep your fish fed well, and you do not over crowd the tank you should be fine. hiding places are important also. provide alot of them, it will help cut down on the fights in the tank. If you do decide to go this route good luck.

i just got my pike :D , i have tons of hiding spots for him/her.
i got a real good deal on him too, just because the dude who was working at the store was an idiot, he charged me 6.99 for it because he thought it was a fire mouth.
i will post some pics in a few min (have to get some bats for the camera)
