:WHOA: Thanks for the pics they lead me to fully understand that the closest big als to my house has a bunch of numb skulls :screwy: working there because i bough what they had listed as a redtail wolf and i now realize it is a rainbow wolf... i also bought a baby true wolf i have them both in separate tanks 33 gallons each, is that big enough?
benzjamin13
11-03-2005, 2:21 PM
I don't think that'll be good enough for when they grow bigger, but if it's temporary, and depending on their current size, it shouldn't be a big deal.

If by "true wolf" you mean Hoplias malabaricus (common wolf fish), then a 33g tank is not large enough to house one for life.
...and here are a few more wolf pics for this thread:

Is the rainbow wolf fish the same species as the regular and red-fin wolf fish? I couldn't find much info on it, and I can't tell whether it's just a color morph or a different specie altogether.

Hi Fomoris,
Thanks. :)
The first wolf fish which I post in page 1.
It's very rare, it's golden type. In Taiwan, we call him "Amber wolf fish".
The second wolf fish is black wolf fish "from Xingu basin". The color is very black than another area.
The third wolf fish is very popular in Taiwan. Just wolf fish, not expensive.

woodysun-Taiwan. I love the Black Wolf, I would like to get one of those.
I have started my wolf collection with a Golden Trahira, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus, Looks like a Rainbow Wolf, Better looking in my opinion. but gets a bit larger, in fact twice the size, 40cm, 16". Very shy fish at the moment, trying to get a pic to but on this thread.

damn jelly, that's a nice wolf. Shame it's still in hiding, I thought it woulod be similar to an ery ery, which don't seem shy at all, and are active.
Has it nailed any feeders yet?
I had alot of trouble getting him to eat so got desperate trying to encourage him with all sorts of stuff, I don't usually feed feeders but went and got a small group of danios. Ate all six over one night and now eats everything I put in there, Only in the dark of course. I still have not seen him eat yet.

Depending on the wolf youre getting. Wont house a hoplias M but a smaller rainbow or red tail would work.

I would like to get one of these and they are availible at LFS, but I hear that they don't even move unless they are eating, if this is true I may change my mind, They are still good looking monsters though !
I'd liike to keep some of those fish afterwards... Great baby wolf matty
kapster76
07-04-2006, 8:31 AM
ya they do not move that much. They will hide under things including gravel or sand most of the time. I still think it is a fun fish to own!

Wolffish are much like owning some Piranhas(Rhoms,Brandti's etc)they are not very active but they do have personality's all of thier own.And keep in mind they are ferocious predators, probably 1 of the best!!!:headbang2

what would be the best tank setup for one,or dose it matter?? and could i get away with a 5"baby one all by itself in a 30g with very strong filtration, since they arent really that active???
kapster76
08-22-2006, 1:18 PM
i would go bigger for a wolf. They grow quick and need room and even tho they are not active.

Here's a pic of the KING of all wolffish! He's currently a Shark Aquarium, for @ $3000 he could be all yours. Over 3 feet long, and giant girth! I have been a tropical fish hobbist for a LONG time and this is truly the baddest TROPICAL fish I ever saw! Picture does NOT do this fish justice, since it's in a 10 foot long tank!

You are correct. It is Ery Sp. Peru. Really good looking fish now, Closely related to the Hifin but not as active. Only 8" max but would still eat the kitchin sink:)

It is a Hoplias Aimara A/K/A Black Wolffish! I'm sure it's old, hate to buy it and have it die!
KRSwop1
09-02-2006, 12:27 AM
I hope this doesn't come off "know-it-all'ish," but aimara are not black wolfish. The black wolves are an undescribed species that come from the xingu river. And to me, they seem to be more similar to lacerdae. Aimara is the king of all wolves. They get the largest and typically are more aggressive then the other wolf species, but there are always acceptions to the rule.

Anyones input is always welcome to me, KRSwop1, I can only go by what I read or find on the internet, as to how others label their fish! Well atleast I got the Aimara part right, so when I guy told me his Aimara was a black wolffish , I took it for gospel.

lol. Good to know. I didn't want to come across as a little *******. Just wanted to spread the correct info. It's like going to an aquarium and looking at a caribe display and hearing people call them red bellies, lol. Dookie or Chucky had their black wolf up for sale rescently if you wanted to check out some pictures to make a comparison. The wolf george has is a Venezuelan Aimara. Very nice fish.
