an oscar will eventually need a 75 gallon tank because they reach well over 12 inches and will need more room to turn around
an oscar will be ok in a 50 gallon tank for a while but when they reach 10 or 11 inches they will need a larger tank

actully this will depend on what 50 gallon tank you have...a standard 50 is basicly a 55 short...(48" long) However a 50 gallon tank in a breeder configuration....only 3' long but a lot wider....would be fine for an Oscar for a very long time. You have to concider shape as well as gallons when figuring a minimum and, of course, always go as big as possible.
50 gallons may well be the upper limit NOW but that may change long before the Oscar needs more room.

A standard 100gallon at 5' would be even better however given the choice between a narrow footprint 50 and a 50 breeder, I'd take the breeder every time....
Why?
Because even though they DO swim around...Oscars are NOT as active a swimmer as....say an arow is...so the length is less importiant .
We have our pair of Oscars in a standard 100 and they basicly hang out on one end of the tank all day. I could honestly divide the tank in half and they wouldn't notice it.

In my opinion that would be the bare minimum with no decorations. If you are dilligent with water changes it should be okay.
Depending on width I'd say your fine, posting demensions with questions like this would make it so much easier to decide.
