If you have space for a nylon mesh bag to place cabon in your filter, then go for it, only w/ a msh bag though. Some people use it (carbon) all the time, some of us just use it when or if the water is stained fron wood tannins or to remove medication after a med. dosing. Some carbon can remove trace elements from your water, so depending on your set up you may or may not want to use it all the time.

There is a product made by Seachem called Purigen, it take the place of carbon, can be recharged/reused once exhausted, that wrks really well, worth chking into. :) :) :)

+ 1 on the purigen.....with the Carbon you can leave it for two reasons. It was once thought Carbon leached back everything it absorbed but just the opposite is true.It also is quite pourous and makes for good bio on a budget.

the LFS GUY, told me to have a carbon on my Mech. filtration, so that the water smell will go away.. is this true? but im thinking also of the good bacteria/elements that would be helpful for the fish would also be washed away due to carbon..
im putting this on both of my Flowerhorn tanks.. what do u tnk?

carbon works but needs to be replaced like every 3-4 weeks if u want it to keep working. and i mean working at removing harmful chemicals from the water..not a cheap bio

what about what they say with purigen? is this more cheaper than carbon?

What do "they" say about Purigen?

Up front no, Purigen is more expensive per volume than most carbon, however it (purigen) may be recharged, possibly (depending on chem's used in tank w/ it, read Purigen info regarding this), there for extending the life & making it much cheaper than carbon, especially $$ high grade carbon. :) :) :)

I use carbon for emergencies only. Carbon will remove ammonia, but your biofilter should do that. It will take out smells and stains from water though.
