I dont know why but ever since i bought my first Clown Loach pair, i cant stop buying them, i now have moved them out of the Oscar tank, and put them into a 55g tank a customer gave me because there Gecko got a new tank, 150g to be exact! I love working at a Pet Store. I now have 8 Loaches in the tank, all about 2-3 inches long. They school together and sometimes swim in a single file line :headbang2 that is just awesome. Any body else really like CLs?

What do you feed your loaches? How fast do they grow?

in my tank they basically clean up the bottom with whatever im feedin my other fish......krill, brine shrimp, sometimes even earthworms......im not real sure how fast they grow but the owner of a lfs (i assume this is local fish store?) has some that are about 12" i think and he said he has had them for 6-7 years....he wanted 100 bucks for them(i dont think they were really for sale)

Clown Loaches grow very slow, but they are pretty hardy fish, besides the fact the get ick more than other fish. Other than that they do a good job cleaning up if you have a school they do even better, can be a very shy fish if kept alone or just a pair, i recommend atleast 3-5 to start out, they stay more active that way.

i recal reading about how clown loaches can become immune to ich after they get it and recover from it. this goes for other fish is well.

they say that a vaccine can be made for ich. . .

Around a foot, but they grow slowly and it takes a considerable time for them to get that big, they are a long lived fish.

twk1- Yea man that makes you a CL Addict.

I have 4 clowns and love them. They all have different personalities and are quite aware of their surroundings. Two of them are in my 125 and are close to 5", the other two are in my 55 and are 3". They just are a unique fish in my opinion.

I have 7 with my rays they are excellent at cleaning up after the messy rays, and are entertaining. They amaze me how they can all manage to hide in the smallest places and how they sleep on thier sides.

If theyre large enough, the rays wont touch them. Clown loaches have spines
that stick out of their eyes !

Interesting. I would think that to be erroneous. I have found that after the initial breakout and treatment (with marine salt) that they aren't necessarily immune, but rather that they parasite dies. I dunno....

I have 10 about 4". They do a great job of cleaning up and make an attractive active component of my tank decor.

As far as feeding clown loaches, try some blanched peas or blanched zuchini. They love the stuff.

The biggest I've seen is 14"
The biggest friends of mine have seen is 17"
The biggest a member of the ACA saw was 20"

I've got a friend who has raised several up to 12"-13" range.

My largest is only a real chunky 7"

Does anyone have pictures of their largest loaches?

My largest is only about seven or eight inches but I have a school of over fifty of them that are great to watch and clean up the tank with! You can get great deals on schools of them on aquabid.

have a look at www.loaches.com and you'll find some large ones.

I have 8 loaches from 2" 3,5" and they rock :)

I bought a tank with one poor fella.. he had been kept alone for 2 years in a 54 litre tank.. really unhappy.. i moved him to a 240 L tank and bought him 7 mates...

The more hiding places i add the more active and safe they become... my fav fish

Got 4 cls around 3-5". They were being bothered by my temensis. So i have to move them out of my main tank. Now, i'm deciding if im gonna sell them or not. After reading this thread, i guess NOT!!! Now I want more. I moved in a 50g tank, together w/ my goldies. I'll probably get more.

Yup it's a desease. I lost a colony of clown loaches due to ich which I got from newly bought clown loaches from the LFS. I stupidly didn't quarantine them first. Always quarantine your newly aquired fish.

here's more info on ich http://cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php

Hiya ringham, welcome to MFK.
Ich is one of the most common of aquarium parasitical diseases. It looks like the fish are sprinkled with grains of salt. Everybody seems to encounter it sooner or later but caught early it is easy to cure. You can also do a search in the disease and health forum here.

Clowns are schoolers and tend to be happier and more active when kept in groups of 3+. I have 9 in a 135 along with about six other types, yoyo, modesta kubotia. They have gone from about 1/2" to 2 1/2", largest, in a little over a year.

Ever since I bought four clown loaches last july, I haven't been able to stop buying more of them. Finding LFS carrying clown loaches larger than 3" is rare. I was lucky to find a local hobbyist selling four of his that he kept for 3 years. Three of them were 5.5" and one was 4.5".

Here's a few camera phone shots of my collection. I taped a quarter onto the tank to show some perspective of their sizes.

So I bought 4 x 2.5" clown loaches today. I put the in with my spotted gars inside a 40. I never thought to look for ich... then I read this read and saw someone say it looked like salt sprinkled over the fish... so I'm pretty sure my CL have ich. I took the loaches out and put them in a 10 and cranked the temp up. I'll prob go buy some salt tomorrow. I took the gars out and put them in the 150. They were probably together for 5 hours or so... do I need to treat the gars for ich too or am I safe?

ewurm

Gar are not nearly as susceptible to ich. If you don't see any warning signs I think you are OK.
