Convicts. Buy a pair, have them put in one bag, drive home slowly and you will be on your way to being overrun with fry.

Too easy. Females have orange on thier stomach, males do not.

Forget about the orange on thier fins, its variers from fish to fish. Just look for the orange.

Best to buy 6 and wait for them to pair rather than buying 2 and hopeing that they pair. Females can sometimes absolutely not have orange on the sides so it can be sometimes tricky. Right now my pink female has no hint of orange, but she is with fry so that. Orange means ready for breeding usually. The brighter the orange the more ready she is. Males can be kind of aggressive especially if the female isn't ready to breed. Often times he will kill her if you do not give her somewhere to hide.

Females have orange regardless of breeding. Only in rare cases do they not have any orange on thier sides. Do not buy 6, a pair will do. Convicts are the easiest spawners, so why buy 6 when you know they'll breed regardless.

Fins can only tell you something about the gender when you have a very keen eye, and lots of knowledge about it. Even then, it's not very fullproof. If there's a couple specks of orange on the BELLY, it's almost surely a female (99.8% chance it's a female). I've never seen a place carry Convicts without carrying females. Most people think Females are the prettier ones, so I'm sure there were some in that tank. And really, if everything else fails, give into Pet Smart. Mine always has Convicts in stock. And believe it or not, some are actually pretty good. I've wanted to get a male there that I've been eyeing, but I can't house him, and I'm already trying to get rid of my Convicts.

dont get cons.even though they are one of the easiest to breed,i would go with jack dempseys.very prolific, and extremely beautiful.its not as easy to tell them apart but you would be much happier with them instead of cons.i actually have both, and suprisingly, the jds mate more often than the cons, with bigger batches.the jds are just as protective as the cons, but with more muscle to back them up too.

But I think he's planning to use a 20g tank, which wouldn't be enough for a single JD, let alone a breeding pair.

Near me , cons arent seen very often, and if they are they're roughly $5 for a 2" con. Im sure I could supply the market with a steady source of convicts but most shops dont like them because they're a nucence.

Then you're likely not going to sell them for credit. I managed to get really lucky and sold 100 of my fry for 25 cents each, so I got $25 in-store credit. And I consider that really good. If you want alot of store credit, breed Discus or some kind of Apisto. Or Celestial Pearl Danios (AKA. Galaxy Rasboras). You can almost buy a new tank on a batch of Discus at my LFS.

I just bought a pair yesterday from my lfs. They had a tank of pink and regular ones selling for $1.99. Luckily freshwater fishies were half off yesterday, so we got them for a buck lol. The two are playing around in a 15 gallon tank now. Neither is really special looking, but they're just food makers to us lol. I had to use a flashlight to find my female's orange spots lol. Hopefully their fry will make good food for our new Bolivian Rams and all our other little guys.
