If you don't get it, you don't need to keep them. It's the primitiveness of the LFs I like.

LF are big and beautiful fish and have a very interesting physiology.

For example, the SAL has very nice shades of black and grey. The male develops structures on the pectoral fins that work like gills in reverse; they release oxygen into the water to supply its young with it. This oxygen he gets by breathing it in from the surface. Isn't that cool?

they are fish that have survived since the age of dinosaurs some 150+ million years
they have survived a continental breakup, several ice ages and mankind
their teeth have fused into 2 plates
it is speculated because at least one species has the correct gene it can see into the infra red range of light
they use weak electric fields to find prey
thier pectorals are loaded with chemorecptors to help locate food
and some can deliver a devastating bite that can remvoe bodily parts

grows huge, beautiful patterns, hearty appetite, nice ancient look to them, and those long legs are unique to them.. whats not to love? especially if your a monster fish lover :) ..

they are very personable too and can be hand fed (just be careful since they pack a mean bite ;)) ..

They are more closely related to you then they are to most other fish.

it's your personality; some people like arowanas, some people like sharks.
i like all kinds of fish but the cool part of lungfish is that they don't get affected by ph and hardness, theysimply ignore itHAHA
so you can do 100% water changes

yeah...Lung Fish looks very mean and like a 'cold blooded killer'...it's just laying down there and if a victim close enough than SNAP!!!...the victim is gone...

saw one of South American Lung Fish in my LFS...it's around 24" or so but looks very tough..

SAL is the most harmless creature I own and it looks it.
No "SNAP!!" at all.
Slow, sluggish searching, and, if finding, slow sniffing, slow chewing etc.

Once he scared me though.

I fell asllep on the sofa and he climbed out of the tank.
The 2' fish made a lot of noise. I woke up in horrow, thinking the 140g broke.

The lungfish is my favorite....I have a small one of about 8 to 9 inches in length and has been dreaming of getting those other varieties. They are personality fishes and they really eat a lot.....
