Irwini bro...biggest in their family..giant talking catfish...
I seen 1 mega pc at my fav LFS size is abit more than 2ft...
growth rate rather slow so i think you can consider it
dang, two feet??
anything a bit friendlier in terms of size? :) say around 1 feet??

Haha bro you are the expert in catfish ID..but for irwini i seen 1 alive that is abit more than 2ft...or else I would have believe you too :) wait till you see the niger in their tank it is even bigger than irwini...
I am just unsure if there is 2 type of irwini..the one big pc i saw got a more round face..not like the type of small ones i keep... i try to get picture of it from the LFS cos I know them and they seem friendly enough... best part is they even paste MFK sticker on the tank haha...
Currently I got 2 niger.. 1 pc growth rate rather normal..but the other one growth rate almost like RTC but abit slower that all..scary

Well the way i read this, i said Megaldoras gets a little over two feet, like you and i said.:)
And yeh Niger does grow a lot bigger, but i said this also by saying Oxydoras is the biggest in the family:)
Oh and know what you mean about Megaldoras having small mouths, but seems to me they have a small mouth when small, but with growth it seems to widen as the head becomes broader.:)

That pc of 2 ft+ M.irwini used to belong to brudder ezman. Was there since Jason's era. Tank size should be 4ft by 4ft.

If I missed the text where you said the size of tank these are in I am sorry. But what size of tank are all these cool cats in? I have been considering getting a 4inch (just label Doradid) black ripsaw - the lfs that has it said its grown maybe 1 inch in 8 months and its in a 150gal tank with other fish but nothing that would stop it from eating and such. Anyways great collection by all accounts. Just curious how many gallons these have you maintaining.

Yes..I been keeping it solo in the tank... till suddenly have to move all of them there...seem doing well with them... have just top up my water and put some leaf to soften it... tomorrow morning will throw some fish inside for testing.. if alright at night will put them back...I am getting a tig & flavican soon....
perfer to mantain them in 1 1/2 ft tank size till they are bigger...easier for them to catch feeder..also easier to maintain the water

Ya I know what you mean..meantime no new fish in... atleast till end of the month which mean they are safe...for niger & irwini they had ich on their eyes not on the hard body... so far it like a few days they are alright... everyday 15ml of solution and handful of salt...plus heater... I am glad they are fine cos some of the catfish is consider rare and not so easy to get...In my country who know....I am be the only one who keep Lithodoras dorsalis the most active of all... will try to get a video clip of them in youtube soon....

niger seem to grow very fast from 5" till that in almost a year now.. and under my hand it grow rate is consider slower as i did not power feed it.

My 1st picture in the 1st page posted on 31/08/07 :D
My irwini i bought at 3 ~ 4.5" only now biggest is 9~10" rather slow
How I happen to keep them is because I had my irwini then i got a few spotted so I think they are very interesting as they act as family not killer and I start going to my LFS to find all the different type to add...
At the moment, I might be the only few who got some of the catfish inside that consider rare to me :)
Thanks for viewing too

Whoaaa, that's not something one sees everyday. I have never ever seen any of these in my life. Very odd but cool looking cats.
Is it me, or they have more spines that usual?
How pricey are they? Rare?

the new few catfish like marble talking catfish seem like a yearly season. As for the 2 smaller ones they are to be unknown cant find any info in my book and planet catfish link. Now waiting for an expert to ID. As for spines, the younger they are the sharper for protection...eg niger catfish when i 1st bought the spines different from now..to me it is the same only the fish grow in length...

what is the growth like on your granulosus? Do you have any over the 12" mark? i've heard the growth slows down at that point.

Well, I got 2. One is about 8~9" with a very slow growth rate as I bought it at 7" for a about almost a year. The 2nd one which is smaller about 4"+ hope that the growth is faster as the 1st one growth rate might be abit stun.

Here is my spotted raphael. He very rarely comes out to cruise it. I've had him for about a year and a half...he was about 1.5" and survived through it all...w/ his 5'' striped raphael buddy who is still hiding.

I would have to say that the Lithodoras is rare here as well.I never see them on any vendors lists or in any stores tanks.I did see one once on a list here but it was nearing two feet and I would really like a small one to raise myself.A moderator just recently purchased a near twenty incher from another vendor who was selling it for a member who had passed. It seems that when they are available, its only the larger ones.I will get some pictures up one of these days.

Well mine seem to grow very slow. They are very cute & active. BTW how big is your niger now? Mine can say should be over 50cm.
