Hi! I'm Roy from Norway, and I am new to this forum.
I registered because I'm very interested in odd and unusual fish, and to my surprise I discovered a thread about ponds...

So naturally I must put out a picture of my own pond :D

Great pond! And welcome to MFK I am hoping to have a pond and if it looks anything as good as yours I would be really happy. How long did it take you to make it?

Difficult to say how many hours, but those pictures are from the third season.
There's always something that's not completely finished...
But it was not until the third summer I had that clear water, because
that spring I finished a big homemade filter.

Very nice pond, do you use something to keep it from freezing over in the winter?

Roy L.
10-27-2005, 5:19 PM
Thanks :)
I use an airpump/diffuser to keep a hole in the ice so the gasses kan get out, and so the fish don't sufficate.

And I put a crate with holes in the sides over the hole, to help keep it open.
It works fine, even when it gets down to -30 C.

It's important then that the air-stone is not placed deep, because then all the water will start to sircle and be chilled down.

You know water is heavyest when its +4 C, and stays at the bottom.

Must always snook around ;)
Is that a common fish in the Netherlands?

Loubard
10-27-2005, 6:07 PM
Yeah, you can buy it at every Garden center who sell pond stuff and fish. Like €10,- for 10 fish. You can also buy the normal dark form and a blue form too.

And is it common at Drammen, Norway?

Your pond is looking good btw, is it indoors?

There is a few lakes in the south part of Norway they've been put out, and we don't see them often in shops...
But ofcourse ponding is not a very common thing either, not like in Uk, Germany and the Netherlands..
Did You mean my little livingroom-pond on my space?
That was just a little prefabricated pond I set up very simply...
Missed seeing my fish during the wintertime :D

Yeah I did, do you have any pics of your pond outside then?

And in The Netherlands it is actually quite common to have a pond. I think I have read that almost 1/3 of the people has a pond. Not a big one for most, as not eatch garden is big enough to house a decent sized pond.

If you'r gonna make a natural pond, be very careful with the edges.
It's not easy to make it good, so the liner don't show.
I think it was a very good idea the way Loubard did the edges.
And a good tip is to make the pond deep, so the fish have plenty of space to swim. Then it's easyer for the fish in the wintertime too, if you have cold climate.

Take pictures when you start digging, and we can comment as you go.
Good luck :)

Hiya Roy and Fishyfishy, welcome to MFK. The Ides are illegal in Oregon, dammit. Nice pond. Roy, do you have problems over wintering?
FF where are you and do you want to keep locals or things like Koi?

Roy L.
12-12-2005, 5:02 PM
It works fine to over winter the fish in the pond, but it's very important to keep an open hole in the ice with an airpump.
Othervice they suffocate under the ice becauseof the sumpgasses and lack of oxygen.
And since water is heaviest at +4 celcius it's important to prevent the water from sirculating much.
